Mention of this by Kolla dragged up memories that mucker reckoned that this is one of the most covered northern connected soul sides.

He said that once he managed to list 50+ of them, "go on name again" I said , but time was against us

So in a spirit of Sat afternoon boredom, will list a few I can remember, and feel free to add versions

Or add ought info, orig first version? any trivia etc etc

Or if think theres another "contender" for most covered version...... get it up!!

Kollas orignal

Tempests/Jimmy James/Radiants "Ain't No Big Thing"

Then Nick got in, pinching some ones was going to post, so just one other for now

Burn you a new one - no not a dodgy mp3 cd site, but the Embers Lp -one with "aware of love" on that also has a version of Ain't No Big Thing

is the Van MCoy one ?

Using my vast photgraphic like memory (otherwise known as google), says he wrote one same title, different song

info got at hand says

g sims being the writer credited to chevis music company

gerald sims??

gotta rush, more later.....

  • Author

this should be a laugh, tying to get to 50

as seems theres a fair few other similar titled songs

such as aint no big thing (but its growing) was recorded by likes of elvis and 32 others inc finbar saunders going by the title

anyway few more of the Gerald Sims one

electrons almost sure?

sly slick and wicked

Ringos - Ain't No Big Thing ?

tommy sands?

catalinas 79 lp

olympics - unissued ? appears on recent cd

? not heard, but possible

electrons is same as the others but van mccoy is completely different song. hope this helps.

  • Author

yep very helpful Benji, cheers!

put a ? by ones not 100% sure off, so if anyone can confirm/deny :)

Seems theres also another similiar titled one "t'aint no big thing" - which is a john lee hooker type of thing

other not confirmed but fit the bill

Scotty Todd on Phillips ?

one that desperate to hear is Ralfi Pagan version, on Ralfi Pagan With Love lp, dunno if got 45 release, but did get issued as flip of latin soul on spanish vampisoul reissue 45 recently.

above one a good example of why wasting me time, not just a case of digging, its a cases of most of the times its the stuff that you stumble across is what that makes it enjoyable.

Ther Ralfi Pagan led me to some cracking latin soul stuff

anyway add

Scotty Todd?

Ralfi Pagan?

Holiday Band? ( a dodgy one as its a recent beach music type cover, but.... :) )

think its about 17 probables so far, dont reckon going to reach that 50 figure but has to be a few more knocking around..maybe

Yeh - I'm sure we can get to 50!

Here's another - Jimmy Cliff . His version of Ain't No Big Thing is awesome.

And of course there's the SPONTANES version (other side of WHERE DID I GO WRONG on UA)...

not sure if its the same tune...

Donna Mcghee - It aint no big thing..

fantastic!

The reason i posted this up was i had just heard B M on an old Dickie Watt tape and thought how good it was any idea of price

and which is the best

link

Either Radiants on Chess or Jimmy James does a splendid version

Gawd knows how many version's I'll start the ball rolling and say 50 but I'm probably wrong

Jimmy James is tops for me,but the Embers version runs it a close second.

The Spontanes..flip of Where did  go wrong..

the gasher

Haven't heard this

Any chance of a Soundfile Gash you silver fox you :D

Radiants, Tempests off the Album, Jimmy James must rate as three of the best versions, i know there are many...........

Regards - Mark Bicknell

Ahh The Tempest's is a good version , but there is some much great stuff ont hat album you sometimes forget it :D

There must be at least 20 versions or something. Seems to be an extensively covered tune.

Jordan Brothers on ID Records best I've heard  :P

Absolutely Mr W and from the absolute class 5th Anniversary tape too!! :D

I love playing the Radiants version, nice nice tune indeed...

Anyone mentioned Sparkz on Bell (not the pop group!), which I think was Patrick Adams? Commanda also did it I seem to recall

Commanda also did it I seem to recall

link

Yep, B-side of one of their Dynamic releases I think but slower than the other cuts I seem to remember...

So let's see......so far we have:

Bill Murphy

Radiants

Tempests

Jimmy James

Spontanes

Electrons

Jordan Bros

Little Joe & latinares

Sparkz

Commands

Any additions?

I've heard the Spontanes cover and thought it was very beachy sounding and not a patch on the flip which is one of my personal faves. I also remember seeing the song on a playlist on Cotillion but can't remember who it was (presuming it's same song of course). Anyone know??

My fave is either Jordan Bros or Little Joe. Tempestes is nice but like Rich said it's often overlooked due to quality of other stuff on album. This said though, it was played by Mr Tony Hatfield at the Friendship last month and sounded superb wink.gif (and got a few dancers I seem to remember)

Mark

Think i mentioned the EMBERS billy. .

And they did it here.......bless !!!!

Looks now as if United Artists got confused and used Kui Lee credit . An easy mistake do we think ?

This is the actual Kui Lee track
