If that's Carl from Mansfield he was at the last Brighouse Ritz! First time I've seen him anywhere for ages.

Great dancer, especially if you like the acrobatic type. Such a smooth mover and must be bloody double jointed

I could watch Kirtsy's friend (Gail) for hours and hours, but the terms of my ASBO probably wouldnt allow it

I believe Andy Simpson ( The Pittance)from Bradford was pretty good in his heyday.

Yeah Andy WAS good, but you couldnt be within 6 feet of him when he was spinning or you would be sprayed with sweat or lashed to death with his hair.

The best dancer was his mate Kegsy, never seen anyone do back drops and spring back up like he did.

His footwork was tremendous.

Anyone remember Tony Gordon from Bournemouth. No acrobatics, totally superb on the spot footwork, no sliding around. Probably the coolest guy I ever met. He'd wear 50s style clothing. He could also hold conversations in rhyme. Finished up as sax player in Blue Rondo A La Turk in the early 80s with Mark Riley (a nifty jazz funk dancer himself), who went on to become Matt Bianco.

I will agree with the vote for young Johnny Stanley ........

Nothing flashy as said , but a gentleman who could " ride the rhythm " , whatever the record .......

...your forgetting

Flipsy Whipsy from Farnham,

had a lovely cornetto spin and smooth creamy interpretation of the music. Hundreds and thousands used to come to see him dance wherever he was. Ice cool character through and through! 99 percent sure he was seen melting into the background at Prestatyn. thumbsup.gif

Rarely seen him in recent years think he had a regular nights job and had to work weekends to boot. Don't know if that's why he dropped off the scene or not though.

Yeah I remember Tony - a great guy, haven't seen him since I left the South 25 years ago. He was a good amateur boxer (probably where he got his superb footwork from). Good dancer in the 'Modern' (at the time) style. Used to hang around with Tom Wylie and Mike ('Stroller') from Bournemouth. His name in Blue Rondo A La Turk was Moses Mountbassey.

I remember Tony, I used to love to watch him dance at some of our local do's years ago, in fact I reckon he was responsible for turning a lot of people onto Northern in Poole/Bournemouth, his brother Connie is still going I believe, he had 3 sisters Shirley, Pauline & Gloria.......his Dad was a character as well, always have a chat, he was a boxer in Jamaica if I remember (Con Snr that is).

Frank Booper :P

Booper could spin, but couldnt really dance, when the "Wheel" ended and everyone moved to Blackpool Mecca (in its first inccarnation) the big buzz surrounded a lad nicknamed "Tash" from Blackpool.

For weeks the rumours were rife - "Booper is comming up this weekend and he's gonna do Tash" etc.

Although this all sounds very childish now it was all part of the the scene back in the days when, two tone suits, como's + a tie were de rigour of the "in crowd"

Anyway comes the night, after weeks, when he (Booper) finally shows up.

Tash on the floor with his mate, glasses taped to his head, moving and grooving at a pace!!!

got the picture?

His mate links his hands together and tash uses them as a springboard to launch a back summersault,

then lands in perfect time with the tune ( i cant remember what it was ) into a furious spin, back drop again, up, and back into the dance routine. 10.10 for artistic content and technique.

Booper looks on in amazement, shakes his head and wasn't seen again that night.

With regards to today's star performers, Carl, as previous posts, is as good as ive seen, plus Sam Evans is without doubt one of the best girl dancers ever in the last 38 years.

John, Agree with your point about Sam, whats more she can dance to every genre too, not just to one style of soul.

cant comment on your other point as i was only 3 at the time of the first Mecca nighters! Great story though...

You coming up on Saturday?

That bloke dressed like a pirate who i first clocked at Prestatyn this year and again at Middleton last weekend... Does anyone know this person????

Steve,

Think I know the one you mean. Haven't seen him since Prestatyn, (or was it Cleethorpes) couple of years ago. Appeared all of a sudden for the Saturday afternoon session, dancing away while the rest of the floor was empty. Completely OTT, dripping in chunky jewellery etc. Is this the same guy?

Couldn't believe it - thought it was Roger Banks on a wind up, or someone had got the days for the fancy dress mixed up  Anyone know who he is?

(Hope it's not anyone on here, if it is apologies :P )

Colin " Bruno " Brunt .......

When in full flow on the dance floor , it was like watching Rod Hull wrestle with Emu ..........

Get Colin on the dancefloor at the same time as Mick " Scotty " Scott , and there was guaranteed to be fireworks .......

Snowy I will agree was good , but one of the best I have seen , was Bob " Bojangles " Mellor .........

Had a call from him yesterday. He is still on the scene attending the local poole/bournemouth soul nights. Still a great dancer, still as cool as ever - still collecting records and occasionally DJ'ing.

Bill 'Bambi' Bowen from Bognor (i think?)

Used to spin and come out with a Stag leap into splits! Never used to graze himself. Amazing stuff. Forest supporter. Friend of Tony Buck, I think. Real larger than life character. Not really sure what neck of the woods he was from?

Cough, Cough, Ahem, apparantly I was rated as a good dancer (72-78). Not self publicity, honest!

Some of my old mates might in this forum? I left the 'scene' but the nor music in late 70t's, but get to the Big Cub in Aycliffe whenever I can.

Famous for my russian cossack. Jethro and I and used to dance in the same spot every week near the stage at the Casino and bacame good pals, along 'Little Kim'. They both appeared on Top of the Pops.

Most people know me by nickname, Rory (Gallagher) originally from Newton Aycliffe, now live in Marlow, Bucks.

I await the abuse!

There was a lad from the Warrington area Martin Houghton (or Horton) who was the best stomper I ever saw, when So Is The Sun came on he was incredible.

Wonder what happened to him?

.....then there was

Sammy 'Slug' Smith from somerset

now he was a real dancer. Used to stick to floor all night long, never sat down. Not even for 1 tune! Salt of the earth! Id rake him as one of the best!

From what I remember he used to take pellets to keep him 'fizzing' all night and he had a sort of natural 'antennae' for a good earthy tune.

Haven't seen him for a while?

Just spoke with Tony Gordon - guy on right IS Mike Lefcon. Mike actually won a couple of dance competitions himself - the best part is, he didn't know he was in the contests!!!!

You could hear the beats pound

As they stomped across the ground

And the claps from their hands

As they spun round and round

And he galloped into Station Road

His badge upon his blazer, his pint of milk upon the stage

His name was Ernie

And he was the fastest stomper in the north

Until that nasty business with Two Ton Ted from Teddington
