Guest gordon russell Posted October 19, 2009 Share Posted October 19, 2009 Sat in the back of a hilman hunter (herberts brother lol) with glen stuart both only 15/16 with some other older lads on our way to stoke.......seemed like a hell of a long way back then,the heater never worked and it was feckin cold out,let alone driving up the motorway at over 50 mph. Got there at about midnight,parked in a little square and walked through a little alley at the other end of the street.Hose street seemed kinda quiet as we got to the torch (who nicked the bulbs out of the golden bit) paid our money 75p l think?,bit like going in the pictures,turned left 5 or 6 steps THEN FUCKING WHAM !!! Like you mate, I was into it at the time. Voraciously soaking up all the new (to me) choons the older local Torch lads were bringing back and playing at a small local do in town on Thursday nights. Borrowing choons to tape with a mic in front of me mum & dad's stereogram. After hearing a few things about the Torch thought fook it I'll chance it. Some of the locals would have looked after me but some of them would have "done me" just because they were bastards and didn't like us "young 'uns". Oddly enough the good guys were those into sounds as well as gear but the bad 'uns were those who could recite the A-Z of gear but couldn't name one f'kin record. Got all psyched up to brave it, ready to go and they shut the f'kin place So by the time I got to go anywhere it was Top Rank Hanley fer me and my very first memory is Bub in that black (with red trim) blazer he used to wear back then. Also used to see loads of scooters bombing around the Potteries, always remember seeing dozens of scooters lined up outside the Cinebowl in Broad Street Hanley, which later became the Steam Machine. I can remember all the older lads at Moorside Youth Club in Stoke on about the Torch closing & some place in Wigan called the Casino stopping open all night!!!! See ya all at the Torch Reunion. LITTLE Willie [ Glyn Williams ] been gone along time ago mate, i'd say it was around 76/77, around that period there was many from the STOKE area who fell by the wayside through over indulgence. Willie ended up choking to death in his sleep on his own sick. Loveable young lad but in my opinnion got into deep on the drug culture side of the scene,WILLIE was a few years younger than myself and a few others from STOKE who more or less introduced him to the music, but it came apparent pretty quickly that he was'nt going to take any advice as far as drugs were concerened and he was going to do is own thing. I'd just like to mention and remember his mate who departed shortly after WILLIE and only lived two minutes from WILLIE - SHAWN DAVISON another young STOKE LAD.Both could'nt have been no older then 19. ME + BUTCH knew them well, Butch better than me though as they both were in a five miute walk from him. All in all they both loved the music firstly but sadly they both lost out to the down side of the scene like many before and many after BOTH SADLY MISSED [ R I P ] LITTLE WILLIE & SHAWN. Can you guys post up some play lists of Torch sounds since I've never been able to distinguish between what was played at the Cats, VaVa and actual Torch plays...........and anyone know who first played the Nite-Liters - K-Jee, which I'm told was a Torch tune...?? Always wasn't like that, thinking back in '72 what I did for work and what kind of money I was earning, etc. In 1972 I was trainee estate agent, shock horror............. earning about £10 a week to supplement my vinyl thirst I worked in a pub nights if you have do an extra job that's not a bad one, my mates certainly thought so I was driving a very dodgy Ford Cortina MK I, the brakes once failed on the motorway coming up to the Torch, what an experience that was............... All my money went Martin Koppell in Canada, Record Corner Balham, Moondogs in fact anywhere (I think I still Martin a fiver ) no money for clothes or those type of luxuries Me leaving my house off to the Torch, what a dorky shirt, I think my mum must have made it out of old curtains or a table cloth. Aahh halcyon days, there was NOTHING quite like queing up to get in at the Torch I get shivers just thinking about it. See yers there. No tell us all WHERE WERE YOU IN 72 ?? Do tell.................................... Chris L Like many others on this thread I left school and started an apprenticeship at HH Robertsons in Ellesmere port. I liked Motown Stax type records and had just started buying Blues&Soul incorparating Home of the blues as it was called in those days. At work I met a guy called Charlie Taylor he was a regular Mecca goer and lent me a few tunes Jimmy soul Clarke ,California Montage and April Stevens. A regular sunday night thing then was the Bowaters Social club werer the DJ used to throw in a few Northern sounds at the end of the night Charlie suggested a trip to the Raven in Whitchurch we got a bus and travelled with a girl called Geraldine and her mate Carol from Chester great night Soul Sam was on the first time I heard Frankie Beverly and The Poets Two Hearts, Under My Thumb was a big record. Don't know if any of those caracters are still around (except Sam) as I don't visit the venues, but I'll echoe everybody elses sentiments that they were great times and started my love for Northern! Can remember listening to "Going to a GO GO" on Radio Luxembourg and a good few other gems, but the poor little radio's reception wasn't too clever and so everything was crackling and I'd be frantically trying to tune it in - oh those were the days - no central heating - loads of blankets on the bed which weighed an absolute ton when you got under them. My lads are in the early twenties now but when they were younger (teens) they were moaning about being cold, nowt in the fridge etc etc, me and mum sat 'em down and told 'em how it was. No central heating frost on the inside of the windows no phone no car no fridge/freezer 4 channels on the box no dishwasher twin tub washing machine ( a luxury) no gas fire bath once week (sundays) running downstairs freezing to get in front of fire sitting on the draining board with feet in the sink for a strip wash holiday was a caravan with gas lights and no running water etc etc There were a lot more and we really laid it on 'em. Now i knowthere was one from Wedensfield & one from Stoke, but can anybody remember a coloured lad from Manchester who frequented the Casino in the early days whose nickname was also Willie.Would have imagined he was one of the boys not to mess with has he knew quite a few of the Stoke rouges of that day. From what i can remember he was quite tall and slim and i imagine he would be in hid mid- 50's now if he is still with us [ hope he is ]. Was wondering if anybody can elaborate on this. Cheers. CODDY ONE OF THE ELDER STOKE LADS WAS APPROACHED BY THE YOUNG STOKIE AND INFORMED HIM WHAT HAD GONE ON. CODDY KNEW WILLIE AND TOLD HIM WHAT HAD GONE ON AND WAS NOT TOO PLEASED ABOUT IT. HE ASKED WILLIE TO ENQUIRE ABOUT THE SITUATION AND IF THE STOKE LAD WAS NOT REUNITED WITH HIS PILLS WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THE DOORS OPENING THEIR WAS GOING TO BE TROUBLE. THANK F*K THE SITUATION WAS RESOLVED SOON AFTER GETTING INSIDE THE CASINO. WILLIE RETRIEVED THE SAID MERCHANDISE FROM THE MANC LADS AND PASSED THEM ONTO CODDY, THEN CODDY PASSED THEM BACK TO THE YOUNG STOKE LAD. Chris L Posted December 19, 2009 Author Share Posted December 19, 2009 Well I would have been twelve and remember taking the little radio to bed and hiding under the covers listening to Radio Luxembourg and trying to keep the volume low enough so my big sister couldn't hear it, Oh it all seems like yesterday............ I wish...... Boy was that radio station ever a life-saver, we couldn't wait until about 7.30pm when we could start to receive it. HAPPY DAYS! Do you remember the very last record they played every night (early morning) when they were switching off the station ?? I used to date a girl from Stevenage and that was about 2 hours drive away so I'd leave her about 11/11.30 then catch the last hour or so of Radio Luxembourg.............................. what was that car you ask ?? lizziep Posted December 19, 2009 Share Posted December 19, 2009 In 1972 I was working at the Co-op on a Friday straight from school and all day Saturday for £1.40p and I'd bought my ticket for Al Green at the Torch and my pills and still had enough money for shopping in Hanley to buy some Mary Quant lipstick!! I remember being in Rowntree sounds around 74 and needing a wee bit of gear before heading off to Wigan and chatting to one of the ex Wheel crowd who used to hang out in there. He told me he could get some stuff and went and made a phonecall he came back and said we had too pick it up in another pub. There was two of us and we headed off with him to the get the gear - we had to cross through a very dark playground and the guy kept looking around as if he was expecting someone - we got to the pub and he made excuses that his mate hadn't turned up. I was told later that he had actually rang some mates and they were going to roll us in the playground but his mates didn't show. Odd but we became good mates with the guy after that( I won't name him as he died in 76) and he would always help to genuinely sort us out with stuff after that. He was really tall even bigger by a fair bit than Big Ray from North Sheilds and Ray was tall.
