Sorting through the collection I just got to wondering how other people collect. I and others I've known over the years have had little pet projects when collecting. Some go for Thelma or Golden World others Carnival or Dore.

My question is which labels are included in your pet projects?

Come on put on your anoracks.

one derful, m-pac marvoulos

for me

Can tell you one label I wish I hadn't started collecting, & that's Cenco ! There's so many numbers on the label, & two thirds of them are total dross ! I started off thinking it was just a mid 60's label, then soon realised it went way back to the late 50's  Started out as a blues label.

Oh well, only a few more numbers to go, may as well see it through now

Great idea for a thread by the way Kev, should be interesting :D

Personally i used to love collecting the RCA, DECCA, CORAL black issues look lovely in sets :D

Labels do look fantastic when you put them together.

I'm on the Carnival at the moment and w/d Motown.

Also wondering which artists get collected the most. Once had a collection of about 4T Ted taylor records that eventually went to a collector from Belgium.

Never managed to finish a discography yet.

I'd love a complete Palmer one.

Good luck with those last few.

Wonder what makes you stick to a label. For me it's usually finding a few things on it then searching for more. I tend to rein in my obsetion when I hit a few bum ones and redirect my attention elsewhere. Also amount of cash flow is a consideration.

Also wondering if anyone has a complete collection/discogrophy for Fortune records out of Detroit.

Could make a good story if itn hasn't been done yet.

If everything was listed in JM's guide you'd need a wheelbarra to move the thing about.

I've a few items I'm sure he says were never issued.????

Good luck in tracking those ellusive ones down.

I am a bit of a label nut - I think it comes from being a colleptomaniac.

Off the top of me head that I have done - Wand, Loma, Glades, Alston, Minit, Golden World, ric Tic, Revilot, Motown etc, Beverly Glen, Arctic, MPac, Onederful, Bunky, Barry, Top & Bottom, Phil La, Philly Groiove, Phil Intl, Salsoul, Stax (US and UK), Volt, westbound, MGM (SOM), Goldwax, Invictus, Hot Wax, Janus, KoKo, Magic Touch, Venture, O'Keh, Red(d) Coach, Sound Stage 7, 77, Truth, Virtue, Innovation 2, Black gold, Vigor, Capsoul etc etc.....I could go on.

'a bit of a nut' doesn't come close there Steve-You still got all those or have you been tempted to sell off bits here and there?

Also which direction does your current obsession lie?

Still got them all - think I have one missing Arctic (Chains of love), a couple of missing Lomas, a few missing Wands etc, one missing Golden World, but got most of everything else. My collecting has slowed down a bit, but I have quite a few records whistling.gif

I feel a smidgeon of your pain.

I decided to try to find all the releases on Dee Gee out of Chicago, after Dave thorley getting me a copy of the sublime Valerie Lamar, Shame. (one of the greatest tunes played at Stafford).

There are only about 8 or 9 others, but most are truely awful. The numbering was haphazard to say the least, just to make finding info even more frustrating.

The Ray Pettis tracks are about the most listenable, but one which luckily I got for $7 and is on one site at over £100 is just too awful to inflict on a stylus you love.

THEN when I finally track down Ms Lamar, and she strikes up dialogue, she goes all distant on me, and wont return any communication.

I'm giving up.

I did used to have all the Romark tracks, but my Economic Downturn happened before the rest of the UK. :-(

I'm also a sucker for plain labels, especially yellow ones, like Ann Sexton. They look so perdie in boxes.

Hi Mikey,

You got any of the odd Romark's left, there are a few I need to hear for a comp. You owe me for LCFC last Sat!

Cheers

Ady

Sorry Ady. Long gone.

I did consider trying to get them again, but couldnt.

Eddie Edmondson might have them all now?? I think he said the 70s version of Ty Karim he bought from me completed the set? Dont quote me though.

British Stateside and 500/600 series Tamla Motown

The most easiest label to collect is the Tri-Sound label out of Detroit..........

I remember as a lad seeing Nev Wherry's UK demos at the KGB (Like hundreds of them) and thinking WOW.

Also Arthur Fenn used to have all the RCA demos on show at CWG and most were getting played at the time.

Never knew how they could afford em really.

If I was to collect again, I suppose having every Motown related single would be the ultimate to aim for.

Ed

Never gone out of my way to actually collect a certain label but I have about 25 records on the Carnival label, bought every one of them cos I thought they were good in their own right so it shows IMHO the depth in quality on the label, the Manhattans and Lee Williams and Cymbals stuff in particular are all absolute gems, Volt is another label where I find I have a lot of stuff on, Dramatics, Newcomers, Emotions and Mad Lads to name but a few to contribute great Soul music.

Kev

Hi Steve could it be this promo only tasty item on Golden World.
