Here's the question, in my hand I have a single by Second City Sound, on the "B" side is "The Dream of Olwyn" and on the A side is A Touch Of Velvet & Sting Of Brass, but what was played on the Northernsoul scene? Mood Mosaic or Second City Sound??

I know one version was played at the Wheel in 1967 and it was also a Wigan Casino sound. I must admit that it is one of my all time favorites and I never get tired of hearing its haunting melancholy tune, I love it.

BEEFEATERS - Johnny Dankworth and his Orchestra Fontana H512 (1964) / Fontana TF 267395 (re-issue). The version used by Blackburn was slowed down to include a dubbed Arnold the dog. The track was also the theme tune of Redifussion TV's Search for a Star

Dave Lee Travis "DLT," as he was known, joined Caroline South in September 1965 where he took over the Lunchtime Show and became "your dinner spinner." His show started with the sound of Big Ben chiming followed by A Touch Of Velvet, A Sting Of Brass by Mood Mosaic.

I was dead impressed, mainly 'cos he turned up on his Harley Davidson with a blonde behind him, rode right through the venue, up a ramp to the stage, parked up, grabbed the mike and said "Brighton, Are You Ready To Rock!"

Great gig and not a bloody laptop in sight LOL......

mood mosaic played at wheel, bit of an anthem if i remember. by the way that gets harder these days, only bloody thing that does

Day off Monday so I'm stopping up to play my Johhny Dankworth and Charlie Parker tapes, when the music changes, so does the dance.

Tony Blackburn's breakfast show theme music was 'Beefeaters' by Johnny Dankworth, I also remember 'The Penguin Breakdown' being used as someones theme music in the early 70t's but which DJ was it who used it, I'm almost certain it was a breakfast show.

I have the Second City Sound on Major Minor

which was from a Bargain Bin outside a Shop in Doncaster.

They were Nearly all the Major Minor Label in the Bargain Bin.

& at the time in the 70's

I only Managed a Columbia Re-Issue of Mood Mosaic.

I'll have to dig my copies out for another listen.

There's a third version of A Touch Of Velvet by Sounds Orchestral on Pye or Piccadilly.

I'm with you all in remembering it from the radio (I thought it was Radio Luxemburg!) but it was never a Wigan 'top' sound in the true sense of the word, it was played by Dave Evison in his oldies spot and got reactivated because of that and even bootlegged.

See the avatar's not changed but like you said to me at Middleton it makes people stop you to ask if it's you, so you meet new people all the time, also it frightens old ladies & keeps kids away from open fires .

Sorry gone off at a tangent as usual, get your mate to play you the flip of "Penguin Breakdown" that just as good & the main reason I rang, t'was the "Mood Mosiac's" that I remember being played & seem to remember it played at Cleethorpes a lot, no doubt it will have originated from another venue but thats what I remember from early/mid 70's, which is quite good cos I can't remember much more from that decade .Remember "Sounds Orchestra" version on Pye Int being issued but both other versions we're just copies IMVHO.

Just to add my 2 pen'th(or what ever!). It was definately DLT for Mood Mosaic. Also Stuart henry used the start of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"(A side of "Quitter") Williams & Watson as a type of Jingle.

I am really surprised that no one actually ever mixed all 3 versions subtly together at the height of Imber.

I always like mixing Jackie Edwards with Wynder K Frog or is it the other way round. Obviously less subtle inst into vocal. What a Mod Mosiac mix work on the 45?

What other subtle DJ mixes are out there?

This was diffeno the one that was played at the Wheel in Whitworth St, was very big at the time, top tune, when I hear it it reminds me of 1967/1968.

The Mood Mosaic version was played regular at the Riddings Soul Scene in Scunthorpe around 67/8 when Wheel goer Fred Benson was the main DJ. Going from memory i think this followed the three closing records which were It's So Hard Being A Loser, I want to go back there again and I'm Gonna Miss You.

I actually played this at a fund raising night this last saturday and introduced this as DLT's theme tune which it was many years ago.
