Possibly Interesting Observations About Playing Oldies

Recommended Posts

I got this box of records today, loads of oldies, so thought I'd do a podcast with a few things I haven't heard or played for a long time, so amongst the class items like Ronnie Mcnair, Billy Hambric, Frank Dell and so on, I put a few kind of 'never played anywhere' records on: LJ Johnson "Your magic put a spell on me", The Present "Manys the slip", Joey Dee "How can I forget", Benny Curtis "Dirty hearts"....and the interesting thing was, I absolutely LOVED hearing those records, maybe it's because I just couldn't remember when I last heard them but my favourite of the entire lot (today) was that inst of How Can I Forget! I remember my first ever trip to Wigan and this and Little Joe Cook were the two biggest sounds at the time.

It just made me think how great it was back then when you could play almost anything. Granted it got a bit silly with all the UK label records in 78, but I think I definitely preferred the mid 70's to anything that followed it.

I was not that keen on Benny Curtis back than, but I did buy it.

Someone played it at Burnley All-Nighter last year and it sounded great.

I didn't like it much either - ever - but it sounded bloomin' brilliant earlier on today. People thought this was a Soussan job when it first appeared, presumably cos it sounds just like The Joker.

Remember getting a copy of L.J.Johnson on an emidisc before it got released and spending a full Sunday

morning at work knocking up a 20th Century Label (because I was told that's what it was coming out on ! )

(work in graphic design but in those days it was Letraset & Cameras , no computers then matey!)

Memories hey!

then it came out on another 'kin label laugh.gif:lol::no: was it Phillips ????

Cheers

Swifty

This made me laugh because I did EXACTLY the same thing with WEAK SPOT: everyone said it was coming out on Private Stock and I spent two schoolnights making a Private Stock label for it, only to see it come out on 20th century.

I remember buying an Emidisc of Doris Jones "He's so irreplaceable" at Wigan, great version, I asked Ian levine about this a couple of years ago and he said that version never came out and was in fact lost. Wonder what happened to it..

I had the demo, looked mint, skipped randomly and could never trust it, Terry Davies and Neil Jones had the same problem, maybe just coincidence, we all ended up gettin an issue, and all hammered it, must be 10 years ago,

Remember that well!! Your mate Mick had that Vestax portable player and he told me the story about the Demo's but mine played perfect, it was mint but I sold that and kept the issue that was only excellent plus but everyone said the issue was harder to find!! Good old tune anyway! Atb John.

find it happens with a few things now nowadays

aint really gave it much attention for years, you then play it now, and for what ever reason it sort of takes on a different aspect

you hear things going on that didnt really notice or grab you before

dunno why

it may be just that nowadays quality is so much better

or hearing it in a different sort of enviroment

if you wanna get scientific guess someone could even argue a case it may be something to do with your ears/listening changing as get older (you lose different frequencies) laugh.gif

Played Evelyn Thomas "Doomsday" on the radio monday evening as a lost spin, sounded good after not hearing it for a very long time, instant memory of manic dancing in the Casino.

As for the Four Pros it needs to be lost for about 10 years, massively over played in North Wales and a few other places and all way before Burnley.

That's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking about, something you wouldn't normally play but you give it a go and it sounds great. All this reminds me of when I read Mark Freeman's oldies playlists when he DJ's, he seems to have no fear.

Sorry if this is a daft question, but I wasn't around back then. Why would you want to bootleg a record which would shortly be going on widespread general release?

IIRC, Ian Levine had a number of copies of various tracks that he had recorded, including the above, in circulation on the scene, on an orange label called Tomorrow, to create a buzz while he tried to place them with major companies.

Same as what Jerry says below. Ian sent out promo copies to various 'influential' dj's on a label called Tomorrow, the rest of us plebs had to make do with emidiscs, bear in mind these were spun a good 2 months before they were released to create a huge demand.

Benny Curtis & The Present are fairly regular spins down under in Perth Pete. BC sounds excellent 2nd time round and The Present brings back memories of the loudest collective clapping I can ever recall. One of the reasons I now suffer from screaming tinnitus:lol:

I blame mine on the Hinckley leisure all nighters sound system...stupidly loud and always distorted

Or maybe it is because I press my headphones firmly against my head to really appreciate the bass lines in tracks

I hear the occasional Oldie/Classic 'out of context' at the collectors nights over here (no dancefloor, but curry and pizza available!), and you can defo hear different qualities within the track that one may have missed before.
