Why is there so many uncool things happening at the moment?

1. Casino Cafe - What an horrible idea. It makes my stomach twist.

2. The Drifters - We are now having a major weekender booking cabaret acts. If I am right, there isn't one original member alive?

3. Signed photos of John Vincent & Russ Winstanley - Here is offending item in full...'Tickets for ths one are £10 or the VIP ticket which includes Champagne, pizzas, pastas and salad bar in the VIP lounge, then we are having autographed photos with Dean , Russ and John, these tickets are £30'

4. The Ian Levine CD - Everything about this is so wrong. The songs, the production, the markerting and above all it is being pushed by someone who isn't part of the current scene.

I always thought this scene was underground, cool, mysterious, exciting and better than anything else. I think the above examples prove otherwise.

the sherlock holmes cafe on baker street has a drama student dressed up as a copper from the old days on the door.

perhaps we could have a gaunt looking 17 year old in a vest covered in sweat and eyes like dinner plates stood on the door of this cafe?

why do we have to turn our scene into a tourist attraction? there are still 1000s people attending events at weekends. its not a thing of the past to a lot of us.

Shane, I know where you're coming from, but to be honest don't see that it will become a major problem. People go to the natural history museum, have a look round, are generally amazed, then go back to what they do normally. No fuss, no big deal and can't really see why it's considered tacky. If I happened to be in the Wigan area I'd probably have a look at it, but wouldn't consider going as a matter of urgency, as I suspect most people on the scene wouldn't.

As for signed photos, doesn't overly interest me, but I do recognise some people like to review their personal history in such a way, so again doesn't bother me. Personally don't think it'll affect the scene in any way shape of form, apart from a few people wondering what they missed in the 7Ts and then going home and putting the dinner on

Re - the picture signing of Dean Parrish , no different to the hundreds who queue up at Prestatyn or Cleethorps for autographs of the acts is it ? Are they to be ridiculed too then ?

As i said, not my cup of tea to hero worship to that point, but if someone wants to, then good luck to them & i would feel glad that they enjoyed it.

Re- The Drifters, why is having them play at a weekender a joke ? Music wise i mean, not the line up, as i'm of the opinion of most that what is the point when none of them are the original ! Same with 'the Tops' & 'the Temps' etc

But musicaly it depends on what they are singing ! If it's 'Sitting in the Back Row' , 'Like Sister & Brother' etc, yes it's caberet. But if it's the early stuff then i would have thought they had as much right as any others ?

Most of the people who buy into this sort of thing will never be seen at the soul nights most of us attend and we won't have to rub shoulders with them, god forbid but if it makes them happy and brings back a few memories of their one off trip to wigan back in the 70s or nights at their local youth club then what's it got to do with any of us, just leave them be to get on with it.

The "scene" does not belong to "us" and each of us are only a small part of something far bigger than any DJ/Venue etc. We do not have a god given right to dictate what people do where they go and what music they listen to, we all have our own preferred venues, genre's etc and have no right to berate other peoples memories of what they misguidedly think the NS scene was or is now.

I personally don't like "disco" (modern) and have a joke with people I know that like it but I don't moan all the way through a DJs set if it is being played at venue I am at, and on more than one ocassion been spotted even dancing to it .

I am not a great fan of played out oldies, but I have friends who are and occassionally go out with them but what I don't do is spend all night moaning about there taste in music etc.

I wish some of you would stop playing the "Soul Police" moral high ground and just leave people to do their own thing and you all get on with yours

I don't think "Soul Nostalgia" has yet been classified as a contageuos disease so you can be sure if you accidently bump into one of these people it won't infect you or kill off today's scene, its far too big and ugly at times, for that to happen

Think you'll find that there's a bit more to the autographs than you realise Pete. Artists usually produce vintage promos of themselves and are happy to sign these once the fans have purchased them. For example: I have had posters made of the Harthon Trio. The guys will be more than happy to sign them and they will cost $10. This way they are not out of pocket for coming down to the event.

Same happens at Prestatyn, There are posters of the event and the artists are happy to sign in their respected places. I don't think the artists charge for their actual autograph. I had all the artists sign sleeves etc at Prestatyn this year and never paid a penny for any of them. I'm pretty sure no one else did either although I'm sure Rob or one of the guys will corroborate that.

I have original sleeves signed by many artists and can't remember ever having to pay for them, but if said artist has a CD or a picture for sale I simply buy that out of respect. I'm not alone either. Almost all my mates do the same.

I suspect that DP will have promo shots and material out and will be signing them. Good luk to 'em I say. It 's all part of an artists income. Nothing wrong with it in my opoinion. I do agree that if a fan wanted an autograph and was told "sure-that'll be ten bucks" it would be a disgrace, but I've never heard of that happening.

Re the cafe...I don't think it's trying to exploit the scene...it's just a cafe in Wigan that has a theme! Nobody gives a rat's ass really...My mum lives in Wigan and I'm sure I'd pop in if parched!!

Shane I will have to have a word on Sunday as, if you had ever visited Wigan town centre you would realise that nobody gives a poo about the Casino any more unless they REALLY went Everybody you talk to in the Wigan area went to the Casino(including my brother who was a punk later on) an the cafe will just be another cafe! Lets just hope the pies are up to scratch

thanks for all the replies on this. i was hoping someone would have disagreed with me in the true sense rather than say i am idiot for being bothered by it all.

having read all the posts, i have yet seen one post by anyone who will be travelling to the casino cafe, one post from someone who can't wait to see the drifters, not one single mention of anyone who will happily pay 30 quid for a slice of pizza and a picture of russ winstanley and finally no one has said "shane you are wrong, i love that ian levine cd.

I have always wondered about these acts that get dragged out for weekenders and the like. How do we know its the real people at all (Those that are still alive that is) and not just some tribute act? I wouldn't know what Dean Parrish, the Drifters, the 4 tops and all the others that have been on round and about look like now...Could just be some big con as far as I`m concerned, but then I`ve never liked live `northern` acts (or dead ones come to think about it!)

The Casino Cafe isn't the best idea in my book. I work in Wigan and the blokes in the office came up to me to inform me that there was a Casino Cafe in the shopping centre. Then they paused and looked at me waiting for a reply as though I was going to get up and leg it down there for a butty.

I too find it a bit uncool that something I love is associated with a cafe.

And one more rant about the newies v oldies scene.

When I first came on this scene 5 years ago I just couldn't believe how cool it was. My first early nighters were at Sheridans and Goldbourne. Dark dingy places playing this amazing music. It just didn't get any better and that was MY scene. I later discovered that there was an adjacent scene that was at slightly better venue's and I knew most of the songs and the blokes wore these funny baggy pants. Now I prefered the other dark and dingy places where I didn't know the tunes but I would go and attend these other nights and enjoy them for what they were. After a while I got really sick of these mainstram nights and I realised they weren't as cool as the rare nighters so I stopped going to them.

But I would never slag these nights because the people who went to them were enjoying themselves.

My point is why do people on this sight think that they have the right to tell others what they're doing is sad or un cool. If you dont like it then don't go to them and stick to nights you like. If people want to 'celebrate' Wigan Casino at the bank holiday sunday night then let them. They are going cos thats what they like. Is there anything wrong with that. These people are never going to cross over onto the rare soul scene so just get used to that fact.

-THE UPFRONT NIGHTER SCENE WHICH HAS BASICALLY HAD MANY OF ITS ATTENTENTEES VISTING DOS SINCE THE EARLY EIGHTIES AND GIVING THE REAL COMMITTMENT TO THE SCENE.TO ME THIS CROWD VIEW THE SCENE MORE AS A LIFESTYLE CHOICE AND SHOW PASSION AND COMMITTMENT TO COLLECTING AND MOVING THE SCENE ON.

-THE RETRO CROWD AND COMEBACKS WHO PREFER THE OLDIES AND VERY POSSIBLY THE RENEWING OF OLD FRIENDSHIPS ETC.NOT MANY OF THIS CROWD CROSSOVER TO THE FIRST SCENE IF SO THEN ALL THE BETTER.THESE PEOPLE WERE FUNNY TROUSERS AND ARE LAUGHED AT BY NORMAL PEOPLE AND BUS DRIVERS,THEY SPIN TO DO I LOVE YOU AND EAT RETRO WIGAN PIES,THEY MISTAKE PRO PLUS FOR BACK STREET BLUIES AND TEND TO DRINK VAST AMOUNTS OF LAGER.

-SCENE 3 IS THE VAST AMOUNT OF AVERAGE SOUL NIGHTS UP AND DOWN THE COUNTRY THAT LAST TILL 12 AT NIGHT AND PLAY RUBY ANDREWS JUST LOVING YOU 11 TIMES.THIS SCENE COMPLEMENTS THE RETRO SCENE.

AS FOR WIGAN CAFINO,I HAVE NOT BEEN BACK TO WIGAN SINCE 1981 ,HAVE NO ITENTION TO DO SO ,IT WAS NOT A SHRINE FOR ME IT HELPED ME SCREW UP SCHOOL,LOSE WEIGHT AND GET INTO A BUCKET LOAD OF TROUBLE.HOWEVER I HAVE GOOD MEMORIES ALSO MAINLY AROUND THE QUALITY THAT ACTED AS A PRECURSER FOR THE RECORDS I PURSUED AFTER THAT.

I listen to Terry Christian on BBC Radio Mcr on the way home from work. He's been banging on about this Soul Nation thats been on and Trevor Nelson's performance when he came up to Wigan. TC was going mad about how he didn't look a bit interested and how soul music was mis-represented and a real injustice was carried out on the BBC's part.

Anyway, so this week he's plugging the bank holiday night in wigan and talking briefly about NS for 5 -10 mins each day followed by a song. He couldn't make his mind up what to play today. It was between Landslide, Rescue me (????!!!) or ghost in my house.

When I heard this I pulled the car over and text him saying that he should really research it better and play something thats current for todays scene such as Johnny Howard or Sam Dee's, as the tunes he's picked are either not played anywhere or overplayed.

Next news he's laughing and calling me an expert after reading my text out. I text back saying that northern soul never gets on the mainstram and when it does its the same five songs that get played. I also pointed out that I felt he had done an injustice to NS just like Soul Nation did. Of course he didn't read that one out.

Why can't someone see past the usual offenders and put something on that will excite an audience. Or am I just banging my head against a brick wall?????

I never saw the play but would have gone, given the chance. You don't have to be a luvvie to enjoy good theatre.

The signed photo of DP, with the added 'confetti' of our mustachioed heroes, plus VIP suite, pizza & champers, I think, is a bit on the tawdry side. but as with all things, whatever gets you through the night.

NS 2007? I don't really care for this sort of material & the only new releases I buy are Bob Dylan's.

We were conned back in the 60's & 70's with regards a lot of bands/artists, didn't the Topics come over here as the Temptations? And The Drifters well that's another story with the number of bands going round back in the 60's and 70's, you could never be quite sure if it was the Orginal Difters even back then.

Why is a play bad...is the Brechtian concept of agitprop you disagree with or do YOU wish I had made it more Stanislavkian in its method? I mean , what is your great critical claim based on. Perhaps, you would like to compare it to some of the may other productions you have seen?

Now we are talking my language.. Brechtian agitprop when the singer steps out of his naturalised role to communicate a message directly to the audience - Gil Scott-Heron's 'The Bottle.' Or the Stanislavskian-system, where the singer creates a believable emotional character inside a naturalised world by drawing on a fund of emotions from previous experience eg. Sam Dees 'Fragile Handle With Care.' Love them both. Not so sure about James Coit's 'Black Power - leans towards Brecht but it's crap.

Any other obscure theatre references please call.

Agree with Shane - Casino Cafe is not for me - nostalgic melodrama - but if I was in Wigan I'd go out of hypocritical curioisty.

of course it was relevant. the play was a good example of portraying wigan rather than a coffee bar
