Yeah, bit earlier Rain wasn't it? Not all doom & gloom latter period of the Casino, some prime soul to come out of that period, white included, Construction ala Del Capreez, regards to general soul, reckon even Larry Clinton didnt get spun till 78 onward.

I used to take a cassette, never really a success, wish i could find em now.

Just used to get mine from Manship, a lot of Soul Sam stuff on those, stuff not getting played at Wigan, remember Jimmy Burns on one, long before it got played at the Casino.

Got one 45 left: One side The Tempose c/u (Lil Lavair and the Fabulaous Jades I think) - I'll Be So Happy b/w Lesley Gore - Just Casn't Get Enough of you (same as Apollas on Loma), think this is album only but not sure. Got this from Eric Hetherington local respected DJ we used to look up to as a 16 year old.

Just found an album but don't remember track listing - sure it includes Rain tho. Terrible sound quality.

The paper flier is an insert from an album put out locally, I'm thinking 1990s but not too sure. Can remember who but perhaps politeness should rule.

I also remember this album, ground breaking at the time and it was put out by ....rolleyes.gif ah well as you say, politeness

Not sure why they put that credit to Charity Brown on the reissue, it wasn't on the original.

By Rain it was a top ten hit in Canada circa 1971. We weren't to know that back thenrolleyes.gif

Charity was solo by 75 and the "re-issue" was intended to cash in on her new status and the popularity in the UK, not really a boot/pressing but A re-issue.

I had one with Lorraine Silver on as well, this was before it was played at Wigan and was only getting played at St Ives, it was meant to be Down In The Dumps by Tony Hester but the chap who did them couldn't get that. Having said that, we got a sort of exclusive as it wasn't really known and it became a big record locally via my emidisc. Just for the record - I still think it's great! (Other tracks on there were Bernie Williams, Rain and Al De Lory)

Just remembered I also had a jeanette harper / anderson brothers, a detroit executives / phyllis brown - i've got something on my mind, which I don't think was ever played anywhere, maybe the Mecca?

Ironic this but Charity Brown's real name is Phyllissmile.gif>>>>>>

Don't think Charity Brown was white though and l'm sure that l saw her on the telly a few times :D

Funny you should say that; I also remember seeing her on the TV on things like Morecombe & Wise maybe, and I swear she was black with an afro. Maybe we're thinking of somebody else. I was really surprised when I did a search on google and saw all those photos of a white lady.

78 was the year that most of the poorer white records started getting played (Nita Rossi, Blue Chips, Sue Lynne that sort of thing) mainly but not exclusively by Keith Minshull to be honest. I've got a tape of Pep playing Rain in about October 76 and the clapping on it is so loud (also on same tape Matt Lucas, Rosemary, Jay & The Americans Got hung up along the way (played by RS), Yum Yums, Broadway Cissy, Johnny Williams Just a little misunderstanding, Ron Holden, Gentlemen & Their Lady Like Her 12", French Fries, MVP's, Ronnie McNeir, Astral trip - I know all this off by heart having played it so many times after I taped it)

What was 'Blue Chips' ? I dont remember that

.Also , I think its fair to say that although WC gets all the bad press about the crappy pop stuff lets not forget that other venues were playing it too .For example Im sure Sue Lynne & Murial Day were first played , ( along with Lorraine Silver ), at St Ives or The Wirrina . And , Rain was getting plays at Kettering Central Hall when I first started doing dayers there in 75 ..........Having said that WC did seem to play more of it than St Ives & Peterborough .

Anyway , back on track I seem to remember emi's being 4 quid each in 76 .....Imagine the originals that could have been bought with that 4 quid back then :D :D

Blue Chips - Tell Her - UK Pye.

Beat version of Dean Parrish - actually it's not that bad but nowhere near as good as Dean's version.

I iwsh I knew who I was thinking of! Penny Lane?

Charity Brown and Phylis Brown are definitely the same white woman. Her p;ic was on the back of the RAIN album. I also used to request Phylis Brown' s "Oh Baby" at Wigan and I think we knew at that time they were one and the same.

Pete, you're not thinking of Polly Brown are you? Out of Pickettywitch and then Sweet Dreams.

When she formed part of the Sweet Dreams duo we weren't supposed to know who she was and she made her self up like a black woman in press shots and, on at least one infamous occasion, on Top of the Pops in 1974 singing Honey Honey.

My dad sussed her straight away I recall

No, I know Polly Brown - but I'd never heard that story of TOTP before, and I don't think I believe it either

you know I think I may actually have that on video, I've got 40 or 50 TOTP's, surely she wouldn't have gone to such extremes..

Found a clip, she's got dark make up on and her hair is black but I don't think she's doing a black and white minstrel job

I can't believe that (again) Paul, Phyllis Brown was based in the Carolinas wasn't she (Sonny & Phyllis, The Nomads etc) - same name but surely not same person

Well I remember seeing Sweet Dreams somewhere and there was definitely a black looking singer and my dad said "that's Polly Brown" Can't remember if it was TV or in a mag though.

I think that was the show that caused a stir. She's obviously trying to look quite different from how she appeared in Pickettywitch

I think you're right about Phylis on reflection. Just a coincidence that they both used that name maybe?

Got a few including All Of a Sudden/What Can I Do, Cashing In. Long Gone , How To Make A Sad Man Glad.

This weekend I have been tiding the garage up, as some if not all of us do now and again. I took the lid of one of my boxes of soul mags and the top one was Blues & Soul from March 1971.

In Dave Godin's column he wrote " I Hear that a real racket in white label dubbed copies of in-demand records is flooding the Northern Soul Scene. It will be short lived I think"

He covers the illegality of it, the unfairness to those involved in the making of the records not receiving royalties and tax avoidance.

Dave's closing sentence" There is a world of difference between taping a rare record for your own use, and this wholesale illicit manufacture for gain. So don't be a sucker - the originals can often be bought quite legally much cheaper too !.

Interestingly there was not one advert in the mag for a function. Certainly changed not long later.

The only one I ever had was The Pointer Sisters "Send Him Back" / Bobby Paris "Night Owl" at the time it was the most I'd ever paid for a record £5 -- 1975,

Got it from a lad from Huddersfield (no name sorry),who used to Dj at the Friday night "Disco" at the old Radcliffe civic hall

Until the advent recently of rare studio cuts fetching big money , I seem to recall that in the mid 70s , the " going " rate for a two - sided Emidisc was £5 each .

Anyone pay more than that ?

Yes, was a massive record in 76 and early 77, then reissued on that Axe label that Webby mentions.

It's one of those records that people say is pop crap but it used to sound great blasted out loud at Wigan.

In respect of Rain .....

Whilst LADY B and I were on a trip to California in 1980 , we went to Disneyland , and a group called Rain were playing live sets there twice a day .

I wondered if it was the same group who had recorded " OOMM " , so we watched their afternoon performance ( good pop

/ MOR ) , and upon them finishing their set , I went up and asked them if they were THE Rain .

They told me that they were the same group , and were intrigued that people in England knew about the record , as it had been a relative failure in the US .

EMI Disks are part of the vinal production, cut on a lath from sound scource master tape, the disk then goes through a process to produce metal stampers that go on the pressing machines. Each blank EMI Disk has a shelf life, like a use before date as they apparantly deteriate in quality.Any out of date disks should then be scrapped. However the disks can still be cut and play ok.Studio disks would be used for a variety of reasons including quality control. The disk you had will probably have been cut from an obsolete disk therefore being cheap to turnover.Obviously you would need access to a cutting studio and an engineer. There is a thread on here somewhere that discusses the pressing of records.

Wrighty.

I can honestly say, I've only ever owned one, and can remember vividly the night/whereabouts (albeit not the exact date) I bought it!.... Approx 1975 at the "Oval" in Cheltenham on a Tuesday night, where I remember Jerry "Hippo" Hipkiss was in"residence"......Hot Line- Reggie Garner was on the one side (Can't quite remember the flip), albeit I actually recall it due to the fact that on leaving for home at the "finale"@ 1 Am and having to wait til 4 AM for the train home to the "port" with a severe case of the "squits"......

Whilst subsequently concluding the shellac had influenced my "regularity........ I suddenly decided to go totally OVO........It was indeed a case of s-it or bust!

.....A True Emidisc experience

No, but I knew somebody who had one of Weakspot; how sad is that? I knew somebody else that had an LP with 20 odd tracks on - stuff like Lend a Hand, Better use your Head, If you ever walked out of my life. Within a few months I had the whole of it on British reissues except that dreadful 3 Degrees track.

It's not that sad because it was played on pre-release for a long time before it came out on 20th century and before Ian had those Tomorrow label demos made up, the only way anyone could get it was to get an emidisc done. It was truly massive at the time so all the dj's needed a copy.

Had a 10" one with

pat powdrill - do it

lou ragland - i travel alone

yvonne daniels - don't want to get away from your love

can't remember the last but it may have been an inst covered as "The Baltimore Band"

Wasn't that Baltimore band Bill Purcell - Heartbeat? And which of you many EMIdiscs was the one with Chris Cerf on it? I always thought that was the same one as the Lorraine Silver (which was a big hit in Wombourne, and I still love it too)
