Stef

I wonder if you can help me, I am really interested in Sunday's add on event, the one at Monaco Ballroom Hindley (in the venue that Bob Brierley has been running soul nights at for the last ten years)

I see that you advertise 'The first ever every Northern Soul Awards' at 8pm, at www.wigan-casino.co.uk

Can you give a little more detail about this part of the event.

What are the categories?

Who are the nominees?

Who nominated them?

How were they voted for?

Can I still vote?

Who's counting or counted the votes?

Who will be presenting The first ever Northern Soul Awards?

Sorry I can't make the Saturday event as I am at Lifeline Allnighter in Wolverhampton, but if you can let me know about the questions listed above I will paypal my £6 plus £1.50 booking fee straight away

Think I can guess who has won 'The Lifetime Achievement Award

The Monaco is my place of worshipping the hallowed sprung spruce dance floor and would be well worth visiting . I used to dance there before the Casino even got going

Hope to see you there

remember i am the the guy who wears the cream trilby

Hi guys. Greetings from sunny cornwall been doing lots of surfing to build up stamina for the dance comp. Casino dance champ how cool would that be. Great to have lots of opinions on this wonderful event but must stress unless your name is god or jesus they are only oipinions. Think russ gets an unfair shake on this site he is obviosly the godfather of northern in my humble opinion, he has got a cracking selection of northern records ,and wots wrong with not wearing them out, cds means the artists are receiving performance rights money which is great for them. Russ is hardly a has been , being invited to go on national tv says it all , I am a big fan of soul sam but his star record at st ives was the flasher so they all had there funny turns, we can forgive them for the od slip up. Hi Stef,

Having sold 1000 tickets doesn't mean that anybody has "won" in this debate. To use your words, the "S.S. Experts" will simply think that there are over 1000 deluded souls out there, that are all buying into to this charade, where as people like yourself will look at the numbers as justification that it's the right thing to do!!

This event would certainly not get me to part with any hard earned, that's for sure, but if that's your bag, then go & enjoy what you do. good.gif

I also think that if you read some of the posts from the " S.S. Experts" they are simply saying in their opinion that dancing in a shopping arcade is totally alien to them, as some have also said that a celebration of Wigan Casino is not the problem, its where it is being held & the bandwagon that drives it along, which you seem to be firmly behind .

You are of course entitled to your opinion, as is everyone on here. Maybe it wouldn't seem so crass if you posted on here on a more regular basis, rather than simply "appearing" on here to promote / justify certain events?

By all means, celebrate your soul past...........just don't forget that there is also a soul present & a soul future out there!! yes.gif

regards,

John Mc.

Debbie - Its a shame that people have to get slagged off for enjoying something, it may not be everybodys cup of tea, but people should beable to have a good night out with some friends & wear what they want without the slagging, for those of you who just cant help yourselves, ,

Its quite simple!, if you dont like it then dont go & leave other folk to do what they want

I was on TV 3 times in a month just acouple of months ago- Does that make me legendary.

Can you imagine that the ruins of the Mecca are turned into a toilet block that we all queue up have a little dance and pay money to list to Il and CC play Cds of bygone days- This is nothing but a money making exercise and nothing to do with the memories of a former great venue.

Stop deluding yourselves.

Stand in Station road- Close your eyes and listen to the classic played in your head. Thats about as close as you will ever get to the reality of it and not some stupid shopping cetnre.

Just had a thought - Miliions of people waiting to get into a shopping centre in America that was once called Graceland and people like Winstanly bullshitting the public that it really is still there:laugh:

If Winstanley really wanted to educate people about Wigan - Open up a museum to it in Wigan- That would be more credible cos he would have to put his hand in his pocket. Make it interactiveand all the old fans like me could contribute to it.

If Not for god sake retire Gracefully Russ!

Thing is Ernie to ' stand in Station Road ' you WOULD have to be in the shopping centre as the throufare is actually the old Station Road, Next store is roughly where the old cinema stood and the Carphone Wharehouse is just about where the entrance to the Casino was, give or take about 6 feet. The Casino Cafe with the glass wall thats filled with old memorabilia is built on the position of the dancefloor so it in itself is worth a visit even to just have a coffee. We travelled oover for the anniversary a couple of years ago when Dean Parrish appreared live and i have to say itwas brilliant, certainly made the hairs on my body stand up. I just put it to the back of my mind that it was in a shopping centre, after all it is hallowed ground is'nt it??

Like i say, if you are ever in Wigan just pop in, i travelled 12000 miles to see it and will be going there again when i'm back in the U.K. in 4 weeks time. I will miss the do this Saturday as i will be watching the Aussies smash the South Africans in the rugby at Subiaco Oval. Stay soulful mate. Tony T BONE. OZ. K.T.F.

Thing is Mark, Godfather or not and i'm not baiased in any way whatsoever he WAS the man respnsible for setting up the nighters at the Casino and we were all happy to dance to his tunes back then plus we stood in the freezing cold and rain waiting to get in and now there are people that bag the fact they can dance all night in total comfort.. Shopping Centre or not.

Just my opinion, seems a shame that the whole thing is now bagged the way it is. But hey that's life. Stay soulful, Tony T BONE. ex Peterborough now Perth, Western Australia.

And I loved the Casino as well it was such an important part of my life and Russ provided the sound track to my youth , but since 1975 or so he has been intent on trying to bring the scene to the masses almost bringing it to its knees as far as I,m concerned with his rose tinted nostalgia fests and his sing a long a Russ radio apearances .

Dont get me wrong the Casino should be celebrated as should all the great clubs of that era but not in a shopping centre .

Are you sure you don't mean I.L. when you say bringing it to the masses? Look i don't mean to get into any sort of overheated debate about this as there seems to be enough of that these day's but the fact is that ALL promoters are slightly guilty of getting ' OUR MUSIC and OUR SCENE ' to the masses by advertising their nights and getting non-soulies to pay to get in whether they enjoy it or not. We run a really successful monthly night here in Perth and get heaps of genuine people every month come along to enjoy the music and dance to the fabulous unknown sounds but i bet not one of them has ever heard of Russ Wistanley let alone Wigan Casino. Everything in perspective here as i think we are letting the emotions get in the way of what's really important. Which is..Northern Soul and what it stands for means so much to so many people but we ain't getting any younger so let's enjoy what we have while we can and stop worrying whether someone os making a quid or not. Remember no-one does anything for nothing nowaday's, just look at the record dealers!!!! This is only my opinion and in no way a slur against you or any of the other posters to the tread as i live 12000 miles away from all of it. I just want to enjoy the memories. Stay soulful. I did it 12 or 13 years ago and just stood there closed my eyes and thought of one of my favourite tunes and it was a sentimetal feeling - I then went into the centre of town - Had ameat & potato pie and a custard tart with a cup of tea and that bwas it for me- end of reminiscing and move on.

Most people go back to places and say- That shop there used to be a cafe we all hanged out at when we were young but we dont organise a bloody reunion for it no matter how many times we enjoyed the experience.

I just think its all false!

Come on people get real its the year 2009 not 1979

As I said why doesnt he open a musuem in Wigan that people could visit to reminisce. Why doesnt he because it takes money and a considerable time to develop. This night in a shopping mall is purely about making monery IMO.

IF he cared about the music as much as is being said here then I would rekindle my faith if he puts all the profit to a local drug dependency centre etc- Whats the chance of that! NIL

I can't quite get my head round this topic. You're all criticising someone for making some money. Why? What f*cking difference does it make to any of you if people want to go to a shopping mall to remember Wigan?

I just think its tacky - Kiss me quick hats and all that -

Have card board cut outs of The late manager, doorman the lady behind the counter taking your money- dont worry if it offends anyone in whatever you do as long as you make a buck- Is that what you are implying Pete? because I dont agree with it and thats my opinion.

Sounds like Wigan goes Disneyland!

I fully agree with you Pete. What most people don't know is that Russ has tried to get some sort of credit for Wigan as the epicentre of the Soul scene back in the 70's. Trouble is it's taken till now, some 38 years later for Wigan to realise just how important it all was. We went to the Wigan Pier tourist shop a couple of years ago while on holiday from Australia and i asked the question to the manager why there was no evidence of the Casino, not even a plaque. He said it was something that happened a long time ago and no-one was really bothered. I explained the importance of the Casino to thousands of young kids back in the 70's and he just shrugged his shoulders. I feel Russ may have just given up trying as he clearly got shafted, what with the unneccesary closure in 81. Anyway i for one enjoyed my time there and the time at the Grand Arcade. I went with an open mind, not vengeful feelings for someone who is at least trying his best. I mean he can't do it all for nothing can he ? Nice to see your input mate. ATB Tony T BONE. OZ. K.T.F.

Neither because I'm not f*cking mental

however - whats wrong with it being tacky, who are you trying to protect here, or is it just the memory of the place that you think shouldn't become tainted by this kind of celebration?

WHO CARES? Who cares if they want to have a dance in a shopping mall, it's not hurting me, I don't find it offensive, a bit weird maybe but not enough to critisize it and all the people who run it and attend it.

Life is too short.

i for one am not 'slagging' people off for enjoying themselves, if there is any 'slagging' off by me it would be aimed at those who are deluded enough to put on an event in a shopping centre thinking it resembles the casino in any way shape or form other than it's 'footprint' and 'seeling' it as a CASINO re-union/anniversary or whatever link they decide to try and forge.

i hope the 1,000 have a really great time but i wouldn't be seen dead at such an event. i also hope the thousands that line the Thames at the boat race have a good time but again, i wouldn't be seen anywhere near that event, to me that's as near to northern soul as say dancing in a shopping centre!

Not slagging anyone off but just a suggestion from me - Anyone going to this event ought to try going to an allnighter such as Burnley or Lifeline, then you might remember what the scene was all about in the days you are supposedly "remeniscing" over. Thats of course if you were there in the first place.

Don't think russ is milking anything with a 6000 quid setting up cost his door crew will cost more than most local events. Ace cafe in london held a reunion in the car park of the kwik fit garage it had been turned into 5000 odd turned up poss a few guys thought it was crap but majority thought it was brill. Its all about smiling and enjoying life
