March 2, 200817 yr PEOPLE THAT'S WHY Check out P.J. Proby's version on the ENIGMA Liberty LP. Must be the original version, interesting and ain't bad in it's own right. Edited March 2, 200817 yr by john manship
March 2, 200817 yr used to have a very rare west coast blue labelled demo of this. Great sound, heard the PJ version but not anywhere near Idle Few imho. Ian.
March 2, 200817 yr spun this at home first time for ages tonight ! boy it still sounds good always remember this on the THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL LP ne one else like it??? Absolutely right Mark, a top sound. I've heard it out a few times lately so perhaps it is being revived in various venues.
March 2, 200817 yr Great great record. I have a soft spot for the PJ Proby version but it aint quite as good. Was PJ Proby ever played out, Cleethorpes? Can someone confirm whether it was booted as a white demo? I've always assumed mine was a pressing but have seen a white demo identical to mine sold as a proper one. Regards Alan
March 2, 200817 yr spun this at home first time for ages tonight ! boy it still sounds good always remember this on the THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL LP ne one else like it??? Mark i'm pretty sure it was played two or three Middletons back, alongside Gil Blanding. Might have been that Kev Roberts spot.
March 2, 200817 yr Hear it yesterday afternoon at Prestatyn, can't remeber who played it though....Cheers John
March 2, 200817 yr Dunno why you have to ask Mark? If you think it's good enough then play it, f*ck what anyone else thinks

March 2, 200817 yr this has been booted hasnt it ? cos i got one but am sure its a boot, great tune BTW mark Its been booted on a White Demo as well as the Light blue. The boot of the white demo often gets sold as an original!

March 2, 200817 yr Author yes im fine thanks bud and hope u are too, gonna try and get over to your do soon mate, ive heard its superb ==== yes mate..really taking off in a BIG way...u wont be disappointed!
March 2, 200817 yr yes ,it should be played a wee bit more.Play it alongside Turn of the Century-"Money Can't on Bumpshop, its the law!! .
March 2, 200817 yr Top tune, definitely worthy of more spins. Feel it's better than PJ Proby's version.
March 2, 200817 yr Its been booted on a White Demo as well as the Light blue. The boot of the white demo often gets sold as an original! what is the difference again mate.
March 3, 200817 yr Played out in main room Saturday night at Prestatyn, think it was Ginger Taylor, still sounded fresh on the floor, excellent!!!
March 3, 200817 yr Billy Vera Billy never recorded it, even as a demo. He wrote the song for a girl to sing, and was quite surprised that only Proby and the Idle Few cut it Billy never knew of the Idle Few's version until comparaitively recently, which is an indication of how marginally their sales must have affected his royalty statements.

March 3, 200817 yr what is the difference again mate. The boot white demo is vinyl with a ridge in the label, the original white demo is styrene.
March 3, 200817 yr Any chance of the chorus? In a bit,a little bit tho`next it`ll be all cut and shut together and out on G******e
March 4, 200817 yr spun this at home first time for ages tonight ! boy it still sounds good always remember this on the THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL LP ne one else like it??? prefer the other version, Idle Few just sounds tired and old, which of course it is... some tracks don't stand the test of time because they were crap in the first place...? Just my opinion of course. Mal.C. Edited March 4, 200817 yr by Mal.C.

Just my opinion of course. Mal.C. Thought this is a site for Northern Soul FANS, its been a very NEGATIVE week, IDLE FEWS no good, ROYAL ESQUIRES , MAGNETICS and LAURA GREEN have all been shot down and thats just what I have read this week!!!
March 4, 200817 yr Author Thought this is a site for Northern Soul FANS, its been a very NEGATIVE week, IDLE FEWS no good, ROYAL ESQUIRES , MAGNETICS and LAURA GREEN have all been shot down and thats just what I have read this week!!! --- but would be boring if we all liked the same thing mate.. look at that tune i put up last week - not 1 person liked it but i think its one of the best 45s ive bought in years! oh well... lol
March 4, 200817 yr PEOPLE THAT'S WHY Check out P.J. Proby's version on the ENIGMA Liberty LP. Must be the original version, interesting and ain't bad in it's own right. John, please, I thought you had better taste than that, P.J.Proby's version is on apart with his Taylors ability to reinforce crotch seams in trousers, in other words "Shi*e", same as his ability to refrain from the demon drink & fulfill his obligations, here endeth the 1st lesson, amen. Anyway we've been getting Ginger to play it (and anyone else that will listen) for past 18 months, cos it's brill but seems everyone wants it on an issue (rarer), one just gone on e-bay for $206. Forgot "YES,YES,YES" it should be played out again & sorry for the small "Rev Ian Paisley" type rant, I don't know what came over me?? Take care, be safe & remember "There's a place for us,somewhere a place for us", Spot.

March 4, 200817 yr Played this in a few of my Northern spots lately...sounds the bizz and gets a great reaction.... I didnt tell you this but i had it on CD in the car..and Helen thought the lyrics were "people are twats"......now go and listen to it and tell me you cant hear him singing that too! If you ever quote me on that i will deny it! Chris.
March 5, 200817 yr So me Billy Vera promo cd isnt him Sorry, Ken, my faux pas - I seem to recall Billy telling me that Lesley Miller did his original demo, because he'd written the song for a girl (she did tons of demos for all sorts of songwriters in New York in the mid 60s). Obviously this old age thing has its side effects. My apologies. The CD (which I don't have a copy of) is incontrovertable evidence that Billy did record it. Mind you, Lesley Miller still might have done the original demo, of course. I'll ask Billy later on...
March 5, 200817 yr In a bit,a little bit tho`next it`ll be all cut and shut together and out on G******e Thanks Ken. I prefer this to PJ Proby's version.

No it's a site for Northern Soul FANS to give their opinions on things and if he doesn't like it then he's allowed to say whatever he likes. Otherwise whats the point of having the site? I'm surprised someone didn't come in with "Idle Few is a soul classic, shame on you for not liking it" like they did to me with The Carstairs the other day

I'm surprised someone didn't come in with "Idle Few is a soul classic, shame on you for not liking it" like they did to me with The Carstairs the other day The site is split into sections and I was hoping "Look In Your Box" could be more serious than the usual level of playground drivel. For Collectors to swop info on records and collecting. For people to learn about new sounds and find things out. There could be another section on Soul Source for all the people who don't like the records. The "Slagging Down Northern Classics" section for anyone who would be daft enough to read it! There are records I'm not keen on, but I know other people like them and I respect that, so would not spoil it for them.

Before you get too high on your horse try reading more posts from the person you are moaning about & you will discover that there arn't many on here who contribute more in that area & have as much knowledge than he, surely we can be excused just one running joke !!
