Agree. Very hard to track down too, I seem to remember.

One of my all time favourites so whomever it was i am eternally grateful.

It was a mecca sound.

I heard it from a sales tape around 77 along with Marvin Sease, The Heartstoppers, fifth amendment etc.

Bought the lot.......sold them all ten years later.

It was a 80s release I'm sure it was 1980 or 81 Richard Searling played it final year at Wigan Cas ?

1980

I think Searling did play it first at Wigan (?) but it was massive at Clifton Hall and there were quite a few copies about at that point (£4 a pop at the time)

1980 Ian - Catalogue No. ALSX-3751 

Graham Warr had 50 copies in his shop at the Oasis in brum, it was a massive seller for the other side and the Diskery in brum also had multiple copies for sale too,  not a rare record at all but one collectors like to keep. Still think "Baby I cried" is the best side though

I was thinking that is was never a hard record to find with 100s of copies about over the years, they were all over in the 80s. 

My copy was purchased at the casino  £4....(although I didn't buy it ... my mate bought it ,who I got it off later) course it was definitely played at WC.... both sides are fabulous to my ears.... I did put a thread up a few months ago regarding CJ.. someone kindly added the you tube clip I was referring to a group performing 'disco inferno with a Charles Johnson on lead.... to my ears it could be the same guy on the clip....

They are about but they ain't cheap. One of my top ten early 80's dancers. It was massive at Clifton Hall - I don't really associate any one DJ with it - it was a big spin for many.

It was with the Platters, it was on that BBC show about disc too

Love this track but always wondered why Charles didn’t go for it earlier in the song, that last 40 or so seconds just hints at another level, and it finishes....

Was  a Shrewsbury collective (Modern Soul pioneers) discovery. They took a copy to Wigan and Soul Sam played it as his last record of his spot before Pat Brady took over(this was its 1st play at a Northern allnigter). Ironically as there were only a few dancing Mr Brady faded it out before Charley lets go. Pep had copies in his shop at the time along with many other new releases . John Manship had it on his list too. Don"t remember Soul Bowl selling it as a new release.

I reckon theres a long 12" version out there somewhere, but its got my name on it so don"t get any ideas 😜

A Richard play as a new release. £1.75 at the time

One of the many records which I had stolen some years ago. 😡

I bought this record when it was released on the basis of a recommendation in the fanzine "Deeper Soul" (I think that  was it was called. I still have the magazine somewhere). Because the magazine was for Deep Soul fans, the recommendation was for the A Side "Baby I Cried". It only cost me about £1.75.

We must have been lucky in our neck of the woods, as new US releases at that time were £1.00 (from Pep), and CJ was one we all got.

Bought as a brand new release at the time from John Manship who at the time of getting in stock was  Listing the "A" Side as a deep soul Classic record, I bought a copy after a phone call to him and on receiving record played both side being blown away with NHALSG, Myself and J.C. (TOM Paddison On Here) both bought copies same day. Played it That weekend and it took off but it disappeared for sale as quick as it appeared and remained in demand since, A true soul masterpiece and  yes Manship was right, The "A" side damn good too.

Hi Peter, Yes You are correct, That is the same fellow, see him quite regular but i have to say with his long hair and beard now WHITE the youngsters in Scunthorpe Town Centre when  shopping with their parents call him Father Christmas, I kid you not. Always looked like a Hippie but he has a fabulous record collection, got a great memory of all things (back then) and could always be seen on stage at venues with his note book, always greeted people with "Bless You My Child" a loveable Character 🙂

How I wish there was an original 12" of it. Not the usual disco mix, but simply a complete recording including what happened after the ad-lib part of the 7" mix. As good as the song is, the last 30 odd seconds take it to a higher level. In my opinion.

Well one thing is for sure...after the Mecca closed in 79, there was at least one revival night in maybe 81 or 82 as a bus load from Donny including me went to it. 

Good chance NHALSG was played that night:)
