How about every version of "The Look On Your Face"?

I don't personally remember hearing any of 'em played out before the late 80s but, as I said earlier (to some derision, it would appear  ), I spent quite a few years in the middle of that decade doing very little other than going to the cinema three or four times a week...

Oh yeah, and possibly Bobby Patterson's "I'm In Love With You" which I'm sure must have been played in the 70s but which didn't really achieve classic status until the late 80s...

Funnily enough I can tie in the John Edwards version of The Look On Your Face to a cinema visit in the 80s. I bought mint Bell issues of both John Edwards and Bobby Reed from Ian Clark's sales box in Rocks Off, Hanway Street on a Friday afternoon and then went to see the first day screening of Heathers at The Screen On Baker Street that evening. Bobby Reed was £30 and John Edwards £20. I had heard the topside of Bobby Reed in a club (honestly can't remember where), but was only convinced to buy it when I played the flip, If I Don't Love You in the shop. The John Edwards was a blind buy, but I loved his Aware album so took a punt. I can clearly recall looking at the records in the cinema and not being able to wait to get home to play them. Happy days.

I remember Butch playing this at 100 Club when I went every month, that was years ago.

I remember first hearing Butch play this at the 100 Club, it knocked me sideways

Couple more: Jimmy Elledge Sad Town C/U as Lou Roberts? by Kitch, and (love it or hate, I'm the former) Pee Wee Shuck and Huey.

Great thread and to think some would have us think all the good northern had gone before Stafford

Mentioned Almeta in my list earlier, Russ.

Searling 'Parkers' spin.

Now you see I would question that, as Coz B and Dennis were playing it at Caister and such like and then I heard R.S play is at Parkers

Go On And Laugh definitely predates Stafford. John Anderson sold it to John Vincent, who sold it back to Anderson, who sold it to Richard Searling, who sold it back to John Anderson who sold it to the Dobsonian Institute.

Are you sure Go On and Laugh is John Anderson, John Vincent told me he found it, asked Richard if he wanted it around '80, but Richard gave it him back saying too good for the Northern crowd then. Then sold on to Butch.

JV used to be a member on here. Does he post any more? My recollection of the story may be incorrect Chalky, but John Anderson definitely handled the disc more than once.

JV also told me at the time he still has the master tapes for this too. If I remember and I get the chance I'll ask Butch tomorrow night.

It was, Andy Dyson probably the first I remember spinning this at the Hoist in Conisboro that Andy and Rod ran.

Newsounds was played by Mark Linton at Shotts, my mate took back the Turbo lp from a record hunting trip to USA in 1988 let him borrow it, another one from Mark at Shotts was unissued Metros Whats Wrong With Your Love

I'm sure someone will have a more complete recollection of the chronology of The Prophets, but the version on the Horace's Capitol Soul anthology predates the discovery of the released version, which only existed as hearsay at the time. It was this version, or a very similar cut which Butch had played for some eighteen months or so before the release of the album. The actual 45 was rumoured to exist but an actual playable copy didn't emerge until some years later. The released version, while good, doesn't have the same magic as the 'tape version'. I call it a tape version because I don't know whether this would have existed on a contemporary (i.e. 1960s) acetate or whether it came from Eddie Singleton's actual masters. Perhaps Ady can tell us the full story.

Yes master tape from Eddie, thanks to my dear friend and fellow Soul Saucer, Ian Levine introducing us. Did I give Butch an acetate then. Andy Rix tracked down the Prophets and I think eventually got one out of them. wasn't that the one that arrived in 8 pieces as he'd just put it in an envelope? Another playable one turned up later.

Presumably Antellects and Primers have been mentioned. What about Herman Lewis or that one on Lime. I don't think records like Garland's Ain't That good Enough or Girl I Love You got played until the 80s. john Edwards versions of Ain't That and How Can I Go On Without You certainly didn't.

Howabout Jimmy Andrews Big City Playboy, shed loads of RCAs and Scepter/Wand and 1,00 big beat ballads. not to mention the Latin slot!

A few more obscure 60s off the top of me head which I don't see mentioned:

Richard Marks did you ever lose something

Tim & Dave Girl you're just so good to me

Homer Banks Sweetie Pie

Traditions / Parisiens

Georgettes Hard hard

Willie Feaster (Voices)

Walter Wilson "Love keeps me crying"

The slow version of Natural Four (ha ha!!!) too slow pre 85

Young ladies on Stang

Tokays "Baby baby baby"

Royal Robins "Something about you"

Chico Lamarr

From the 70s how could you forget Natural Impulse, the dreaded Papa Bear & Cubs which I am sure some people will say is good, and Willie dee "Looks like rain" - only now starting to get the credit it deserves

Steve
