Had a good look through the NS Top 500 & think it's time for a review, lot's of tracks on there never heard nowadays ( Sliced Tomatoes ) etc. & stranglely Jackie Wilson doesn't feature at all .

Just looking through the older Top 500 list and it includes tracks such as 'Strange Change' - Herd Ward as well as Thelma Lindsey and Lou Edwards, yet play any of these at your average Handbagger night and you'd have an empty floor and cries of 'Can't you play something we know?"...

 3 great tracks there, classic oldies to the vast majority, completely new to the young generations grasping the nettle and in no mans land with the handbaggers, the vast majority of whom want the clubby tunes they grew up with,never allowed theirselves to be subjected to change or progress and generally...from my viewpoint ( and it's only my view ) are the types who have NEVER ventured out of their own back yard and experienced what other venues have to offer. i think that the top 500 book addresses several generations,selecting tunes that have been popular at one time or another but with one thing in common...they have not been forgotten, they are memorable and that even includes the dire...nobody danced to them all of the time, but they're in the book because they caused people to dance. of course there's no reason NOT to have another book..perhaps the top 500 discoveries of the last 3 decades ( since wigan )?

Think the fact that Eddie Parker - I'm Gone is no 485 speaks volumes about this book (IMO).

Number 76 is interestiing tho'! I always thought The Tams 'Hey Girl Don't Bother Me' was an underground tune in the 60's and became 'pop' in the 70's?? In 1977...my mate Wayne put both sides on me tape.....and to be honest....i'd considered the B side 'Northern' and the Hey Girl the handbag side...!x  played the B in the 90's too and not many knew it even then!!x Tune methinks...and makes me top 501!!!x

I belong to an internet soul forum (KTF) & one of the lads ran an alternative top 200,it was complied over quite a few weeks & members voted on each record & he worked out there positions.It's not a massive forum so it's only a small section of soulies so wouldn't dream of calling it a definitive list but it certainly made for interesting reading & not many of the so called top 500 made it to the list.I was over joyed at the number 1........Walter Jackson-It's An Uphill Climb To The Bottom OKeh............proper record.

Though I was pretty heavily involved in the first couple of editions (as designer and contributing writer, with Pete providing a most of the old memberships etc), I always had issue with the definition of 'top 500' - to go purely on popularity across the WHOLE scene simply reintroduces the lowest common denominator factor of the pop charts. Where do you draw the line of 'northern soul scene'? If you include EVERY soul night in the country then you could justifiably start to expect to see something like The Four Tops' 'I'll Be There' because it would get heavily played at a low brow Motown do, though most wouldn't consider it 'Northern'.

 

Next comes the consideration of time frame - something like Astral Trip could justifiably claim a place for having been extremely big during the early-mid 80s - but someone who joined the scene post about 1988 wouldn't have a clue what it was and would be amazed it was popular.

 

Like many I think there is a whole slew of tracks that should've made it in, though at the time the book was groundbreaking (and is still probably by far the biggest selling book on the subject), being the first by a proper 'insider' to the scene and Kev deserves plaudits for taking on the task.

I can even disagree with myself on these lists. Recall contributing to a list on here a while ago, was it Your own Top 20 or somehting like that? I compiled a list and a few days later I'd completely changed my mind. I still put on an old tape or CD and think "Oh this would definitely be in my top 20". My Top 20 consists of around 200 records. However, that doesn't stop me criticising others and this list doesn't sit well with me, but as Pete S points out, I would be questioning myself if it did.

I rarely hear Let The Good Times Roll when at that kinda night but you do hear Girl Don't Make Me Wait.  Same for the invitations, I would have thought most of those below it are more popular and played more than Skiing In The Snow?

The topic title is Northern Soul Top 500 time for a review, I think the first book raised enough debate in the past and another would only do the same, time it was put to bed I think .

...and it has to incorporate the old adage that music is a preference John.....aaaaand invokes memories!x I went to me first gig after 13 years t'other week....an established 6th Anniversary doo....and heard Sliced Tomatoes.....and the floor rammed....!!!! Yep....'surprised' I was too....but....it brought back many memories for me whilst watching the dancers 'ave a go!!x It was a party...and it is party music....and yup....the 'majority' of 100 soulies in the room at the time had no problem hearing/dancing to it I witnessed....therefore....it would make their 500.....I assess!!!x It would make mine....but waaaaaaaay down the list....for nostalgic reasons!x

Whilst I'm at it can I claim NS Monopoly, collecting nighters around the board (100 Club = Mayfair, discuss yourself what's Old Kent Road), collecting a set to play with attendance fees according for landing on it. If only I could find an NS Tat stall at a weekender to sell this stuff!

I think people are missing the concept of the book. It wasn't supposed to be the best 500 records of all time, it was meant to be the most consistently popular over the years, which is why Eddie Parker is deservedly low in comparison with say Dobie Gray.

But it would seem many of these are popular from say 72 to 78 and then again whenever the returnees came back. Can't remember many of these being consistently popular at most of the nighters I went to in the 80s / early 90s. I certainly can't remember anyone playing Dobie Gray back then, it was considered dead by most people I know.

I suppose you had to going to nighters then to see what was popular during that period, that's where this supposedly top 500 has a massive gap and suggests a lack of experience of almost a couple of decades to me.

As I said, it's all time which spans 50 years, and in that 50 years Dobie Gray has always been and will always be more popular than Eddie Parker, it doesn't just get points from nighter plays, but from soul nights, youth clubs, pub do's, radio play, anything to suggest popularity.

If you take most of these records at face value and not by how many times you've ever heard them or if you're bored of them, this is some of the greatest music ever created on this planet, at least 200 of those are well worthy in their place of the best Northern 45's of all time.

Plus - Kev Roberts stuck his head on the block here and published a list based on his experiences.  How many of you lot have done it?  (Not aimed at you Byrney).

Nowt wrong with that but I don't see that as something those of us who haven't done similar should feel inferior about or should hesitate to question, just because we don't have the same drive to use our experience of the scene to derive an income.

Whereas you did your podcast out of altruistic motives, fair play.

I did it cos I thought it might make an interesting series of podcasts and get a bit of banter going 

Just remembered, I did mine using only records I'd actually got at the time, whether on original or pressing, no cd tracks, no tapes, just vinyl, so there were probably a load I'd have liked to use but couldn't for that reason.
