knowing how finicky "the scene" is, there doesnt seem to be that much support for new people, so you can probably just copy the 2009 list and paste it into the 2018 list.  BTW, I don't really have a desire to be a DJ, so I havent written this with any green eyes of envy.

Karl Heard getting a lot of rave revues,     so i'll ask  the (maybe daft) question.       whats happened to him?    he seems to have gone off the radar lately 

Karl was certainly at 'the top of his game', doesn't DJ much now though - He soon commanded a lot of respect from loads of people during his time.

I'm glad Mike said in 2018 in his opening post, so we don't get a list of DJs we all know / have been mentioned before.

There's lots of DJs doing it in 2018, and I for one would be interested if any really stand out for anyone, as in, are unique, have something about them that separates them from the rest. It doesn't necessarily mean a new or young DJ, just someone you think are at their peak (which can take years)

Saw Karl not so long ago, Grumpy Soul.  He was certainly top of his game then, he offered something different and it went down well on the dancefloor.  Today I can’t think of a Dj since then who has come along with something to offer that isn't already there.  The shouts I see and smoke blowing up someone’s arse is for those who play mainly oldies which lets be honest most of us can do. 

Of the youngsters, Calvin Lee Hughes and Sarah Jane do try to feature something not in yer top 500.  Butch of course is still top of the tree for many although he is rarely heard in this country outside the 100 Club.

Besides the evergreen and peerless Butch, this year the ones that have entertained me the most whilst maintaining their individuality - avoiding plagiarism and lazy trend-following are: Steve Plumb, Matt Fox and Andy Dyson.

There's a few young soulies doing a good job.

Eithan

Kenwood suite at Bury. All the DJ,s are very good and would grace the decks at any venue . 

Grumpy soul crew can mix it with the best of them. 

Ted Massey, Paul Shirley, Dick Kropp. Andy Dyson.  Chris  Anderton, Steve Plumb, Flanny. Baz Meleedy.  Are just a few plus the usual suspects .Butch,  Shifty.

Lots have been brilliant over the years, but 'top of their game' doesn't last forever for some, which isn't a dig, just natural - It's very hard to be at one's peak for years.

God knows how Butch does it, that takes some motivation!

Just back from the Dumfries Weekender . The djs across the differing rooms/styles certainly delivered . It’s about understanding what’s in front of you audience wise /their expectations and having /playing the appropriate records imo . 

Not forgetting the ever consistant guys arthur fenn and cliff steele

Hi Len . Suffice to say many of us marvelled at George Hunt’s (‘Stanley’ on here )  ‘hot box’ of mint , big ticket originals . Never seen such a collection all in one place , owned by one dj  and then hearing them played out at Dumfries in the Northern Allniter sounds Room . 

Suggest you might want to pm George if interested in specific records etc ...and/or persuade him to put his plays lists up on here .

Not getting out much lately, but Johnny Weston, Sean Haydon, Dave Abbott, needs a mention. As for Karl Heard, well don't think the likes of him will be seen for a while. The Burnley niters were transformed by him, you could feel a  shift in the scene, something you don't witness very often. I found a sales cd of his from about 2009, played it, and it's worthy of any set on the scene at the moment. The question is - Who's the next Karl Heard ?

Dean Carr (Soul on Wax/national) Great records OVO good knowledge of Northern Soul, Top 500 plus much newer sounds right up to current releases, builds a good atmosphere, infectious enthusiasm.

Mark Sargeant (Yate/Soul on Wax/Skeggy/National) OVO good breaker of new stuff, soulful funk/Yate sound and beyond.

Dave Hughes (He's still buzzing from double decking with Richard at Blackpool) OVO Always on it, doubtless coming to a venue near you!

Strictly personally, I always look forward to Jordan Wilson's sets, as well as Matt from Trowbridge and of course Ted Massey...

simon ingham is a quality dj always enjoy his sets and getting plenty of work. never had a bad night at grumpy phil,joan,carl etc. and ted massey always bang on .

john Weston lez norman the kitsons  all playing top of game and something different  glen Walton col Denham of raf club bishop Auckland as well

And two guys based in the East that deserve more widespread 'work' are Ely's Phil Rains and Norwich's Frank Webster , both have immaculate taste and are not afraid to avoid the run-of-the-mill and spin great lesser known , underplayed but classy tunes ... 

For ovo Mod/6ts RnB /popcorn  Mik Parry is unassailable imho . A trail blazer for these genres .
