This year's Top 20 movers n shakers is up at Mixcloud.

Just wondering which jobbing jocks have been largely responsible for the current revival tracks or is it largely a collective input?

 

I appreciate most on here are at the sharp end of the scene, so just looking for the grass roots of who's got 'em going again.

For instance, Andy Dyson has championed Robert Thomas, Nige Brown with Herb Ward but what of the others?

Clearly the No.1 has had such an influence the value stands around 5k.

 

If it's you or a spinner you know of......holler!

I appreciate many of the popular tracks have been around forever, but who's hammering 'em now?

 

A totally subjective set of positions based on extensive feedback from popular venues and the inevitable Facebook  etc. And of course the recent film.

Few years ago i was DJ.in at a wedding with Phil Threfall in Wigan we where spinnin good oldies from the later years of Wigan Cas Moses Dillard Paris Ray Agee ect ect i heard severalof the Wigan young. Soulies slaggin us off sayin we where crap i laughed it off over the past few months ive seen a couple of the lads who are now dj.in themselves and many of the 45s we played that hour are on their wants lists..I think its great that these young dj.s are progressing their musical tastes with stuff away from the great classics that built the northern scene into what it is today its down to the older blokes like Ted Massey Carl n Maria Willingham Ginger Taylor Nige Brown ect ect who do the bigger venues and are.nt afraid to spin the more rarer tunes if soulies dont hear em they wont know em..

very poor should be smashed up some people have no taste ;)

40 plus years of music and it all boils down to 20 records that have been hammered for much of those 40 years, it is depressing.  Many of the 20 are the staple diet of the vast majority of oldies nigts up and down the country.  Two are three I can't for the life of me imagine why a DJ would feature them as one of his top spins.  Don't get me wrong some fabulous record s in the list as well but you can only listen to a top 20 for so many years before getting thoroughly bored.  Would you listen to the same top 20 or 40 in a night club for 40 years?

I sort of half of agree with Phil, in that the rise in popularity of Funk and R&B on the up front scene has diluted the quality of the records played

You may have assumed that these diversifications have taken place due to people running out of the traditional style, but that isn't the case. Many people like music, and find embracing different styles rewarding, others actually prefer soul OTHER than trad northern, like me.

If that traditional northern soul sound is all you want then there's a whole nostalgia scene for you, maybe it's time to accept it.

Not neccessarily. We cast out net far n wide. I don't think anyone can argue the 20 are current floor fillers. Name others that are on par with those in the popularity stakes?

 

I would imagine the likes of Frankie Beverley, Invitations, Major Lance, Tangeers, couple of Gene Chandler, Pookie Hudson, James Barnett and plenty of others are far more popular across the country than the likes of Johnathon Capree, Billy Davis, Soulutions

Andy plays Cressa Watson version, not many known copies.  I would also have thought Ravins, Henry C would also be popular for Andy.

 

i also realise it is just a guide and not everyone will agree just as I don't agree with some of the crap that is number 1 in the pop charts.

Don't be confused. Get out a bit more and see what the masses are dancing to.

It's merely a reflection of 20 movers n shakers during the last year at popular nights up and down the country. Nothing cast in stone.

We connected with more than 20 DJs plus we can see what's going on via requests etc.

Mixcloud contains our History of Northern Soul series spread over more than 60 episodes.

P.S  people may or may not like this....it,s not about a single tune (same for evonne fair) it,s about that tune in the context of the night

 

 

Also why play lists can not show whether a night is good or not.

Northen music is alive and well andin good health! Thank you Kevin  [The Number 1 promoter/ambassador on the scene]

It is what it is. We seem to live in a different Northern Soul scene in the south (some logic there?). I'm afraid I'm way out of touch with what gets played in the North in upfront and oldies venues, though I do ask about and send the occasional spy out. So to open a debate on the more progressive scene I'll start a thread and list a few that have been genuinely popular at the 100 Club.

This seems a bit confused.

To prefer a traditional NS sound does not mean a liking for oldies based on nostalgia.

I'd suggest that the 45s put out on Kent Select or Kent Anni in the main fit the trad description but I don't think they're aimed at the oldies end of the scene. Nor would the punters who travel down to London describe themselves as oldies fans. I think they go to hear something new and fresh which is of equal quality to what has gone before, unless the Lambeth Walk has come back into fashion !

IMO the next Mello Souls Butch turns up will be far more popular/talked about/in demand than any R&B or funk 45.

 

As for progress I heard that back at the Mecca in 76/77 and at tail-end of Wigan but the 45s kept turning up that kept the scene going for another 30 years.

this isn't aimed at anyone or any post in particular but it never ceases to amaze me about how people bang on about how 60S rnb and funky EDGED SOUL shouldn't be played and is only played as there is no northern left to discover but dance to what IMO is pretty shit soulful house at best..regarding bob Sinclair :huh:

The playlist thing...is different.....people used to say to me that place you go to is this,it,s that,it,s just an oldies night,it,s rubbish....and they don,t wanna go....well whatever,but f**k didn,t they used to badger the hell to get playlists.....which l found funny as they had no interest in going lol,,,,,put ya playlist up at your peril ..it gives no refection of a nights proceedings..and leaves said places open to ...slagging off and plagurism ....funny old scene!!

Me and my gin botttle are very happy in our solitary confinement, wallowing in progressive nostalgia about how good our days were, while moaning about people who wallow in nostalgic nostalgia. Long may we continue.

Well it isn't me that confused! I haven't a clue about northern soul, and certainly dont believe it to be dead as a progressive entity.

my post was in reponse to people on here who say that the dependence on either oldies on one hand, or associated sub-styles like r&b or funk on the other, is due to a deficit of newies in the traditional northern style.

I haven't a clue if there are proper northern newies to play or not, but was making the point that people dont necesarily play funk or r&b in a desperate attempt to play something new, as is often claimed, but because they really like funk & r&b, as much as northern style soul.

I know I do.

my ideal night simply plays great soul music, these nuances of genre that supposedly separate northern from funk from modern from northern from hard edged from r&b from popcorn...dont really mean anything to me.

While I'm sure most of the old school crowd are outraged at this concept of open minded soul appreciation, it is my bet that all the people lined up to inherit soul music and save it from nostalgic battle re-enactment oblivion on one hand or chin stroking trophy collecting middle aged blokey tedium on the other, feel pretty much the same as me.

remember, this genre of music we know as northern soul is so diverse as to be meaningless anyway, in a musical sense. It only exists as a construct of those who like it - like a collective version of individual taste.

there's no rule or theory anywhere that says it is a correct understanding of music, or even soul music. The original musicians wouldnt recognise it, neither do I.

Point being : evolution and progress seems to be discarding the old northern soul rules. Let it. If you like those rules, maybe the only place you're going to see them recognised is the oldies scene:

I was surprised Outsiders, Lee Andrews & the Hearts, Mel Williams and George Carrow didn't make it into the 20, they are not up and coming tunes but rather proper NS dancers that always seem to get the dance floor going at venues I attend.

Soulutions, Jonathon Capree and Tommy Navaro are 3 that I seldom hear....... but dont think I'm missing anything and when on the rare occassion that I do hear em they do nothing for the dance floor.

One major blessing is that the 'select 10 DJ's' didn't pick Nolan Porter's - "If I could only be sure" it pisses me off but always gets a full dance floor. Bah humbug!

As you say, it was around, everywhere - but nobody ever played it because it was too cheap and too common...until..

Pete it may well have been you or possibly Nige Brown.You both played blinding sets but i knew each record until Stanky came on and i sat down to listen to it for first the time.The record sounded great in that great venue and i started looking for my own copy and bagged one a few months after.It may turn a few noses up now a days but at first plays Stanky certainly made a big impact.

It was me then Patto, Nige will verify I put him on to it so I doubt he would have played it at T.S.O.P around that time

Des Parker and Johnny Beggs found a boxful of 'Stanky' on the stairs at Val Shivelys over 6 years ago, and it was selling for decent money back then....think they might have turned the box round so no-one else could read the title written on the box, and returned on several occasions to re-stock......perhaps Beggsy or Des sold one to Fred.... ;o)

The fact that this title has been ignored for the last 34 years at Val's speaks volumes for its quality. I've had the record for 20 years and listed the other side 'I've Tried' as the better track. Perhaps Fred had put it back in the sleeve the wrong way round, took it out, spun the B side and the rest is history...
