When i first read this naff, insulting script in 2003/4, i wrote to the North East film board, who were funding part of it ,to complain that it was an insult to a socio/historical period that had an influence on many people and also that it was just a very bad script and requested that they withdraw funding!

So, as your limited intelligence can hopefully deduce, i was NEVER going to be asked or involved in this trivial rubbish!

Thing is though Alan...Is SS really a true measuring instrument of the Northern Soul scene today? I personally think there are many more people who just dipped their toe a little bit back in the day & are happy enough with that...they are happy dancing to the old floorshakers on a Friday/Saturday night just having a bit of fun & reminiscing of the past with friends. That is who they were probably were aiming at....the majority... to make sure costs were covered...& perhaps an hopeful eye that some of the youth of today might pick up on it. Sounds up to now like it has hit that spot too I think.

It's my guess that they probably got the film that THEY wanted rather than the film that many S.S.'ers would have wanted. I'm not in the business of even wanting to understand what today's audiences require as I'm way past the target age for most films anyway,so it's difficult to comment on whether they got their targetting right or not.

However, the stats are out on the first 3 days that the film was shown in the UK via 6 screens and they'll probably be encouraged by the average cinema take in the period which puts it @ No.34 in the UK with an average £1504 take per site which isn't bad considering the meagre takings of lots of other films. Conceivably it could roll out to more cinemas over the next few weeks and build on that. However, the only real publicity I've seen for the damn film has been on here so maybe their PR needs to ramp up a notch LOL....

does anyone really give a sh&t if a track was played at the time or not? I don't see you giving Paul stick for using tracks which were not about at the time his play was set. Artistic license is used in practically every film which has some truth to it.

Whether the film is any good or not at the end of the day it's not a bad sound track is it? I can think of worse. Ok one or two a bit cheesy and would have been better if not used but there's some great Northern in there Trackdown, fantastic

Actually the soundtrack album's been playing in the office all morning and there's been a constant procession of people asking what various tracks are throughout, so the Soundtrack album definitely appeals to a wide section of people. Sounds pretty good actually - like a Greatest Hits type album which it really is in a way........

Just seen it in Bradford. I've given it 7/10.

I enjoyed it, as entertainment pure and simple.

It did give me a sense of nostalgia. It wasn't a perfectly accurate representation of the Casino but it did capture the atmosphere.

The dance-off was very contrived but worked to an extent as an artisitc tool to showcase the rivalry. but it only lasted a minute or so.

Overall quite enjoyable, But what do I know? I've never watched a Russian art house film in my life

You totally summed up the night we had here in Belfast as well two weeks ago Stevie. Didn't go with any high expectations but knew music would be good at least. A few beers before, packed cinema, good atmosphere etc. probably a project harder judged than to film the Bible or the Coran this. I felt quite pleased with the film and def entertained afterwards and so did the rest of our gang. .

I think its time for a cynical categorization of SoulBoy posters?

I think it's fair to say that we initially had a flurry of posts from some that had a vested interest in the film? This was then followed by an exited bout of posts from those who where going to be either included or asked for advise?

What followed was a painful wait until us lesser mortals had the chance to see the movie and we still have many finding it hard to locate a cinema showing the film so we now do still have two camps, those who have seen the movie and those that have not.

Those who have not seen the movie fall into categories of those who don't comment choosing to wait and those who air their concerns.

For those that have seen the movie I think we have three camps, those who are blown away and loved the film giving marks out of ten such as high sevens, the score you would normal see for epics such as The Godfather and The Deer Hunter.

We then have those who are bitterly disappointed at a wasted opportunity and leave the cinema deflated and a little underwhelmed.

The final third are the staunch denialists who I think confuse the topic with the content and mindlessly refuse to see any perceived attack on their youth.

If I'm going to be even more cynical I think that the final third fall into two categories, those who where actually there and those who sort of pretend they where there. Six or seven Wigan Casino visits during the long hot summer of your misspent youth would be a very potent image, potent enough for rose colored glasses?

The final third would be the real deal, the Wigan Casino regulars who actually shaped the genre along with the DJ's?

The problem is that no one wears a badge, well some do but they are most likely as the result of e-bay?

Every one is entitled to their opinion and it is only a film, I think it could have been so much more than just a film, it could have been a reference point for futre generations giving a full on look at our culture but sadly it is not.

I can see why so many are emotional about this film, and emotional for much different reasons with some very different emotions indeed.

I think those who missed out on being involved with this film have had a narrow escape.

Some food for thought there...

The 2 camps for me are folk with a direct/ indirect connection with this film or other projects and those with none.. The latter can seem to go watch it with no preconceptions and take it at face value.... Not the same for others and that me included...

A real mixed bag of reviews with regards to my mates at the moment...

A good topic and the mix of reviews are what keeps a thread fresh... All welcome and of interest.. Like with much in life, what floats your boat can be a bag of shite to others...

Plenty reviews coming in now as the film gets a few more viewings around the country.... Keep them coming..

Went to see it this week at the Empire cinema in Leicester Square

It was on Screen 9 - hidden away at the back of the cinema up two narrow flights of stairs in a room with about 35 seats, and 20 people in!

Went with a non-soulie mate - so it was really interesting to see their reaction

We both really enjoyed it - it's basically a love story with a background of Northern Soul, Wigan etc

Chatted over a couple of beers afterwards about the film - how authentic the 70s look and detailling was throughout - clothes, cars, houses etc. - the use of talc, adidas holdalls, the music

I think I probably enjoyed it less than my mate because, as someone who has been into Northern since I was a teenager, I thought there were some cringe-worthy moments in there (the dance-off being one)

The main thing that didn't really come through was the size/scale (place and number of punters) and the atmosphere that was the Casino (so I'm told - I was too young to go myself)

Overall, if you can see it as a film and not a documentary about Wigan Casino, Northern, your lives/youth etc it's a decent film - and it was entertaining (the main point probably)

OK it was low budget - but isn't that also true of most of the music we know and love?

The Soul Couple really enjoyed the film at Pictureville in Bradford. It was a nostalgic look at the 70's A bit of a love story with a Northern Soul backdrop! some good footage although the dance off' scenes were nothing to do with the scene in the 70's.

If you get a chance go out and see it - it's a film!!

This will put the cat amongst the pigeons with a few.... Saw it at Leicester Square the other night and enjoyed it. As soul couple has said above a straight forward love story set against a northern soul back cloth. It wasn't really an accurate reprersentation of the Casino in some ways, but it was an enjoyable enough film. Would watch it again when it gets onto TV.

Went to see it last night at Warwick Arts Centre - nice place - enjoyed it! As Steve said it is a love story with a Northern Soul backdrop - pardon the pun:lol: - funny in parts aswell, so just an entertaining story - not a documentary, well worth a look. (Tickets only £6.50 at Warwick aswell)

went to see this, the other day ... and didnt know wether to laugh or cry...still cant make my mind up,...although the music scores pretty good, the wife (non soulie) thought it was Great!..
