Everytime I go through the New Forest and see the sign for Rufus Stone - I think Soul singer - great cover up name

there actually was a southampton based soul covers band called rufus stone during the 80's, they backed up curtis mayfield when he played southampton top rank in 1985

No but it's a great record, both sides. Probably the best suggestion yet.

I think most people are talking venue spins. The ones I've mentioned is just stuff I found about last year and are probably not as widely known.

i would think venues Chalky, every record has a time and a place where it can be spun imo

Couple from me, both known about but not too much by the dance-floor,

Grier Borthers - Weeping Baby All the Time - Melody Disc, expect this to go bigger this year.

Quinn Golden - Habit Breaker - Esko. I know it's been known about off the LP but got a 45 of this last year as did one or two others so this might have it's day in the sun at some point.

Just tipping records that you think will start to get more venue spins over the next year isn't it? Lesser knowns/reactivations etc all fair game? The other thing to bear in mind Chalky is that although you've been a regular on the scene for many years without any extended time away from it there are a lot of people who took long breaks or only started out within the last 5-10 years........and I include myself in that second section. To me there are lots of things that I hear and think of as a newie or new to me only to be told it was massive everywhere in the early 80s or was a big **insert venue of choice** spin in 1979. But I wasn't around in that period so to me it's fresh.

Following on from that, two more that I've been playing to a great reaction recently and both of which seem to be classed as oldies and newies depending on who you ask. Think both will be heard a lot more in the coming year than in 2010:

steve Cato played this a lot a few years back, but going through a bit of a revival at the moment and rightfully so. Push it through on the pitch and it becomes an incredible haunting dancer. Cheap too!

Theres an intersting record put the flips side in refosoul i thnk-ill dig that out an get it up-sounds great for today -good good tip!!

absolutely seconded. well, mr parker doesnt have had a copy left and the very few that were sold to the UK `s top DJ`s came all from one source..so I doubt quantity will ever crop up. maybe the odd copy on ebay in years (just like Willi Tee`s YGPSD) but I am afraid thats about it..

Yes I did give it a few plays mainly about this time last year, but only ever at the 'Move On Soul Club' nights in Coventry. Played Birmingham Spirituals around the same time and 2 or 3 years back was playing one or two other gospel bits that in the last few months seem to have suddenly become very in-demand! Stuff like Gospel Comforters - Yes God Is Real which I played covered up and only uncovered when I started selling up (which I'm no longer doing!!). There's some great gospel stuff around, the Martha Bass posted earlier blew me away and is simply outstanding but for me the big gospel record of 2011 will be this:

But talking of which I have to say you're wrong - my Al Green c/u and the Swan Silvertones 'God is Real' which has not 'gone' yet so a good call for 2011 are better than the Salem Travellers...which is still great!

yep good stuff Adam - so much stuff in this genre i cant remember if I got the brooklyn allstars from you[brilliant also] -in the batch -its good to see Shirley Caesar getting some plays also -I remember playing a inex amdrews track years ago on mocking bird and the purists threatening to hang me by the short and curlies lol,the ward singers etc are never off the decks at home along with the gospel travellers etc,nice to see good tunes which are immensly soulful coming through -remember at the casino lots of the funkier stuff got a good tuting to then half the soul nation stated picking it up on the side lol!!

Don't think the Brooklyn Allstars was from me Baz, though it might well have been lol. The Shirley Caesar is a great record and seems to have really got peoples attention in the last few months........there's so much out there from all the genres of soul music that is yet to be heard by the majority of the northern scene, just got to keep your mind open and keep listening

nice tune indeed and the first time I heard it...my very first guess of course was that it is by Phyllis Dillon. Such a unique & great voice !

I agree with SEBASTIAN on the PHYLLIS DILLON version it's nowhere near the quality of BETTYE SWANN version or even the ZZ HILL cover in my honest opinion
