Why don’t they/you just leave it alone, it isn’t meant for the proms, it is meant to be in an a club preferably underground.

I imagine the proms have celebrated all kinds of music from the Beatles to Abba so it was only a matter of time before Northern got the treatment.

As a one off no problem to me but now comes the payback the concerts, lps and merchandise and money for the promoters, who then add extra dates.

Sorry to see our great scene reduced to BBC radio 2 level.

Judging by its target audience that should read "Hospital Radio" level ....

I would have thought it's target audience would be such as us , wishful thinking certainly, but it is not targeted at Punks, be good if a poll could be organised on here to see how many members are going to one of the concerts.

Loads of interesting comments above, mainly critical it must be said. Personally, I don’t see the Proms threatening the current scene or debasing the past as these events take place in a parallel universe. Yes, the Proms could result in more divs dropping into Soul Nights but I recall plenty of claims on Soul Source of the need for new blood; don’t forget that many of us were divs once upon a time when we stumbled into The Casino.

I suspect that some of the Cat’s oldtimers will enjoy the event in Wolverhamton whilst the old Wheelers will derive some satisfaction at the Manchester Prom. Sadly I’m travelling  and can’t make it to the London, Manchester or Sheffield events but would have gladly gone to any of them, distance no object.

maybe they are critical because it is not what the scene or even this site is really about.  Soul Source - Rare Northern Soul Music.  Topics like this and people like you continually watering it all down, the topic has been done to death with lengthy discussions but you feel the need to start another.  Maybe just maybe many of us are getting tired of it?  Many of us are tired of the mainstream commercialisation and reducing this once great scene down to div level. It is so far removed from the original ethos of the scene.  If people want to wear crass t-shirts and look tw*ts on tv be my guest but don’t keep ramming it down our throats, keep it in that parallel’ universe where we can’t see it.

I know we are getting older and don’t get up to the antics we used to but we do like to try and keep it real and still stay away from the divs we went to nighters to get away from in the first place.

Spot on Chalky, it seems everyday Northern Soul is been exploited and used as a money tree to try to squeeze a few quid out of the di*ks you talk about.

Just come across a so call Northern event with the promotional blurb " free glass of fizz on entry and 2 course meal and dj till 12.30". That's as far away from what it was as I can imagine.

I went to a 'local' charity event a few years ago to show willing so's to speak.

Aside from the cloud of Johnson's that  engulfed the room everytime "Sharon" and her mates waddled onto the floor , pints in hand , the clincher was the music stopping halfway through to allow a massive pizza delivery to be spread on a waiting table and a "buffet-stampede" to ensue ...

The heady mix of talc and pepperoni had me skedaddling in an instant  ... :hypo:

As if you could get a 2 course meal and don’t forget the Black Forest Gateau down after a gram of the best, It just goes to show some of these promoters haven’t got a clue, LOL,

I'd only start to worry if they were offering smashed avocado on artisan toast with a bean curd dip.

Yummy, my kind of food but I still dream of chicken sandwiches served at the balcony cafe at The Casino. Maybe the scene needs to move up a class or two, take over Stringfellows nightclub for an evening of mid-tempo sounds served to gents wearing suits and lasses wearing cocktail dresses... drinks at £10 a time should deter the car-thieving-drug-taking-riff-raff. Think Manchester Ritz or Birmingham Locarno, plush decor, good sound system, plenty of wannabe DJ’s around, surely loadsamoney to be made. As long as the music remains quality, all the rest doesn’t matter.

From someone who's been defending this charade of 2nd rate cover versions I find that last sentence rather amusing to say the least.

I'll stick to lingering in dark corners with the "car-thieving-drug-taking-riff-raff" that I know and love thanks all the same.

But according to the latest info norvern died when Wigan closed in '81 , it never happened anywhere else before or after until Bristol revived it last year ...
