Russ Winstanley

Recommended Posts

Sorry to harp on about this fool. BUT, this is his FB profile and at the very end contains a BIG, BIG lie! I have, on several occasions asked him to change it and stop trying to mislead people.

Russ Winstanley WAS NOT the the music consultant on the highly successful play 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan', which was by Urban Expansions limited (2003 - 2005) and commisioned by that company. That was myself, Adey Croasdell and Guy Hennigan (second tour).

Russ was music consultant on 'the sham production at Bolton Octagon called 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan LIVE'. A cut up and hacked to death version of the original script aimed at trying to get in the West End!

The first was highly successful and contained ALL original music, the second (Russ's LIVE version) was nothing to do with the successful play and had a white do wop band (flying Picketts) playing the music live. Thats the great musical advice Russ gave them " get a white group to sing Karaoke versions of the music we love".

At a time when films are out and Russ is pedaling his wares from stall to stall, i want to set this straight. He DELIBERATELY tries to attach himself to my production and he did NO consulting on it, hence its success.

Maybe Russ would like to comment on why he tries to confuse the two and says he was music consultant on 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan' rather than 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan LIVE', which were two very different plays! I know he reads these threads , as he always moans to the mods if anyone points out hes, allegedly, a fraud.

On 23rd September 1973 Russ had the idea for putting on and DJing at the famous Soul Allnighters at Wigan Casino. Over 4 million people passed through the venue which ran four nights per week until December 6th 1981. Both Wigan Casino and Russ Winstanley won many awards for best venue and best DJ. In 1997 Russ compiled Telstar Records northern soul album Soul Survivors which has become the biggest selling northern soul compilation ever grossing over £2m. In 1998 his book Wigan Casino Story joined the best sellers' list.

In 2008 Russ was featured in BBC TV's Soul Britannia and Dance Britannia and special Northern Soul features on BBC Radio 2 and 4. He has also toured with Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene and has also worked with Paul and Dean Parrish on the singles, 'Left Right and Centre' and 'It'll Never Be Over For Me'.

Russ is also music consultant to the highly successful Wigan Casino Play,' Once Upon A Time In Wigan' which ran in June at Bolton's Octagon Theatre and will be turned into a multi-million pound feature film in 2009.:(

Would be good to have Russ on the forum and then he could answer this and many other questions that cast him in a bad light...

Russ could also post me a reply to any questions brought up on here, i would post it up for sure....

If my name was attached to some of the comments thrown at Russ then i would want to try and redress the balance if possible...

Shame 'SOULBOY' the film have chosen him as their figure head of credibility! It can only tarnish their reputation.

All this fuss over on little word "live" :hatsoff2:

Paul I can understand were you are coming form on this but is it really worth the effort, most on SS know were the spot light shines brightly as far as 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan' is concerned.

Also we all know to well how Russ has milked the Casino cow over the years since it closed, but he's not the only one to make money out of the Casinos history.

On the udder hand! If anyone has a right to try and get more milk out of the Casino spent udders its Russ imo.

May not mean much to you mate, but it was me put 5 years work into the original play. THERE IS a world of difference between the 'Flying Picketts' Karaoke live mish mash at Bolton and the original Surely RUSS, if he wasn't DELIBERATELY trying to latch on to my successful production, would just alter his biog to reflect the truth, as requested?

The truth is, he was nowt to do with 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan'.

If i opened a venue and called it WIGAN CASINO, im sure there would be a few words on here.

The reason they didnt change the title for the Bolton production and merely added (for legal reasons) LIVE, is that they deliberalety wanted to mislead people. And Russ still tries to continue with the sham...its Udderly dispicable! Im taking the bull by the horns and putting him out to pasture!

You said it. So all he need do , is add it to his biog, as that is the name of the piece of crap he was musical director on. Why lie? Its not a mistake hes left it off, as i have pointed it out to him on several occassions. Well spotted though, perhaps send him a pm telling him its that easy to tell the TRUTH...just add the little word 'live'....thanks

I'll try and be costructive soulboy here about these "top DJs" from the 70s (and I didn't want to get into another Winstanley bashing thread), but some of em were absent from the soul scene for nigh on 20 years, then came back thinking that the scene hadn't changed and they would simply step back onto their dusty thrones, welcomed by the masses like returning Kings from the Crusades. Of course the scene had changed beyond all recognition to the scene they left back in the late 70s. Knowledge has improved at least twenty fold in the intervening years, so for my money the first thing they should have done (and in fairness some of them have done this) is sit back and listen to what has gone down, recognise the wealth of knowledge that has been developed, respect and work with the next generation of flag carriers, rather than simply trying to retake their thrones in Kingdom's that have fundamentally changed. Russ didn't do any of that. He always had "credibility issues" even in the halcyon days of the Casino, and isn't really part of today's scene at all. I know of two promotors on here who have booked him in recent years (one down here :hatsoff2:), and he runs his annual candle-lit pilgrimage up Station Road etc. but to all intents and purposes he's running his own Wigan Casino bandwagon. Meanwhile our beautiful music continues to be championed by thousands of others. thumbsup.gif

I would have thought Russ was breaching your copyright? Why not leave it to the lawyers? He obviously doesn't give a sh*t and nothing is getting done on here?

Good point Chalky. Surely these are legal issues aren't they? I wonder who actually owns the copyright and trademark in Wigan Casino?

As an example, I put out a Hacienda compilation a few years ago and the company who issued it had to make a deal with Peter Hook who I believe owns the copyright and trademark to the Hacienda name.

So has anyone ever registered or trade-marked the name 'Wigan Casino'? If no one has, then I would imagine it's wide open for anyone to use if they so wish.........

urban expansions can go for breach of copyright -copyright is Copyright is the set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. These rights can be licensed, transferred and/or assigned. Copyright lasts for a certain time period after which the work is said to enter the public domain. Copyright applies to a wide range of works that are substantive and fixed in a medium. Some jurisdictions also recognize "moral rights" of the creator of a work, such as the right to be credited for the work.

while since i went to law school etc [oh yes tis true sadly but i was saved lol]but very costly -not that punitive -and a total minefield when it comes to determining a legal rememdy -my opinon of this is the moral rights argument presuming it came from russ would be fickle to say the least ?? Also what has the wigan casino trademark etc got to do with this?surely an action would be urban v winstanley unless he has been shrewd which would foggy the waters even more!!

A Know what you mean to a certain degree about about the state of the country. BUT ! i think the rare soul scene maybe one of the last stands of togetherness or some kind of unity we have in this country and probably when someone well known tries and takes the p#ss they want to defend it without getting shafted by so called colleuges or freinds unlike work. The working class just sit back and take all the crap that's thrown their way.Its a attitude of f#k you Jak i'm OK, Would the FRENCH take all the shite that's been thrown our way..So RIght on Brother, Keep The Faith & We've Got Togethernes,We've Got Soul.

As someone who spent £27K in litigation over a name I created (a case I lost by the way) that's probably pretty good advice Baz. The setting the trousers alight option could potentially be a bit tricky though......

I would imagine that Gerry Marshall's estate more than likely own the own the intellectual copyright and trade mark in Wigan Casino since it was his company which financed the operation and paid for everything in the first place. A court of law would find in their favour without a doubt - courts almost invariably find in the favour of the people who originally financed things unless there was a specific contract stating otherwise. I tried to do a Studio 54 album a few years ago and the road was littered with legal problems so it just wasn't worth the headache.

I'd let sleeping dogs lie for a whole heap of reasons and they all cost money.......

Yeah but that's for 'Wigan Casino Northern Soul' isn't it Baz? And it's less than a year old too. Nothing for 'Wigan Casino' by itself that I can see........

ah the voice of reason Ian follow the link re the ipo office can only see wigan casino as a trademark registered once -and that was 09 -the registration invaraibly comes from companies because their have exempt liability legally from directors etc common sense and ofcourse its a lawyers dream and a punters nightmare -i dont think a moral case ie the right or wrong notion would come into this at all-it would rest on cash im afraid!!

Which one Baz? I take it you mean Sigma Sound?

No unfortunately. I did pass it a couple of times - once with Val Shively in the 70's but I didn't have the balls to walk in in '76. Wish I had. I did manage to get some great studio photos and interviews with Vince Montana when we did the Salsoul Orchestra anthology a few years back and I speak with a few of the original guys every now and then - for instance, I just licensed a track from Bobby Eli who is alive and well.

However, I have a sneaking suspicion that Moulton's sat on TONS of stuff from the era 'cos he collects it and then sits on it forever LOL I'm actually going to do a mini documentary with the great man in the next couple of weeks so I'm going to interview him in his apartment and get him to dig into all the stuff in his archives (of which there are 1000's of tapes) so that should be fun. Dealing with his bloody cats probably won't be as much fun however.........
