That'd be me at Tracky with Kurt Harris,

Now then lads, if my memory serves me right, was it not Kitch and Dean Anderson that first found this on a record hunt in the States during the "new" Tracky day's.... late 80's? Don't rip me to shreds if i'm wrong Chalky, after all, it was

I think they found a couple of copies late 80s (I think I had my copy from Dean or Kitch) but that was after it was well known as a 100 Club spin. I'll ask Dean tomorrow

Dean gave me a sales cassette with this on at the time, i'm sure he said they found half a dozen. Didn't know it was found before then.... thanks anyway

Don´t think it was played at Stafford Chalky, got mine just as it was uncovered(Carl Fortnum told me the artist at the all nighter at Norwich university date anyone?) got it straight away from the states four dollars! and it was still pretty exclusive then probably 87/88 (i´m shit with dates) but definately before Bretby had begun,i know for sure the first time i played it out was at Rudzi´s Holy Cross soul night(funnily enough that night i played my Escorts cover up as well to nil response :g: better known as the Hyperions nowadays   )

Steve

ps,and shortly after had a Butch sales/unknowns tape with it on(Kurt Harris) also on the tape Clara Hardy,Sandra King,Flash McKinney off the top of my head without digging it out

I've never found any evidence other than someone's word that it was played and by Keith, was also told Ady Pountain played it but he flatly denied this saying he couldn't stand the record

It was either covered up or just uncovered when I got my copy, be about same time as you I think.

I also remember you playing the Escors then lending it to Rob to never see it again

I remember that night, Ozzie getting a slap/into a scuffle over an incident with talc . I'd had my Kurt Harris a while by then.

did my first allnighter in 88 so am confidence it was 89(cant be before 88),as for kurt harris I've always known it as kurt harris,so must of been uncovered 1988/9.

didn't know Ozzie personally.but anyone doing nighters regularly knew who he was(scary corner people they were described earlier in this thread)as a 17year old he was someone I avoided, although i'm sure he was ok if you dared to join him in the corner

Ozzie was a cracking lad, just loved to play up a bit and could come across as a maniac :) the scenes not been the same for me since he passed away. He could be a comic genius when on form.

Loved it in that corner (for an hour or so then when my head was a shed after an Ozzie, Mol, Chris Ashby, Woody (Loughborough) et al onslaught I'd leg it

Well remembered steve. Sales tape went down to ady C and he got it from me. Actually ady said that he wanted it for his collection and then played it as a c/u later.  I was amazed to see it go big (actually massive)  Not my cup of tea though. Good to see ady turn it into a monster.

Me and Little Annie are hosting a fundraiser all dayer on the 24th May in Wigan with a line up of the big boys behind the decks. The same boys who did the business in the 8t's and 9t's.. It's going to be a packer and just £5 on the door

It's a bit like someone coming onto the scene in the 8ts and hearing for the first time, tony clarke's landslide and then saying a decade or so later, that it reminded him of the 8ts.  Most records that have been heard on the scene over the last 50 years have a chronological occasion when they were first played/become popular and the people at those 'newies events' bear whitness to those new discoveries and carry that information with them for future reference.

Which is fine if you were around right at the very beginning , have attended every venue since and were there when every record was played out for the first time ... that would be very few people methinks ...  :glare:

Someone new to the scene will always be playing catch-up as far as sounds are concerned , to them everything they hear will be a "newie" and by association will remind them of that era/venue where they first heard it ....

When I started attending niters in the late 70's early 80's I was blissfully unaware of the ancient days of the Twisted Wheel , Torch , Casino etc. and what was played where and by whom , still am in all honesty ...  :)

I'm just one of those simple punters that likes what he likes and is more interested in the 'sounds' than the minutiae of the name of the singer's/songwriter's/producer's dog's favorite toy or what car the bass player drove to the studio in , yes these details mean everything to the Soul-Stasi but luckily we're not all inflicted ...  :wicked:

I can pretty much remember where I bought every 45 in my collection and from whom I bought it , as well as being able to picture myself dancing to them , despite them being some 40 years "past their sell by date" ...  :D

Glad I headed for the dancefloor all those years ago and not into the dark mysterious corners that required passwords to enter and entailed sitting down all night involved in an amphet-induced 100mph conversation about matrix numbers ...  :sleep3:

After browsing this topic, it would seem that some of those lists of 9ts tunes are chronologically inacurate eg.bobby hutton-come see, delettes, keni lewis-whats her name, eddie wilson-toast, majorie black-sue, ravennettes, jimmy frazier, marvin gaye-love starved, troy dodds, tommy frontera, rhonda davis, joseph moore, timmie williams, terry callier, fortson & scott, blue jays, etc. (i didn't bother to include any records listed from the strange ramblings of sooty)

I know the original thread stated 'records that reminded him of the 9ts' But personally, these records don't remind me of the 9ts; they remind me of the time when they were first played, either in the 7ts or 8ts. It's a bit like someone coming onto the scene in the 8ts and hearing for the first time, tony clarke's landslide and then saying a decade or so later, that it reminded him of the 8ts. That could be said of most time periods throughout the scene. Some of the records that people view as Wigan sounds are in fact earlier Cats or Torch sounds. Some of the Stafford biggies were tail end of Wigan and so on.The point is that at certain times reactivated records become popular and become representative of the later time slot. Its not always about when, where, and who first played the tracks its about your memory assigning the records to a venue,DJ,or time .Martyns podcast is the essence of the 90s to me and even Sootys ramblings include tracks that i remember getting hammered mid 90s

But,because the "scene" has been going on best part of 50 years,it does matter where and when records were played.A timeline is needed because there's so much water under the bridge.

There's always going to be records you associate with a time and place, but to call those who do take an interest and where there at the time "Soul Stasi" is out of order.

I don't think you're just a simple punter who likes what he likes - how can that be, if you've a photographic memory of tunes purchased and from whom.?

Surely you'd be better joining the Soul Stasi with a memory like that .? :)

I agree & your points in the main are correct,I know a lot of the tunes in my Podcast aren't originally from the 90t's & I tried to make the point that it was my personal look of the 90t's.At no stage did I try to say it was a definitive look at the decade. All the records on the Podcast are from my collection so limited my choice of what made the playlist.Missed most of the 80t's(last nighter been 83) so when I returned I heard all these great tunes that blew me away & reignited my love for the music,so I was playing catch up but I was still hearing them tunes been played in the 90t's hence they belong in my mind as 90t's tunes

Bet you'll be looking forward to Volume 2........out in all good store for Christmas

Cheers

As an overall reference it matters to a degree but every individual has their own point of reference.

I thought they took speed for that get up and go, not to sit down all night :g:

True enough , but there were an awful lot of folk off their nuts sitting around talking complete bo****ks about records as I recall ...  :D

Perhaps some kindly old 'soul' would knock up for us 'uneducated types' a definitive list of every tune played out since about 1963 , where it was played first , who discovered and played it , what label it must be played on ... blah , blah , blah ...  :wicked:

Remember the last record of a Ritz/Manchester Allnighter mid 90s. The frontdoors opened by the bouncers and the light went in through all the cigarette smoke. `Deon Jacksons - Some day the sun will shine` out of the speakers and a nearly full dancefloor at 8 in the morning. THAT was a good goose pimples moment.

Supremes - Stormy, Liz Verdi - Think it over and be sure ...lots you never hear nowadays.

Hi Martyn...X Super topic and many memory's brought back mate....thanx for that!x As you have re-iterated....the core interest was to recall tunes played in the 90's...which I gladly shared tunes I...me..played from '93-2000. As a DJ and in tune with the people then I focused on not doubling up in a night....steering away from the obvious where possible.....and drawing on my active schedule each weekend for 9 years and absorbing knowledge gathered from reliable sources attending the 'happening' places to have had a good idea of what was 'in'...out'....or brand spanking!!x I do not lay claim to discovering owt or being the first. I do recall being the only one Nationally to spin many of the tunes I listed during the period designated....up North and down sarf....at the major Nighter venues including my own St Ives and the Maltings. I have videos of some of those nights which i've reviewed....and yup.....I played 5 off me list that nobody else played all night! around 1000 folk there and that's it!! What constitutes me being the only 1 or not to spin a tune at a nighter....if i wos????? I made me own crowd up so I din;t pi** off anyone elses....wot more could I do to appease????!!!x  Not many during the 90's were doing ALL around the UK....I WAS.

It puts a different perspective on life too! What was massive/popular say at the 100 Club.....may have bombed at Blackburn. I was at both to know. I could get away with tunes at Winsford that I couldn't at Blackburn! Bretby and again slightly different emphasis on genre too. Cottons was just a rave and anything went.....!! That';s some of my recollections. The Country does have it's 'divides'. My 'assessment' is based on trawling through the Country throughout the 90's.....to be able to help with your request for tunes 'happening' still...or wotever......which co-incides with my time as a National DJ. I hope it helps mate!x

Here's one that I played Nationwide too....and again it wasn't played prolifically on the nighter scene that I heard or could name a DJ that did spin it as part of his 'known' set. I can name all the DJ's who came and asked wtf the night I spun it at various venues. £6 quite proud of it I was!!x

Hope you don't mind me rambling on Martyn.....but some of us were there...some comment on who was there....and some were there.....but weren't......not in the way I wos. Punters were all happy.....job done!x

...I look forward to your compilation mate!!x

Chalky....X I spot that your collecting flyers from the 90's. I have over 300 from all the venues I  DJ'd at Nationwide over them 7 HAPPY years. Amazingly I can recall each night as i look at them. Each DJ featuring and yup.....what I was spinning and what I can say I weren't and leaving it up to those who had em!!! Real happy days as said. It is a shame all didn;t have mine and dare I say 'our' experience during those exciting times. For me....those 'details' do get trifling.....and is all put to rest when last year after 10 years.....a hard core Soulie who was everywhere I was during the 90's.....kindly...firmly and looked straight into my eyes and said....."It's nice to hear your music again Sooty!" When just 1 'hard core' sez that.....and I have to respect her opinion.....then u know wot.......the rest don;t count!!x I will gladly sort the flyers out for you Chalky,.X

Mrs Smith...Rob;s Mam....she used to dance with me in the 90's....I insisted!!x Dunno wot went on in them daaaark and diiiinggggy corners.......honest....too busy entertaining and enjoying meself....so soz if I don;t take you all too seriously in this topic........!x

mrssmith.jpg

EDIT....just spotted this as I had posted the above...and it helps clarify things superbly!x

On a Northern FB site...from Liz...."thanks Sooty really enjoyed it havent heard it b4 so i played it twice cheersr calling hope to hear more class 2morro nytnyt sleep ttight "

Now....listen to Ian Levine....Chris King and Richard Searling on the Tog doc...their words....they all say in unison there was a NEW SURGE of interest through the 90's. There was...I and many I know were part of it. I also know there were HUNDREDS who came back for the first time since their Wigan/Fleet/Stafford days. Many's kids had become teenagers left Man n Dad with nowt to do....they came to Soul nights. Sean Chapman was part of that renewing new wave. He came to our doo's......he was inspired and went on to become the legend that he is. He was just an excited punter coming back when we met in ;93ish and he had only heard me spin certain tunes i;ve listed back then as he hadn't been 'active' for years!!

So...many folk who came to my doo's....knew nowt of the Naitonal scene or perhaps what had gone in the previous 20 years!!! I know they were there....I met them and knew their story's! All around the UK there were lots of new folk....who knew nowt!!! They will say Hopes and dreams is a 'Sooty' tune....it;s been said of late in FB forums....b'cos that;'s their knowledge and association! Just a fact!!!x So....we all have an 'era'....mine was with the mainly new folk piling in around the Nation....and yes....I creamed the best of 30 years of what had gone before......put it together well....entertained...and had it away!!! Wot's the problem with seeing it as just that....cos that is what it was...for me...and many out there!!!x

Back to Liz's comment. A Northern Soul/Motown site. I put an obvious and old hat tune in there to thank someone. This person had never heard it in their life....!!! Sooooo....it'll be a Sooty tune for her and others who are saying the same!!!! Not all are into the detail....just for 'the moment'. Amazing I can have it away as 'theeee man' for this........but it happens.....!x

...and I do thank you all for your luuuurve......honest!!x

i think sooty has a fair point its like everything on the scene its experienced through their eyes, some just dance all night ,some stand in record bars talking vinyl. each to there own but this is why the movie wasn't everybody's cup of tea as it wasn't how they saw it. i like sooty own incite into how he remembers the 90s. especially the tunes that were only certain regions fair play to him a much respected member of the northern scene. i always enjoyed his spots at events he DJ

hi steve

glad its not just me!

Sooty was obviously in his own little bubble and oblivious to what was happening either elsewhere or around him.  He hasn't listed one "newie".  All had been or were being played by others.  Many had been dropped by nighter DJ's, well the more forward thinking.  He obviously has a different recollection of the scene than others and he seems to think there was only him out and about every week?

yes i'm beginning to think the same - sooty sure is a "big hit for himself"

SOOTY, you quote -

I do recall being the only one Nationally to spin many of the tunes I listed during the period designated....up North and down sarf....at the major Nighter venues including my own St Ives and the Maltings.what with him DJ'ing Nationally!!!

firstly, reference this quote - i doubt it, and secondly as Chalky quotes, most had probably dropped them by that time!

WTF - I've been on the scene a few years and NEVER heard ANYONE use such a stupid phrase as being a NATIONAL DJ

and yes Chalky, not one "newie" listed

Sooty, by "bigging yourself up" like this, you sure are leaving yourself open to negative feedback!!!
