I just don’t think we should give it any oxygen. The number of non NS people that think they know me ( but don’t really) that keep asking me what I think, if I’m going, the plays, the dancing, Bristol, etc, makes what was somewhat a private matter for me, become even more so.

I really cant understand why we are discussing an orchestra playing northern covers in front of a div audience, and we really should thank Maconie and the organisers for bring much needed attention to the northern scene. Because without them the whole circus would just die. Well i for one would say LET IT DIE, because none of this isnt what i signed up for in 1976 and have devoted a bulk of my life and money to. There are maybe 10% of nights worth going to and the rest are shit, full of divs which events like the orchestra are bringing in. So let it die, the records will continue and few nights will continue, but the scene as a whole is rubbish with nothing to link it to the people i knew and could relate to.

Birds of a feather stick together and find one another just like we do on this site, they are happy with a diluted version of what we term original full on NS, it lacks the atmosphere, the risky feel , the friendship, the chemicals, the effort that we crave for, To us and I mean the majority of the answers on this thread this would never ever be enough to replace anything like what we have experienced, Maybe it is enough for the people who touched on the Scene years ago who were never really into it except superficially  and a new crowd who are just dipping into what they term there idea of NS, Who knows they might get a bit ambitious one day and daring take some grade A speed and turn all the lights of at one of concerts and awake a depth of soul music they didn’t know was there LOL,  I doubt it of course, I’ve said it before and I will say it again there are more of them than us, and they are never going to change no matter what we do, For those who love the real thing carry on loving it and enjoying in the best way you can it’s your thing and nobody can ever take that joy and experience you have had with NS, let them go to their concerts it’s their thing, I know which I would rather do.

Loads of interesting comments above, mainly critical it must be said. Personally, I don’t see the Proms threatening the current scene or debasing the past as these events take place in a parallel universe. Yes, the Proms could result in more divs dropping into Soul Nights but I recall plenty of claims on Soul Source of the need for new blood; don’t forget that many of us were divs once upon a time when we stumbled into The Casino.

I suspect that some of the Cat’s oldtimers will enjoy the event in Wolverhamton whilst the old Wheelers will derive some satisfaction at the Manchester Prom. Sadly I’m travelling  and can’t make it to the London, Manchester or Sheffield events but would have gladly gone to any of them, distance no object.

maybe they are critical because it is not what the scene or even this site is really about.  Soul Source - Rare Northern Soul Music.  Topics like this and people like you continually watering it all down, the topic has been done to death with lengthy discussions but you feel the need to start another.  Maybe just maybe many of us are getting tired of it?  Many of us are tired of the mainstream commercialisation and reducing this once great scene down to div level. It is so far removed from the original ethos of the scene.  If people want to wear crass t-shirts and look tw*ts on tv be my guest but don’t keep ramming it down our throats, keep it in that parallel’ universe where we can’t see it.

I went to a 'local' charity event a few years ago to show willing so's to speak.

Aside from the cloud of Johnson's that  engulfed the room everytime "Sharon" and her mates waddled onto the floor , pints in hand , the clincher was the music stopping halfway through to allow a massive pizza delivery to be spread on a waiting table and a "buffet-stampede" to ensue ...

The heady mix of talc and pepperoni had me skedaddling in an instant  ...

Yummy, my kind of food but I still dream of chicken sandwiches served at the balcony cafe at The Casino. Maybe the scene needs to move up a class or two, take over Stringfellows nightclub for an evening of mid-tempo sounds served to gents wearing suits and lasses wearing cocktail dresses... drinks at £10 a time should deter the car-thieving-drug-taking-riff-raff. From someone who's been defending this charade of 2nd rate cover versions I find that last sentence rather amusing to say the least.
