Keep coming!! bring a mate or two, eventually one will be hooked and he/or her will bring a couple and hey presto!! we have a revival on our hands!! MELS Posted August 30, 2011 Share Posted August 30, 2011 Twisted wheel last night (26th august) four younger people came ip from london 3 girls 1 guy They looked really smart and alll of them were good dancers they were made to feel welcome by us crinklies think and hope that they had a really good time said that they hope to come to the next Sunday session would love some feedback from them on here So like I said in an earlier reply ignore the stupid bigots who basically think that you have to have been into the soul scene for 45 years keep going to soul nights cos without you younger guys the scene will wither and die! Spike (52 year old and feeling it this morning ) Despite the grey hair, I was just too young to go to Wigan. I came to Northern Soul late and it has been a wonderful voyage of discovery. Personally, I have found most people to be great and happy to share knowledge about the music, although in the past, I have had a couple of dismissive comments from obviously self-appointed, superior authentic soulies due to my lack of pedigree or experience. I still get the rush when I hear a great 'new' sound. Do they? I am 21 years old and have been into it for about 3 or so years now. I started of going with a mate the same age as me but he moved away so i go with people much older. I will be honest and admit i do somtimes have people look at me strange and I have had people ask me "should you not be in bed" "does ur mummy know your out etc." This is not everyone just a small few. Do people think it is strange someone so young is into northern soul with all older people? Have people forgot they were young when they were into it? How can we get more youngester in the scene? Russ and I always keen and have put in some effort to get a few more younger ones in and give a couple up and coming DJ's a chance (likes of 'Young Brett' and Jamie for example) play some tunes when at some other venues its a closed shop/no chance. Its also good as it lowers the average age in the room from about 48 down to about 31 when you and your mates get in at 'Caliente'!! Now if young blood wants to come onto the scene and enjoy it as much as I have then all well and good, try it, if you like it you will stick with it. Don't get knocked by the knockers on the scene, do what you want to do, if you want to sit in a corner and listen and not dance then do so, if you want to collect then do so, get out of the scene what you want, there are more good genuine people on the scene than the other way round. This may be helpful for you to know , try to travel to Europe if you can where there appears to be a much younger crowd at the do's that are held in Italy , Spain and Germany for example. When I lived in Colchester Ady C and Donna had a do going at the arts centre , it was lovely to see more young people than old , they did not have any hang ups about oldies and newies and loved the sounds played. Same vibe was had at Liams do at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester , so there are other do's where you might find more youngsters attend . I think living in a city or town where there are students is an added bonus because I think they tend to want to explore music more? Lots of the crowd in Coly were either students, or the threatre staff that backed onto the venue. Having said that please carry on going to do's here and ignore anyone that makes childish remarks . Don't ever lose it - 'keep the faith' as the (now long in the tooth - but fook it) saying goes. In the early 90's some of my mates began to peel away and listen to Indie music - not me baby! If I just had Roy Hamilton & Garland Green records to listen to every day, that'd do me. Great thing about our scene is all are welcome, regardless of age, gender or race. She loves the music, and has even started to buy her own records!! Her boyfriend is 30 and a proper indie/old skool fan, but after getting dragged along to Harpo & Sandi's wedding is now also a fan! They may not be "youngsters" in the accepted term, and they do get looked up & down a bit at some places, as they can look a bit out of place at some events, Luckily, we know enough people for them to feel welcome wherever we go, and they tend not to notice, or even care! Went there on the off chance as I was staying in the Bay of Roses with Perditta . We found the majority to be under 35 and it was fab ! They danced to everything and a good time was had by all. Well you should definitely just dive in and get yourself along to some soul nights, its all about meeting like-minded people (if not like-aged) lol. Where in the country do you live? Just take a look at some upcoming events where you live and just go to one or two. Its great to see interest from younger people if only to keep the floor filled while we older dudes take a breather.
