Can anybody help me with any info ?

Garry

Good book but a bit out of date with all the new CD releases

Hi

The book is indeed out next week. There is not a single label scan or top ten in it, I'm afraid. That kind of material is ably covered by other books.

some good stories /anecdotes from some of the old crowd....  i am told ...   :)

Two books i found very interesting       WHAT THE MUSIC SAID ,       MARK ANTHONY NEAL       and   THE DEATH OF RHYTHM AND BLUES ,  NELSON  GEORGE .            Neither book is about the Northern scene  as such   , more about the evolution of black popular music in America . The first one was only published in America as far as i am aware ( could be mistaken)    sure there would be copies on  Amazon.    The Nelson George Book pinpoints the decline of the soul sound from the mid seventies .

Just been informed by Amazon that my copy has been despatched and should arrive tomorrow.  That's ten days earlier than the original release date quoted when I pre-ordered.  Just need the film to be released now, along with the realistically detailed Northern Soul action figures.

A Northern Soul book without any Northern Soul records featured?

Shrewd observation Pete. For a book about a music scene centred on imported 45's, I would expect scans that would have the serious collectors drooling, off-the-scene old timers revelling in nostalgia and watchers of the film further informed or inspired. Sure there are plenty of books with scans out there, but there is a level of expectation that the next book will better those that were published earlier or it least match the successful formats of the Mick Ritson then the Tim Brown volumes.

Hi,

I love reading about the Northern Soul `scene` in the 70s / 80s and wondered whether I`ve missed any books of this ilk.  So far I`ve read:

Northern Soul Stories - Neil Rushton

The Wigan Casino Years - Tim Brown

Too Darn Soulful - David Nowell

The In Crowd Vol 1 - Mike Ritson/ Stuart Russell

CENtral 1179 - Keith Rylatt/ Phil Scott

Casino - Dave Shaw

On The Right Track - Rob MvKeever

The Story Of Northern Soul - David Nowell

Night Shift - Pete McKenna

Soul Survivors - Russ Winstanley/ David Nowell

Searching For Soul - Reg Stickings

Do I Love You - Paul McDonald

Thanks in advance :)

Pete

'Mary Wells: The Tumultuous Life of Motown's First Superstar')

Yes. I did find it a good read and would recommend.

If you want a real eye opener and another good read, try Bettye Lavette's 'A Woman Like Me'.

Ordered the Mary Wells book last week & am expecting the postie to call with it any day now.

Have wanted Bettye's book since it came out but never got around to actually ordering a copy. Just picked one up from Amazon (Used  -- Like New) for £1.

......... can't be bad !!!!

Hope you enjoy them both.

Bettye's is a real eye opener. I bought it after reading a little about her in 'The Soulful Divas' - another good read.

Have you got 'Dream Boogie' - Sam Cooke biog. or 'Chicago Soul'? Worth looking for.

Anyone here read 'Motown: The Golden Years'   --   Bill Dahl ??

It's Kindle only so for me that's a bit of a drawback but may consider going electronic virtual book friendly in the future.

It is a decent price @ under a fiver and the photos were sourced from Weldon McDougal, so they're both plus points.

Did anyone catch that book by Garry Bushell that came out last year, Time For Action - The Mod Revival 1978-1981?  To be honest I only bought it because I know in 2 or 3 years time it'll be worth something but I read it and thought it was great, reprints all the original articles and adverts from Sound magazine for a start, great stuff.

Also there's A-Z of Mod by Paola Hewitt & Mark Baxter.

Yep you're right Dave BUT it only seems to be available in Kindle format these days (unless you buy a 2nd hand copy).

Is it worth chasing up a decent 'paper copy' ?

John,

Worth it for Weldon's photos alone. Bill Dahl's the guy who wrote the Arctic - 'Cool As Ice' sleeve notes recently.

Regards,

Dave

Another new book, this one looks really interesting ...........

... this ones by & about the life / career of Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie .......

.....  SOME INFO  .....

I have some exciting news.  I have a book coming out.  It will be called “Let the Drums Speak !”  Working with a wonderful writer named Ed Dennis, I have chronicled my life from a modest upbringing in Elkton, Maryland through my journey to becoming drummer for the stars.

We wanted to do this project our way (without a big publishing company at this point).

Seems that Donny Gerrard is one of Mavis's backing singers on her live shows these days.

Someone should fetch her over for a UK concert & get Donny to perform his biggies as well.

t's titled 'Northern Soul: Music, Drugs and Subcultural Identity'

And you claim to be an academic? You really are full of rubbish!. The funny thing is George from Derby got in touch with me after buying a copy of the book - when it could be bought for a reasonable prise (£21) - to let me know how much he loved it because it captured his experience of the scene. Obviously that isn't going to be your experience, probably less gay, but he seemed to handle the language a bit better than you... a self-claimed academic. George's quote when I asked how he got on with the academic language says a lot about you... 'if a hairy arsed builder like me can understand it...' Enough said. I know exactly why you don't like the book: it is not about the records/music... you object to it on principle. You should be more honest about it. Oh, and no pictures... you simple person... ahhh. Tell you what, when we meet you can pick out some pictures for me.
