Christmas Help For A Mate Of All Of Ours

Hi, I wasn't going to do this but sod it, why not:

many of you who get my lists, especially those of you in the Uk, will know John Porteus better known as Johnny Fingers. This guy is one of the nicest blokes on the Northern scene, has a phenomenal collection and is a top bloke and DJ. He helped me out in a time of real crisis and he'd never even met me before. Anyway from reading inbetween the lines, it looks like he may lose his house in january and is having to sell his beloved records so I just thought I would try and see if I could do anything about it, so, begging bowl in hand, I am going to ask anyone who knows John, if you can spare a fiver, a tenner or even more, could you donate it so's at least we can give him a helping hand?

I should have done this weeks ago but I didn't, but it's been playing on my mind ever since.

If you could spare anything for one of the nicest guys in the scene it would be wonderful, pay it into my paypal account pete.smith@freeuk.com and just mark it Fingers, I'll hand over every single penny and show everyone the receipts so don't worry about him not receiving it. (If you haven't got paypal you could always do it via card through me, I have facilities, you'll get a receipt :-))

I really apologise to anyone who finds this sort of thing offensive or in bad taste but it's the only way I can think of to help out a mate so just bin it if it's not applicable to you, but if you can help, it would be a wonderful gesture for Christmas.

That's a fantastic response Pete!

But if you're reading this for the first time, don't think that all is OK now - I don't know the guy but by all accounts Fingers has had the bailiffs around and loses his house on 4th Jan.

fingers gave my 18 year old daughter a copy of willie tee one way street cos its her fav northern soul tune at the rugby allnighter,and id only know him 10 mins myselfthumbup.gif sent a donation over pete ,good on you mate

Similar story to Harry and Mace....

Couple of years ago Johnny was djing and played a record I hadn't heard before. When I asked him about it afterwards he told me it was The Hi Tensions - So Far Away.

Before he left he gave me the record.

This was the first time I'd met him and I was deeply touched by his generosity, so it does my heart good to see such a response for one of life's good guys..

I sent him money for the reverse reason, as he was kind enough to tell everyone what my Superlatives C/U wasrolleyes.gif , love him to bits and I hope all our efforts go some of the way to helping.

That's a great story and it's obviously typical of the man and it's why I wanted to do this, and I don't know where he is today but Simsy suggested doing it weeks ago so credit to him too, I'll post a new total up soon, thanks guys and thanks everyone

Johnny is one of the great guys on the scene. Have heard many stories about him going out of his way to help others. He would even personally deliver records if you lived local(ish) that you had brought from him.

It was also a pleasure to have him as our guest DJ a couple of months ago at 'The City'.

81 different people from Soul Source and Planet Records mailing list have now contributed. 81!!!! I reckon we'll do £2000 by the end of this.

Pete, There are some superb people on this site, who disclaim credit for their thoughtfulness and sincerity, for which this world would be a much better place if multiplied! Credit to you for recognising John's plight, whom I hold in very high regard and without realising the seriousness of his personal situation to such degree! I hope that your kind request has sufficient effect and has the desired outcome, so have replied accordingly....Best wishes wilxy

No I didn't really think he would be but I was worried about going behind his back and doing sommat like this but what the heck, 80 odd people contributing, some from Europe as well, he should read this and know NEVER to give up on anything cos there's people here who care and want to help.
