Un Rest Festival Manchester

I am not imagining this and pray to god I ain't just seen what I think I've just seen on a TV programme on BBC1 called the globe.  

At the Un Rest festival in Manchester there is a thing to do with dance and you would never guess what's involved and I don't think anyone will believe me. No I have not lost my mind no my meds ain't that strong and yes I'm about as normal as I've ever been in my life.

 

anyway there will be a dance off between northern Soul Dancers and yes I did see and hear it right I promise this ain't no wind up....

something to do with dance and expression and comparisons but couldn't remember everything that was said I was was trying to pick my jaw off the floor before I tripped over it  :lol:

 

someone please put me out of my state of hopefully derision and tell me I am wrong and need help  :dash2:

 

off to bed I think me meds are playing tricks on me  :unsure:

Not the only one Mike.  Sounds like some arty farty types cashing in on the scene.  It's open season on anything related to Northern Soul at the moment,

I think it may be the arts world climbing a long way up its own backside and trying to take "Northern Soul" with it. Expect adverts for people to demonstrate their floor work.

Wonder if they will ask the Northern Soul world dance champions to represent the Northern soul team or will a Matt from the One Show be team captain with all the rest of the circus cast in tow  :lol:

In the 1980's I Dj'ed at a soul night at pub called the Fountain on a Tuesday night. This was also the night the local Morris Dancers held their practice meetings on the carpark. I was eventually asked to turn the music down as it was put them off their steps. LOL

It's a little known fact that their is a 150 current practicing troops of Morris Dancers in the United States Of America alone I bet the Red Indians are well impressed.

With that little pearl of Knowledge I'll leave you all to it.

We all know how television often portrays them in a none weird, none eccentric light don't we?

 

I bet Morris Dancer forums spit blood at the way mainstream media routinely portrays them.

Nice to know England has contributed something back to the Americans re; original music.  We can call it quits then. 

 

Hows it work when they need new tunes?  'Shelf digging' in the Cotswolds? (the un-earthing of rare medieval sheet music from antique book shops).

I saw the same this morning when I was at the Gym old clips of the Casino - as the sound wasn't on the TV's I was reading text but thought id got it wrong I was writing a new listing to place it on here to see if it was true and left it because I thought I must of got it wrong  and looked to see if I could find anything on the net now I think -kin BBC typically taking the piss why bother seems everyone under the sun now want a piece of it

It has just been previewed on NW Tonight. It was as expected. Though I was surprised to hear that all us "Northern Soul Fans" are keen to drag NS into the digital age.  :g:

Workshop throughout April ? Wtf is all that about ??

Of a similar ilk (Wigan Young Souls Related), a colleague sent me this video of Jagger and Bowie.

Apparently its an advert for Brutus, however, I think it's ill-advised and ill-considered and the art-direction is poor. in fact it looks like a bad degree show video...I just don't understand the concept.

 

In this instance,  I'd rather be a stick shaking, clog clicking Morris dancer. 

 

 

 

Additionally, I was going to use Victoria Baths for the Manchester European Soul Weekender this year, but they said they'd already taken a booking for a big soul allnighter around the same time.
I was glad to see it had morris dancers when I saw the flyer :)

The young girl with the Afro Lauren was interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester this morning and was in the feature on BBC 1 NW news last night

Her Dad Mick is well known having started on the scene in the 70s

It looks like the video was taken at a Allnighter WYS run at Bolton which was very succesfull

I know a lot of them wear Brutus shirts no doubt as a result of the video ad campaign

 

I havn't a clue what the workshops are about

The older Guy Roy Stewart has been around a long time and is always out n about

There was once a blind institute trip to Blackpool.

Anyway half way there the coach driver stop for a sandwich and a cup of tea.

He says to the trip organiser "what are they  gonna do", organiser says "have

a game of football in the car park"

"But they're all blind" says the driver quizzically.

Organiser explains "we have a ball with a bell in It".

"Oh" says the driver.

Ten minutes later a guy rushes into the café in a panic and finds the driver,

he tells the driver "he must get rid of those people out there".

"Why" says the driver.

"They've just kicked seven colours of shit out a morris dancer" says the guy.

I quite liked it, up to the point where we can see the dancing. I just don't like this hand movement tea pot stuff that disappeared for a few decades and now seems to be back with the emergence of the Nostalgia scene.

Without doing a textual analysis of its filmic qualities which I guess you're better positioned to than me, I can see its role within a marketing campaign. My view is that it's looking to build an authenticity of brand for Brutus based on its past history ( adidas originals is good at this) and (it hopes) a remerging adoption by young 'niche' target audience, possibly as early adopters.

By attaching the brand to story that conveys confidence, a scene off the beaten track, young good looking people not giving a hoot for the conventions of the day can help to reinforce or create some powerful brand attributes. If this message is integrated with other opportunities such as Elaine's film and a timed campaign I can see it contributing to the brands position in the market.
