Guest Scarborosoul
THANK FCUK that i didnt go to this having just watched the vid on u tube I keep my memories of the Casino in a safe and happy place in pristine condition. Those of us who went to the Casino regularly dont need styte like that to remind us. I went to both the 30th aniv at Stoke and the 31st at CIS both were well run, well attend and did the Casino proud from what ive seen this proberbly did more damage to the Casino and the scene than the imfamous Jazzy B comments. IMHO it is time Winstanley crawled back under whatever rock he keeps emerging from. Its over russ you had yr 8 yrs of fame and the original DJs from the Casino have all way suppassed you. Now is the time for you to go back to oblivion because your giving the dancing dinosours like me a bad name. RICK Link to comment
Guest
Just showed the a clip of it to my son (11) and his mates. Once they stopped pissing themselves laughing. They came out with a few quotes. Kevinkent
Dean Parrish is one helluva performer. I missed out when I DJ'd at Peterborough 'cos he didn't show (also missed out on the offer of petrol money, the Pizza, or even a drink - but hey I enjoyed myself and it was for charity). I was offered free VIP tkts for Wigan though by Russ Winstanley -then he legged it without producing them . Maybe it was the "I'm Kevin Kent by the way - and you are.....?" that did it. Anyway, fair play to those that enjoyed it, but I'm sort of glad I didn't go really. Think I'll pass on u tube too. Edited August 31, 2007 by KevinKent Link to comment

Guest gordon russell
DEAN PARRISH is a pop singer nothing more nothing less Ahem! Heres to Mitch Ryder, Timi Yuro, Frankie Valli, Len Barry, Johnny Caswell, Tommy Good, Tommy Navarro, Freddie Chavez, Sue Lynn, and all the other white pop artistes that have given us around 20% of our music over the years. I for one, am so glad they turned up on those days and tried their best! Shame they aren't poor and black, cos then they would probably fit your criteria of a good northern record. they're all bloody pop singers you may or may not like their tunes but not soul music cept timmy yuro mabye Link to comment

Dean Parrish had a great voice (he may still have but I haven't seen him since Cleethorpes). I certainly don't view him as a pop singer - Determination, IOMW, Tell Her, Steeplechase - they're bloody good records at the end of the day. At the time of their release don't think anyone viewed them as 'pop'. Conversley Hoagy Lands "The next in\line" is a charming pop record by a soul singer....confusing.... Link to comment

My wider point is the retro northern crowd absolutely love this stuff, but would'nt give a stuff for the likes of MELLO SOULS,LENNY WILLIAMS,HANK HODGE PARLIAMENTS ETC ETC. see you at BEDFORD ATH I HOPE Link to comment

Have only visited station road once since the Casino shut and that was in the company of a gorgeuos blonde who talked me into leaving the nighter at maxines in wigan to go and have a look at the old Casino site for old times sake even though i had vowed never to go back after the last nighter ( Just cant say no to women ) But fair play to everyone that went. Bazm
how can you have a real Wigan revival without Richard Searling ? Agree with that.......but anyway, not so much as a 'Wigan revival' but it'll be good to see and hear RS behind the decks in a Northern room again this Friday at Prestwich. He did mention on his show that he'll be playing some of his favs from Wigan and Va Va's as well as some of the things he'd be featuring now if he was DJing regularily on the Northern circuit...should be good BTW Russ's Casino revival review has made the front page of the Wigan Reporter this weekend, nowt online yet for you to read, but Russ has (alegedly) made some coments in the piece (apart from the usual hype) and if I was Wigan Council i'd be a bit pissed with him cause he apparently pulled off this night 'without any help from them'! Why he should want or need the Councils help is beyond me anyway but in defence of Wigan Council, two of the longest running Northern Soul nights in the area, Lowton and the Monacco are both held in Wigan MBC venues, and speaking for Lowton I can say the Council have been supportive of that particular event for years, so not sure where he's coming from with that one. After speaking to a few of my friends who went to this gig, their coments echoed the reviews posted on this thread (to the point of actually telling Russ that he'd blighted the memory of the Casino). The only good thing I hope can possibly come out of all this is that some of the people who went, who may not be regulars on the scene. may get the Soul bug again and actually come out more often and support some of the venues in the North West (and beyond) that have been there playing the music we love for the last decade or so...... Here's hoping BazM Link to comment

Pete S
so if they're not soul singers what's a NORTHERN soul singer .... There's no such thing as a Northern Soul singer, just an artist who made a record that was taken on board by the Northern Soul scene. What about I Can't Help Loving You by Paul Anka is a bad record, it can't be slagged off because that record epitomises what Northern Soul is, except it's by a short white bloke, I thought we'd got over this "it can only be soul if it's by a black person" stuff Link to comment
