But i think in general we are discussing sounds that have made that transition into the Northern scene . My fave of them all at the mo has to be FRED WILLIAMS -TELL HER (SOLO) ,being spun out by Big George Mahoud (usually at my request:) ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmv8BRBjHts God i wish this record were'nt so hard to find ,like most things on the label . The vocal is very soulful but the pace of the 45 isn't condusive to dancefloor action. I'm making it sound like i don't think its fantastic though, which isn't true. I actually heard it 5 years ago from Callum in Australia and took me 2 years to secure one after that. As i said, I had a good 3 years out of it in the small rooms. Good to see it transfer into the big venues at last. I can hazzard a guess as to who put callum onto it. sam played it at soul essence this year not sure its a 45 I get too excited about. Its OK but certainly not amazing. carleen and the groovers would be more my cup of tea if we are on carolins funk but thats far less likely to be played at a northern night. Gotta agree with you and know this is more for the funkier stuff, but as we were talking about Wally Coco and Flourentine I thought I'd mention Clay Brown Some of the funkier stuff is good, some of it second rate and think at the end of the day if the 60's stuff was still being found much of the funkier edged stuff wouldn't get a look in. That's a valid point but at the end of the day this is the evolution of the scene and is a sound that a lot of people not only relate to but have actually embraced as a integral part of the scene today. So much tuuuuuuuuuuuuuunage still out there to find for a lot of us when you let your ears run free..... Get out there folks... Lots to offer at quite a few venues up and down this land.... Not a tune for all mate but when it came out the speakers in the little room at Radcliffe, i and many others were taken to another place... Don't have to be the future for all but i am sure there is room for it at some venues.... Many of these tunes featured aint gonna hit the spot for some.. No worry... The ammount of venues means we can all get a little of what we like... Be it.. The more tradional northern.... Or funk edged Ghetto thats as dirty as dirty can be .... 'I still love you' being another great example I gotta agree with most things said on this whole thread so far, brilliant music this is. Tempo variences, soul funk crossing over - debates about where it starts and ends, great stuff. A lot of the tunes mentioned thus far are quite big on the money stakes but the great thing about this stuff being relatively undiscovered (compared to say the out and out 60's soul Chalky elluded to earlier) is that you can pick a lot up cheap. Just a case of getting out there, digging and listening. Original post mentioned about a compilation CD; Thinking i'll be making one for my own ears at home based on this thread, awsome stuff!! 'Ladies Choice', 'Can you imagine that' , 'Cut your motor off' etc etc, it was the oldies revival scene that killed it off - Great to see it coming back in a lot of varying tempos - so long as it's soulful !
