I defy anyone to tell me that they didn't have a good time. Five superlative acts, backed by a great band, a selection of proper soul records from three ageing reprobates and a full floor throughout the evening for both the watching and dancing portions of the entertainment.

I have no doubt that I'll be just the first to say that it really was a night to remember. But I'm glad that I AM the first.

To Ady, for bringing it together, I say well done kidda, let's start getting ready for Kent's 50th, shall we?

This was a fantastic night. All acts performed above my own expectations with Maxine topping the bill with a set I didn't want to end. Thanks to all involved in making it happen and thanks to Kent Records for 25 years of being, without question, simply the top Soul music provider on the planet!

Oh, and if your reading Kent peeps - forgot to pick up a tee shirt. Can I order ?

Don't post much, especially while in the UK with little internet access, but...

My missus and I went to the Kent gig last night expecting something pretty damn great, and we got our expectations blown out of the water. Just the fact that things ran smoothely through set changes and all those acts was fantastic; the fact that the band was stellar, and every artist surpassed expectations, was simply heaven.

Just adding my name to the 'Thanks!!!!' pile. Topped off a helluva trip to the UK.

Aiiight, gotta run and buy one of those red suits Winfield Parker had...

8 hours on, and 6 /12 hours of satisfied sleep later, I'm still having a great time in my mind...

I wonder if it's occurred to anyone else that, in racking up its quarter of a century (and counting), Kent has already been in existence for considerably longer, as a label, than almost any of those that last's night's formidable bill of talent recorded for in the 60s!

Shows much for the staying power of soul music and for the unswerving loyalty of its collectors and fans...

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant night of the best music on the planet!

With so many fine soul artists leaving us, it was an honour to see some of the best performing live, definitely a night to remember.

Well done Ady, and everyone else involved, and thank you.

"Leave at 4" we said "get there in plenty of time for Winfield" we said "even on a friday" we agreed - Bol**x!!!!!!!!

What should be no more than a 3 hour journey from the South Coast, even during Friday rush hour, took us 5 hours with over 3 of those on the M25 due to a major accident at the M4 junction.

Not being a massive fan of live acts, I still wanted to witness Mary Love and Winfield and missed both but as we walked into the venue was struck by its size and the obvious scale of the event due to the professional set up on the stage in the distance. I wasn't expecting something so grand but in hindsight it was befitting for the celebration that was in progress. First impression??? Amazing venue.

Got a pint with Russ - who is now able to walk on his own - and dumped him near the front just as The Flirtations came on. Must say as I walked around the place they sounded really good but their rendition of "Stronger than her love" for me, was awesome. Obviously the band had a major part to play and played it very well. I enjoyed Maxine's set and even when she missed her cue on "One in a Million" (I think) looking round all you could see were encouraging and forgiving kind smiles - she could have hummed it and it would have been fine with us. The backing singers did make me smile when they gave, what seemed, a sigh of relief at the the end of her set, they once again performed wonderfully.

The focus of this event was obviously the live acts and it must have taken so much planning and preparation to put on what was, without any doubt, the most professional live event of this musical genre on this scale. Thank you Ady and all your team - even Kenny - who was as gracious as ever.

Back to the venue and the rest of the night - on more than one occasion I heard the words all-niter mentioned - was so up for it last night along with many others. Wouldn't it be a perfect venue for a once a year all-niter or even a New Years Eve event - blah blah - in essence I'd like to think that wasn't the last time I attend a soul event there.

Classics and club sounds pursued ensuring the main floor and the superior mezzanine floors were kept busy till the end.

Out of curiosity I'd like to know what the attendance was. Whatever the actual figure, it was a huge turnout.

At the end of the night we discussed who we'd seen but more to the point, missed due to the immense size of the place - it was wonderful losing Fudge for long periods

Special thanks to Andy BB, Chalky (happy b'day m8), Fudge and Tina. So many familiar smiling faces. A wonderful evening which we didn't want to end. A major success I'd say - and well worth the 5 hour trip there.

big Hi to everyone I saw and those who I missed, and those who I rambled onto.

What an amazing party. I'm not sure I've seen a dance floor as big and as full as it was last night outside of a weekender event. And what a great mix of people of all ages and from all places there to celebrate Kent's landmark anniversary.

There is without doubt another 100 years of life left in this music yet!

Well done Ady, and all involved. A truely prodigious event!

Hang on mate.....Have you never been to Stoke, St Ives, Bisley to name but a few.............

Great night, The Flirtations were the act of the night for me not sure the misses would agree with me though...no change there then!

Good to see all our friends and the Hamburg soul travellers back together again.

Thanks Ady, Nice one

Fantastic!!!! Got in there early and as time approached we looked round the huge hall and it appeared no one was going to come to see the show, it was very sparce but as Winfield kicked off proceedings all those thoughts were dispelled as it was soon rammed.

Highlight for me was Winfield, he was the one I've never seen and boy can he still belt out a tune!! Thought the Flirtations were excellent as well, as were all the acts.

I hope I look half as good as Tommy when I'm 75...I doubt it mind I look twice his age now and I'm almost half his age laugh.gif I certainly feel as old as him this morning

Well done Ady and Kent records! Here's to the next 25 years

Just sorting through a couple of 100 photos. Will upload an album shortly.

Thanks to those who got me cards and to Toby and Jock for the prezzies

I don't think they are quite the scale that last night was, certainly not St Ives and Bisley. It would be interesting to know how many were in. 1000? 1500? The Forum is a 2000 capacity venue and it certainly felt at least half full to me with the dance floor packed and both floors buzzing...

Pulling off somthing on this scale in London is no easy task, and the slickness of the operation and presentation of the whole thing was really impressive. What a way to celebrate your 25th birthday!

Fantastic event in every way, and as Steve mentioned, I think everyone who was there left with a smile on their face and many wondering if an allnighter could be pulled off at that venue...

10 out of 10, and sadly I'm not sure we'll ever see anything quite like it again!

My Opinion Brill my review Biassed dont bluddy care had a great time

Right you travel down the A1 to North London on a Friday afternoon.busiest traffic day of the week M1 blocked due to accidents, at Colsterworth there is on the traffic news a 6mile tailback with roads congested north and Southbound, Linda's Driving Doug with Map of venue Location in Hand, its 1510 hours. and THEN where in London after stopping for a break at Biggleswade and its only 18.00 hours and where 100 yds from venue and parked, and there was me sweating it would be a long while.

Front door directed to side by ADY and given AAA

Access All Areas pass(lucky cool.gif

wander up on to Stage where (Gypsies)Flirtations are just finishing rehearsals being watched by Mary Love and Maxine Brown,

and a few friends and venue Staff, make and greet old and new acquantices get hugs and Kisses from Max and Mary,

go upstairs meet Tommy Hunt And Meet Tommy's cousin Winfield Parker and his Lovely Wife Sarah,Tommy says to me tonight Doug you are going to hear a guy whose voice is as powerful as Edwin Starr's,Wasnt wrong. Later

Go downstairs where Kenny is giving out the Free Cds cracking. 10 track CD of songs from the artists appearing and some of what they will sing later.

too many songs to list that the artists do ,but you know the best they have ever done add to that a few covers of other artists songs and one or two suprise added and unnissued trax ,didnt have the time to get the track listings from the band this time so didnt get all the songs, all I can say if you werent there you missed out, although there was a good crowd in but wasnt a complete sell out still 1500 plus great night,

On stage a little later as people couldnt get parked or trains where late, intro done on Stage by Eddie,

bring on the voice MR WINFIELD PARKER and Tommy was not wrong 1st Time in the UK for Winfield and we have missed a treat a few songs drew the Audience into the highs and lows of song perfection Absolutely Brilliant

Next Up Miss Mary Love(Since the First Cleethorpes weekender have had a soft spot for Mary and tonight Absolutely awesome from "Bitter" to "In Your Hands " the crowd lapped it up

3rd A few band changes and The Flirtations came on,If u have seen the Girls before you may have been suprised at the level they performed ,but this wasnt a cabaret show this was Northern and proffesional to a t,excellent show and the trax performed by them from the Gypsy days (Dawn)Womans world / Jerk it,Brilliant add there own Northern Hits inc Nothing But Heartaches crowd loved it,

Band changes again and Tommy Hunt 7 songs inc his 7ts hits and Wand recordings plus covers of Bacharach/David Dusty/Dionne record "Just dont Know what to do with myself"to finish off with.

superb

finally to the first lady of Northern Soul

Maxine Brown

My personal Favourite and I know Ady has a big soft spot for.

stage and perfection in motion Audience in the Palm of her hand.

A totally brill performance all her monsters "Torture"Let MeGive you my loving"Since I found You"One in A Million"Oh no Not My Baby"etc an encore with Tommy Hunt of "It Takes Two"

all the artists reintroduced for a final wave goodbye and three and a half hours has whistled by and its Midnight all over "shame"

And with the audience made up of soul fans plus such artistes as Jimmy James,Jimmy Ruffin, Linda Lewis and one or two others who i saw but couldnt put names to faces.

Took the Artistes up to the Balcony to sign Autographs etc left the Auditorium at about 01.30 for a drive back to Newark totally gobsmacked, super brill thanks ADY CROASDELL and ACE records for a totally memorable night.

which will be hard to top.

Not my first time at the Forum (Animal Night Life's Last Gig) but I did forget just how big the place is a cross between Prestatyn & Wigan Casino.

The Flirtations super wonderful the harmonies and shoop doos will remain in my ears forever, Max, Tom, Wini and Mary all my favourite records on the same night and Live on a sound system as big as a house (Envy).

If you missed this night you sadly have missed a truly memorable anniversary and now you will have to wait another 25 years for the next one.

I think I said to you in the pub be fore we got to the Forum, that I had that feeling that it was going to be a night we would all remember for the right reasons for the rest of our lives, and I don't think I was proved wrong

WOW where did the last 24 hours go, left home at 4.30pm yesterday and just got home  .

A few months back Dim (Rbman), Wit (Pete Benett) and I decided we were long over due for a dimwit promotions night out, I suggested this event to Dim & Wit who agreed this would be perfect

We had a fantastic night and hats off to Ady and his team for pulling off one of the most memorable nights of soul we will see in our lifetimes.

Where do I start, for once I am lost for words, and getting wierdly tearfully emotional just thinking back on last night.

MUSIC - TOP DRAWER ALL NIGHT

VENUE - SPOT ON

ORGANISATION - SLICK

ATMOSPHERE - ELECTRIC

THE PEOPLE/COMPANY - THE BEST (Nearly all my favorite people in one room, Dim, Wit, Mandy Toby, Kev, Phil, Taffy, KarenB, Steve G Bearsy, ANdyBB ,Carrots, Dave Rimmer, Woody, Bernadette and loads more very special people, and all that kissing, what else could a girl want)

OVERNIGHT ACCOMODATION - LUXURIOUS AND COSY, Thanks Wit for putting up Dim and I for the night, (mind you the "in house" DJ was a bit suspect and deffo a serious :g::g::ohmy: )

This time I am not going to appologise for repeating myself, which most of you know is something I do often when pissed, but last night was one night I will remember for the rest of my life, Thanks again Ady and team. :D

Congratulations to all @ Kent!

For me this was the event of the year by a country mile (and I go to a lot of events)!

Everything was first class and the atmosphere was just brilliant - it really took me back to some of the best gigs I've ever been to in the last 37 years!

Excellent all round -please convey my thanks to everyone involved and don't make us wait another 25 years for the next one!

Thanks for all the great comments and sentiments and I agree it was a truly great night.

It's been just about the toughest period of my life work-wise and if I looked a bit distant on Friday night, it was because I was still working up to 1.45, dealing with an event like that was new territory for me.

I think we had about 1500 people through the doors including guests and though it was a big success all round it was totally Kent's backing that made it possible. All the directors and staff supported me and the project completely, through some bleak moments as well as good. My immediate boss Roger Armstrong was responsible for the initial idea, gave me lots of good advice and stuck his neck out and put his company's finances on the line. One of the most gratifying moments for me was seeing him grinning from ear to ear over the whole thing. In fact there was a lot of that going on, from my 16 year old son and his mate who ended up on stage with Maxine (not nepotism, everyone else nearby bottled it!) to 60 year old stalwarts of the soul scene who remembered the original 60s revues and compared this one more than favourably. Neil Scapelhorn Ace's press person put in a lot of hard productive work and Yvette Deroy who ran the Kent stall contributed immensely too.

The acts really excelled and pulled together, they didn't even ask where they were on the bill until rehearsals and were all happy with being vital parts of the show. Winfield Parker was a slight gamble in that I'd never met him or heard him sing but Tommy assured me he was good and how right he was. Professional, energetic, cool and talented about sums him up and the clothes he wore to rehearsal were as stylish as the suit he was sporting on stage.

Mary has always been dear to mine and Kent fans' hearts since she sang track 1 on Kent 001 and every time I hear that opening drum roll and beautifully sung "You" I get goose bumps. She was the star act at the first Cleethorpes Weekender and sang at Ace's 25th and the Jazz cafe celebrations for us too. Every time she's on stage her church singing and love of her music gives us a memorable performance and her rendition of Randy's favourite I'm In Your Hands was just perfect.

The Flirtations not only provided glamour with a capital Wow, but also showed they can sing their socks off, as well as shimmy their butts off. Their UK Deram tracks in particular sounded at least as good as most songs cut in the States at that time and were full of soul. They brought along Jimmy James, Carl Douglas and a whole UK soul entourage too. Linda Lewis turned up as well and got to talk with Mary about them both cutting Bitter Into Sweet as their first records.

Tommy Hunt looked resplendent and sang beautifully, particularly on his great ballads which is always the sign of a class singer. Lover was a treat for me, having originally unearthed it and his charm and enjoyment of the occasion won the crowd over effortlessly.

Maxine has been the patron saint of the 6TS Rhythm & Soul club since 1979 and her presence is always an honour and a treat for us. This time though she really surpassed herself and I believe it was her greatest performance, if not ever, then certainly since she came back into our lives in the 90s. Utterly prepared and professional, she combined that with her natural singing talent and a great stage presence. Every move was for a purpose and I really felt we were in the presence of a great star.

The acts all got on like they were the best of friends and enjoyed every minute of their stay. They were knocked out by the audiences support, knowledge and love for them.

I eventually got to DJ for the last 15 minutes after original 6TS DJs Tony Rounce and Roger Stewart had kept the dancefloor buzzing to the end, my thanks to them and MC Eddie Pillar who was called upon at very short notice and did a great job for us. Like the acts, I too was so pleased with the fantastic turn out and the sea of faces of soul friends and family that filled that huge, noble venue up. People had made a lot of sacrifices and effort to get to a do that could only go on until 2 am an expensive affair, but that made the previous months of work totally worth-while. Even though it's going to be a long time before anyone tries something on that scale again, at least we know we can now at least consider it.

It was an Awesome night one that will stay with me for a very long time.

I was so glad we made it , didn't think it possible after spending a heavy weekend last week at Prestatyne , but once we turned the corner into wednesday we just knew this was a MUST.

I started out at 6.15am from Hornsea , arrived at 2.45 pm... do I get the longest journey prize ?

Got down there early as we didn't have a ticket , got in first and we were gobsmacked at what a brilliant venue this was. Last time I was a here was wehen it was known as the Town and Country club , I didn't appreciate its spendour then never looked up at the ceiling and marvelled at its beauty. well I was a sprog at the time smile.gif

It was very atmospheric dry ice and the lighting was superb , when Winfield came on in that fab red suit and then the lights went red it was an awesome sight ! He was soooooooo polished gave us a superb opening performance.

It was great to see many faces that we knew and hadn't seen for a while. It felt like one of those events that brought all the tribes together , bit like the Dells did at Trentham Gardens a few years back.

I loved looking at the different fashions that makes the London scene what it is sooooooo different , bringing mod /soul and just normal people of all ages and back grounds together to have a "Good time".

I loved the style of the jocks too , hearing Elmore James broom LOUD was sooooooo cool . Well done that DJ !

Mary Love just blew me awaaaaaay with that voice that sounds as perfect today

as it did on those recordings we play at home.

The Flirations ...... 10/10 for style and sheer WOW factor , those dresses were awesome , Shirley has knocked years off with the new hair style I had a job registering that it was her . Mind you as soon as she started to move on that stage I knew it was her , she can shake a tail feather I can tell you. Ernie's lead vocals were spot on as was Pearly's .. Second time I have seen the girls perform , and this was top drawer stuff.

Tommy Hunt , what a gent he is , he looked so humbled at times , this meant must have meant so much to him especially bearing i nmind he is in his 70's ! . He alos mentioned Winifield was a cousin of his and how glad he was to perform on the same stage with him.

Maxine Brown ... I think she takes the crown of the Lady of Kent records , she wowed us with her evening dress , she looked superb , took command of the stage and just rolled out hit after hit after hit. For me "Torture" was "the moment in time" that I would keep in a bottle for future sniffs of a very expensive perfume. We all sang along and enjoyed it sooooooooo much.

A very special night , A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT.

Well done to Ady and all the team behind it ..you did it !

Weekend ended well too , never thought I would be browsing a Camden Market

furniture stall on saturday morning and hear Sherrie Taylors Bells ringing in one stall and Jackie Ross in the next one .

An all in superb weekend !

You did great Jackie, there were so many shrinking violets around that Maxine nearly had to turn round to no dancers until you volunteered and Will and Ben got told. I'm sure someone out there must have snapped it, my son would love a copy too if anyone has one of him and his mate.

I can't really add anything new to what others have said about the night's proceedings, but just want to say THANK YOU for one of those nights that will keep me warm at night should I make old age. It was ....simply WOW!

Even though I only had one drink, most of the night was a blur for me. It was all a bit like being in a dream or watching a movie - all too good to allow emotion or a sense of reality spoil it. I love live acts, but on top of that, I heard records I had forgotten that sent me back to my late teens and well away from any of the other people who were there.

I stood at the front for most of the acts, so I thankfully grabbed a few video's on my phone (such low quality pics can't be against the venue rules whistling.gif ) and we replayed them during breakfast in London yesterday and when we caught up with Carms again at the services heading home. Whilst we had our favourites, we were all amazed at how good each of them were. Biggest surprise for me was Winfield. I was hugging the front rail and drooling over that man who sang like a god, when a sweet young mod girl next to me said: "He's so great - but doesn't he remind you of your dad?" ...Suddenly my fantasies shattered around me and I noticed a legendary soul artist on stage, still singing like a god.

Winfield really was wonderful, as were the others :P - Mary Love, the Flirtations, Tommy Hunt and my alltime favourite Maxine. Ms Brown was even better than her last Cleethorpes! My eyes and ears were glued to the stage (left ear hearing is still bad). I was really sad to see it end. I wanted them all to start again... just like you can do with a record at home. But all artists came back on stage for a last bow and farewell.

My only regret that night was rushing to the upstairs back bar to meet them afterwards per the announcement on stage, and not waiting long enough. When I went back again a few minutes later (I thought) with my man in tow, we were told by a few that we'd missed them all. I am still kicking myself over that  . Ended up chatting with a few mates before realising we were the last people left in the small top back bar. It was 2am and we moved downstairs to see lots of people dancing and drinking as Ady introduced the last song.

Happy 25th Kent Records - wow, what a birthday party!!!
