I bought a copy of Manifesto on the red/yellow Legend label from Canada

which was advertised as a pressing

i also bought an Okeh Demo of Hurry Sundown by Little Richard advertised as "Same both sides"

when i got it it was actually , I Dont Want to Discuss it on the other side and it wasn't a miss label either i think i paid five bucks for it and it was mint

I bought a Ronnie Mc Neir - Sitting in My Class advertised as a pressing and it was an original. Result!

Wasn't a Northern track, but I was sold "The Wallflower" by Etta James in the late '80s as a boot on Modern for £2, and only realised about 6 years later (after I had sold it for the same price ) that it was an original.

Only green styrene copies with stick on labels and stamped ZTSC are original

and Yellow label with Red lettering

Green vinyl with molded label and scratched matrix are boots

yellow label black writing are boots

white label copies are boots

I know. But why is the yellow/red labelled issue at all considered an original? Its catalogue number is 13 numbers after the green styrene issue. Surely a reissue of some sort?

There are many instances of records coming out twice on the same label

I first heard Aint Nothing You Can Do....Joe Matthews early on in my formative years on the scene. Dont know where exactly. Mecca rings a bell 74ish. Became more aware of it again much later at Wigan when RS was pushing it. 75/76ish? It became very quickly my fave tune. I wouldnt say I ran to the floor to dance but I did hurry when it was aired. I was at Wigan one night and there was some guys set up selling records at the bottom of the upstairs cloakroom stairs. I started browsing thru there boxes not paying much attention really. Then there it was. Joe Matthews on red Koolkat There were a few copies. I purchased. I just thought it had been booted. I think I paid £1.00 for it. Wouldnt have been much more cos I wasnt a big collector. Only years later did I find out that it never got booted on red only on white DJ. I lost that disc. I dont where. I think an ex girlfriend had it........... or maybe she still has it. Shes well off the scene now and I dont think she knows what shes got. BUGGER!!!

I have only found the yellow / red labelled copies of case of tyme in Chicago. I don't look at rock records though so maybe if I did I would have more experience finding the green one. These copies I found were used and in people's collections, I don't know how they could be considered bootlegs or even non-originals. It may have caught on a little later and got repressed? Either way, I can't imagine that it's more than a year later than the green label.

to make you feel worse the b side is even better

Brought a Boot of Herbert Hunter at Gloucester Alldayer back in the late 80's for a couple of quid, within minutes was informed it was real and an offer of £40 came in for it, took it in a flash lol

similar story , bought a gary haines for £6 as it was too dark couldnt make out if it was stamped . put it in bag and forgot about it till home, result nashville matrix

Dates spot on, played at the Mecca summer 74, and Dickie started playing at Wigan around Christmas 75.

When Thelma Lindsey 1st got sold at Secect-a-disc, sent for a copy and hey presto a stamped orig.

Well spent 85p, this was about 6 months before I started collecting originals only.

apparently the wd of spellbound on golden world that i ended up with as no one wanted it at the time was an original, loads of them about at the time, always thought they were boots, still convinced, and as for the manifesto scenario, had a green one, and a yellow one with red writing, got rid of the green one thinking it was a boot,then years later got rid of the yellow one thinking it was a boot,

must look at my dirty green coloured copies of maurice williams and the the salvadores, look good to me

I remember all those spellbound demo's comming to Wigan

As was the case back then somebody would find many copies of the same record and bring them by the box load to sell

the Tamiko Jones demo's were around at the time she appeared live at the casino and several people got them signed

I also read that John Anderson found 200 copies of Lou Pride in a warehouse but you still don't see many of them !

Not forgetting a guy who turned up with a full box of Verve demo's all High Keys Living a lie and Clara Ward Right Directions Price £4 each LoL

i can still see black rca records in daves surplus in derby back in the 70,s, ive still got sharon scott and the metros, wtf, is dave still alive can we contact him ?

There you go indeed, just pulled the copy of James Lewis from my pressings boxes and upgraded it to the " real" box.. Always thought it was a cheapie reissue... Cheers lads..

Now if only I'd made the same mistake with the Gwen Owens and Mel Britt pressings...

When originals turn up in quantity, some people always say they are boots, for one reason or another!

Then it came out on UK Contempo. The Contempo was a 70's recut version and not as good as the original.

i remember the guy had a box full all warehouse stock (never been out of the sleeve ) i think they were £4 each

It was pressed, but not until 1978 on a green label

Was given issue copies of 'Don't Bring Me Down' and 'Tainted Love' by a former school friend who was of the opinion it was 'all over after Wigan' and they were worthless boots. Didn't bother with the two pairs of Spencer bags mind you.

 

A mate of mine was also given a white demo of 'If That's What You Wanted' as...

 

'White Label = boots'

Bought a boot of Girl across the street for 50p in 1975, it was only when I was selling up about 7 years ago & bought the Manship bootleg guide to help me check everything before listing them, that it turned out to be an original. It still sold for less than a boot of the Salvadors!
