Guest StefMalajny
Over a thousand turned up last year to dance on the holy grail site of Northern soul,The grande Arcade Wigan It may be a shopping centre now and you have to close your eyes and dream a bit to go back to your youth but only a place like the Casino could pull so many people for an event like this. Russ tells me that tickets are selling faster than last year and the fire limit has been increased to 2000 for this event. Now heres my tip for a free nite out Some of last years badges sold for £100 on ebay ( can only happen with the Casino) this being the 35th Anniversay the badges will go for more so my suggestion is buy a few badges which will only be available on the day ,bang them on ebay and it will cover entrance , drinks and poss a hotel to crash afterwards, also if you buy Steve (the badge man)a pint he might sell you a black badge, i believe there are only ten of these and they will be worth serious a bob or two. So if you can close your eyes and dream you now where to go and if you cant dream then I beleive Top Man have got a good sale on for full details check https://www.wigan-casino.co.uk/ Link to comment
Guest StefMalajny
Spoke to Russ last nite and he tells me that they have discovered some great new unseen photos taken at the Casino ,the nice thing about these photos are that they were taken by a young up and coming proffesional photographer with a high quality camera, and they were more action shots rather than buddies posing, because the guy also took early photos of stars like Paul Weller and lots of other celebs his photos may be featured on The One Show, so look out for that. The photos will be on display at the reunion, Steve is gonna put a couple up on the Wigan website for people to have a look https://www.wigan-casino.co.uk/ Link to comment

Paul-s
RUSS in a shopping centre...sounds about right. If ever there was a man who knows nothing about the scene or soul its got to be....well go figure. Been dining out on the same stories and tunes for the past 35years...What has this got to do with 'soul' or a scene thats moving forwards? Nowt. very, very, very sad. £100 for a badge?! You would think he could buy some new records with those proceeds? Well, each to his own, its a strange world of retro memory soul & tunes that I am not a part of...phew! Link to comment

Guest StefMalajny
It may not be everyones cup of tea but when people travelled from Australia to attend and are coming back again then it just shows what a wonderful place the Casino was and of course it was made up of wonderful people who get a chance to meet again Link to comment
vaultofsouler
It may not be everyones cup of tea but when people travelled from Australia to attend and are coming back again then it just shows what a wonderful place the Casino was and of course it was made up of wonderful people who get a chance to meet again Not my cup of tea as you coin it and have no interest personally although I know there will be plenty of people who enjoy this sort of thing..... but the reason for my post is what gets me is Mr Winstanley's continued ideation that WC is an ongoing venue/event.... for something to celebrate Anniversaries (as it's advertised) it has to be ongoing, alive and kicking, etc., surely, and not 27 years shut.... and that's not pointing out all the "missed" Anniversaries before this last decade's resurgence of the scene.... If Mr W wants to hold these events to recollect the halcyon days of a once great venue then that is up to him and good luck to him.... but please advise him to drop the 36th Anniversary tag no doubt earmarked for next year and call it what it is.... a reunion.... For anybody planning on going.... hope you enjoy it.... Edited September 4, 2008 by vaultofsouler Link to comment

Yes I know what he became like - but from 74 to 77 he was equal to anyone else there. Steve G
I actually feel sad for Russ. He has singularly been unable to replicate his DJ success as an anchorman at the Casino - and you'd have to ask why not? I mean he was a major part of the most succesfull allnighter ever for 8 years, but since then has singularly failed to do anything, except live off of the past reputation of the Casino. It sounds like he has a body that is trapped with a mind that hankers back to the glory days of the 70s, and something that has long past and died. All these candle-lit vigil walks up Station Road, dancing in shopping centres etc - I mean it's quite sad, and shouldn't really warrant mickey taking by you lot of rotters. I think it must be truly awful to be in that position. Link to comment

Guest StefMalajny
As Russ self apointed publicity man I am claiming 2 black badges one for me and another for Andy, that only leaves 8 were not selling ours so reckon they will sell for about 200 quid each, strange world of Northern a few interesting comments firstly the price its £15 for a ticket ,the same price to watch the mighty Posh play a team like Aldershot, most would argue relatively reasonable especially if youve seen the Posh this season, there is a cracking line up , its on till 4am and it includes a free badge that will be worth more than your entrance fee, infact as an experiment I am gonna get my ticket signed by the line up and bang it on Ebay and see what it goes for, reckon it will be more than the entrance fee. I think those that moan about Russ should hang there head in shame, firstly he is a great guy, never ripped anyone off as far as I know, djayed at the Casino for 50 quid a night so never earnt a fortune from the punters, he informed me many of the records in the Top 500 were his discoveries and indeed he used to lend the records to the other jocks who were under his instructions to play hourly untill they broke the record ,(he probably did then sell a few spares to these guys) he has djayed for me twice, both with vinyl that would have many collectors frothing at the mouth and Northern Soul runs through his veins. I know its a shopping centre but I reckon it dont matter what it is know, even if it was a funeral directors people would be turning up to that spot and dancing, its part of modern day history The event is costing circa £8k to put on so if he makes a few bob fair play to the chap.
