Simon, it was a  pity you didn't make it to Radcliffe on Saturday night.

The R&B room was very busy with lots of dancers and a great atmosphere every time I went in there.

Surely that's answered your original question then? :hatsoff2:' />

the rnb played at the gloucester nighter in the main room filled the floor to mace...

Ask the Man in your avatar what he was singing...He'd almost definately say RnB. huh.gif RnB and 60's Soul music are basically the same thing. I get very confused when people say they don't like RnB and are dancing to it all night in the main room.??????????????????????

Rnb dead  , not a chance!

I had the pleasure of Dj-ing in Barcelona at the 'Boiler club' and I can honestly say it's the best night I've played at closely followed by the Pow Wow. There was lots of younger people and a good mix who are into the music/vinyl also people who are just out for a night of dancing to quality music. It was refreshing to see so many young fit women people loving the music for what it is not how rare or expensive it may be  .

People shouldn't get boged down with the term Rnb. The key is to play a range of music that makes you want to dance Rnb, Soul, Mod, Boogaloo, Latin etc. It sounds so simple but so many people forget this and before you know it the Rnb room is empty only left with the hardcore punters who are out most weekends and sometimes you cant recover the atmosphere you tried to build up all night. Thing is with northern rooms you find poeple dancing to any old shite but because it's rare or a certain dj plays it they feel obliged to dance :sleep3: .

I always think to myself "what would a group of younger people think if they walked in and heard tunes like Church Street Sally, Jt Parker, Rudy Love, Manny C, The Jokers, The Isonics, Bobby Valentin, Parisians, Danny Owens, Rufus Wood they would be on the dancefloor having a great time.

Long Live Rnb! Long live quality soul music! Modern + Xover will be the one that suffers

Having read most of this thread, I have decided that I will indeed twat Simon over the head with my cappuccino.............strangle him with my paisley scarf..........and then run over his plastic vespa with my original italian SX Lambretta.

The bloke is clearly a div.

You dont really know anything about Northern Soul do you callum ?

Maybe he dont, but the question was is "RnB" dead - not " is northern soul dead" was it not ? thumbsup.gif

And I also think this is another "classic" wind up thread from the trouble maker known as "Si Curden"

but what do I know?

No he "dont" lol. But lets face it there woudnt be an r n b little room "scene" (another meaningless new word ?) piggybacking with its poseurs and crap dancefloors if it wasnt for the main northern (truly across the board ) room he so obviously despises .

And to answer the question. Imo it isnt dead it just needs a slap the old stuff (esp most doowop ! ) strangled and the best bits brought into the main room. If the best bits havnt already been in there all long ! ! ! Call me old fashioned but it should all be in one main room oldies (60s) and newies (70s) together and across the (genres) board . Simples ! Lol. :-] x

wtf you on about?

It's got nothing to do with 'piggybacking' as you put it.

R&B has been a 'scene' for many years, even before the term 'Northern Soul' was ever invented.

So before you start casting doubt about who knows what about Northern Soul, maybe you should learn a little about it yourself.

And what's with the 'poseurs' comment?

You must have been having a bad day I reckon. ph34r.gif

Not so sure about that to be honest.....the Mod scene has always embraced many different genres of music, with R&B being a major part of that scene.

The Mod scene evolved long before the Northern Scene....so you could turn that statement on it's head and ask if there would there be any Northern Soul Scene without the likes of the Twisted Wheel club etc?

Who knows?....and more importantly, who actually cares? :)

boxes, boxes, boxes...people always seem to be trying to squeeze tunes into genres and seperate rooms. To me some Northern is pop, some funk is FONK and some r&b is rock n roll. But at the end of the day, i want variety at a night. I dont want 8 hours of just one genre. Live and let live. I definitely prefer djs that can mix it up a bit and aren't themselves stuck in the same (one genre) groove, then i get to hear an interesting spot.

I agree with the put it all in one room attitude and then, as Lonnie Liston Smith said, you can 'Expand your mind'.thumbsup.gif

good point callum , i think my point also was that a lot of people would like to see modern faded out! for me also its about people enjoying themselves to great dance music , be it northern , RnB , or just anything thats great to dance too! but couldnt see new people ever getting into the scene if they walked into a club packed with 60 year old men dancing to lovey dovey 70´s stuff like tinkerbell on ecstacy , if it was only based around modern i think the scene would definately die off , its thanks to RnB & Uptempo soul music that still gives todays scene a bit of appeal , and in a way coolness!! & would attract young people who had never heard this kind of stuff before!

I first attended Wigan Casino in 1973 and have enjoyed the music ever since. I now prefer R&B and attend very few Northern nights, so in your view that makes me a mod??

As for R&B always being part of NS, I remember people like Roger Banks emptying dance floors thirteen years or so ago because the vast majority felt R&B shouldn't be played.

I prefer seperate rooms to hear real R&B as opposed to the watered down, played out variety that you hear on the main floor.

If I wasn't so polite, I would say you don't have a clue what you are talking about biggrin.gif

Without R&B music NS wouldn't even exist Mr Bruschetta...all those soul artist you like playing from your top 500?

The majority started life singing hard hitting R&B

Anyway...i'm not getting into an arguement about R&B/Soul...A lot of 60s soul I love...as do many R&B enthusiasts...everyone has different taste

Callum was just answering the original question 'Is R&B dead'...rather well in fact

Seems to me by your contentious comments you're just trying to get a rise thumbsup.gif

RnB is dead

RIP RnB

Overheard at Barnsley a week ago, "RnB has run its course now; no one is up for it except the few hardcore cats n thay are getting fewer".

Has the RnB room run its course? Should venue promoters stop flogging a dead horse?

I am not sure of the answers but I don't see too many chocker block RnB rooms, yup it may just be the venues I am visiting, is there a vibrant scene out there or is it dwindeling off?

Oh dear , i hope not , im just getting into it.

Callum, Mace and Clanger are all right in their differents ways. There's definately a difference as to what R&B is played at difference venues all over the country, almost a north -south divide! Most mod nights in and around London tend to play a number of genres, including R&B, Club Soul, Ska, Funk, Latin, Hammond etc, although there has been a move towards more fifties style R&B and Popcorn at some nights, it really depends which DJ's are spinning.

There's also a big difference in what is the perception of 'R&B' in northern and mod circles. I often see records advertised as the next 'big' R&B sound on a list (some on this site) and it's not a style or sound that's currently popular, it's just the seller trying to move some unwanted stock. It tends to be only the big mod scene tunes that crossover to the northern scene, most tunes played in some venues would never be played out in northern clubs, especially some of the latin, hammond and funk style tunes.

COULD NOT AGREE MORE,R&B HAS ALWAYS BEEN PLAYED ON THE SOUL SCENE AS A WHOLE. WE EMBRACE ALL GENRES OF SOUL MUSIC, ITS WHAT KEEPS THE SCENE FRESH. .IF THE DJS DIDNT PLAY R&B AS WELL AS A SMATTERING OF LATIN ALA DAVID COLEMAN TYPES OF TUNES AND A DOLLOP OF OF MODERN AND CROSSOVER THEY REALLY WOULD HAVE A VERY LIMITED UP TO DATE PLAYLIST AS AFTER 40 YEARS OF DISCOVERIES THE WELL MUST SURELY BE RUNNING DRY. ALSO R&B TYPE NORTHERN IS THE BEDROCK OF THE MAJOR UPFRONT NITERS. IN CLOSING LIVE AND LET LIVE, THERE IS PLENTY OF MUSIC TO SUIT ALL TASTES., AND ENOUGH OF THE NEEDLESS INSULTS.IT DOES NOT MAKE PLEASANT READING.

Hi Beeks,

People that like R&B and have some kind of connection with the rare soul scene are -or have been- mods... with, obviously, the odd exception. And there's nothing wrong with that, as modernism is a great school of music: makes you want to investigate about jazz, jamaican music, latino sounds, R&B and soul. From there, you can shape your own musical taste and follow the evolution of the afro-american musical heritage until today, picking up whatever you think it's great...wich is the true ethos of modernism IMO.

Best!

Early 6ts RnB was paramount then evolved inc in the mix Mod/Freakbeat which then added full blown Stax Atlantic and add Motown into the menu gave us Club Soul followed by the eventual import of rarer 6ts vinyl which evolved to Northern and was then including all of the previous Genres and then crossover Mecca movement then taking a slight step to the rear Stafford rarer scene mollycoddled on for 10 or so years,Weekenders evolved playing all of the previous, then people started adding Modern to main room playlists,

This is when purists ( lovers of rawer soul music) started looking for the roots to hear (RnB and doowop some as near as dammitt Rock n Roll) to play out different rooms where required for differing viewpoints and musical tastes, and as mentioned earlier RnB venues are starting to appear again as they did in the early 6ts eg: Adlib club in Lincoln,so are we evolving or have we just revolved back to where we started,

Just a Viewpoint

and may help people think

Without teaching the kids of today what we started with we wont have a scene to evolve with again

IMO

R&b aint dieing but its deffo back to the smaller scene that is was a few years ago,. . down south there is a vibrant young scene playing great unknown r&B ..COMPLETLY OVERLOOKED BY THE NORTHERN OLDIES BIG ROOM CROWD............EZZIE . PS SOLD QUITE A FEW R &B RECORDS OF LATE ALL TO EUROPEAN OR SOUTH EAST ENGLAND BASED COLLECTORS yes.gif

TALKING OF NORTHERN OLDIES, MANY ARE IN FACT RNB.

. Why do you want seperate r n b rooms . Why ?

as a rather outspoken R&B fan I don't want separate R&B rooms ... i want separate R&B venues .

i am sick of being in a soul do and hearing "catch that bloody soddin teardrop " as a token gesture . for me R&B has many many facets and goes a lot deeper than most northern punters will ever know and delving into that can only be achieved in separate venues dedicated to exploring R&B , be it 50's , 60's , rockin' etc .

You dont really know anything about Northern Soul do you callum ?

Bit unfair to say I know nothing about NS i have been travelling far and wide up and down the country/europe to all-niters/mod nights since i was about 16 so for about 7 years. I know it's nothing compared how long some folks have been into it but I do try to find new stuff all the time and not just chase the oldies!

I Dont really know enough about modern or xover, I've treid istening to it but i just cant see the connection to uptempo gritty Rnb/Soul. The only modern track i remotely took an interest to was that one of the remix of the 'Nina Simone' track, sorry forgot the name, anyone know which one i mean?

Cheers

I miss Pow Wow, I miss the Backbeat room at Middleton, in fact I miss a dedicated all-night R&B venue that gets people excited, involved and walking away talking about what a great night they have had. The R&B room at Radcliffe is certainly the place to be, and has slotted quite nicely into the space that the original Middleton Backbeat room has left. But Radcliffe seems to be the only place at the moment where the additional rooms are supported enough to form a decent atmosphere.

2nd rooms struggle, no matter what the genre, and I'm not sure what the answer is. Maybe it's the co-promotion of an event where the promoters actually target their individual audiences, rather than just a single event with 2 or more rooms. What I have found is that decent soul music grabs the attention of the R&B crowd, and even though alot won't admit to it, decent R&B grabs the attention of the soul crowd.

There's more than enough people out there into their R&B,

The Hideawy, No Way Out and Out of the Blue would / do give me the music I enjoy along with an atmosphere to enjoy myself in, but the soul night hours make it a struggle to justify the 8 hour round trip from London.

Running a dedicated R&B night in London was also a thankless task. Pressure from bar / club owners to bring people in, pressure from the punters to play music they know (unbelievable, I know!). Even inviting the best R&B DJs on the circuit down resulted in punters standing by the side of the dancefloor waiting to hear something they knew, or someone they knew behind the decks, before allowing themselves to have a good night.

Don't get me wrong, we had a handful of storming nights at Hard as Nails, but I was also left with a feeling of embarrassment at times for the attitude towards some of our guest DJs.

There is an R&B / Mod scene in London, but unfortunately I have been to places where I have had to wade through an awful lot of mediocrity before finding the occasional night that comes together and a great time is had by all. There are some great DJs in London, but as someone else has said previously, there is little hunger for new sounds, and the dancefloor dictates what is played.

I don't just think it's London that suffers in this way, I have been to 'Mod' weekenders where it's the same attitude. I remember one DJ building up a great set then looking on in astonishment when JT Parker emptied the floor, because no-one at the time knew it. When he finsihed he said to me 'music of this quality is completely wasted on those cnuts', I make him completely right.

So R&B is struggling, but no more so than Northern / Rare / Modern Soul is struggling. It's all about evolution, and I think R&B realised this and is now attracting a younger sussed crowd (mainly driven by some big European events) and the future doesn't look too bad.

Well said me old muckerthumbsup.gif
