Looking through my records came accross a few Casino biggies in their time that never gey spins anymore where i go anyway.Take a look at these 5 for starters do they get any action nowadays all big dancers back in the day.

Out of those 5 i have only heard Otis Blackwell played recently the others not since the old days.Any thoughts out there on any of em could they stand up today i for one would love to dance to them all again.

Plenty of these forgotten for a reason and best left forgotten

Many still get plenty of spins.

Bongalis - Under cover - MS, only heard this a couple of times there, don't know if it was played anywhere else. Found one a few months later in one of those south London shops. Still have the record to this very day, love the way it rolls from stereo to mono all the way through the track.

Bongalias did get played at The Mecca early 74.

Also a big floor fuller for Tony Walker around local clubs around East-Lancs in the summer of 74.

A lot of records on this tread where played in other clubs, and alot before Wigan played them.

That is always the case, I have been talking to a lad on facebook and he was telling me about records that broke at the Cats 1st.

I lot of them I had always put down as Mecca or Torch records, but never went to the Cats so I wouldn't know.

Sisters Love was big everwhere before Alan Rhodes started DJing at Wigan.

I would have thought it was Russ who 1st played this at the Casino.

No doubt that Alan did play a good number of records 1st at Wigan.

First time I ever heard Sisters Love it was at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, played by guest DJ for the night - Ian Levine

Daytrippers - Part of the game - Karate

I'm told was popular at Wigan during the mod revival period 77-79.

Maybe not the greatest sound, but nicely fills the ground where the Northern Soul and mod scenes overlap.

These two really did it for me back in the day....and still do.......but seem to have fallen from grace too!

They're both a bit 'obvious' but I like obvious sometimes if you know what I mean!

'Bunny' came out on general UK release I think in about 1976 so it wasn't played at the Casino much after that........

Regardless whether or not Bunny got many plays after 76 it along with The Artisitics is hardly forgotten are they, far from it, they must be two of the most popular oldies about, played at most oldies venues week inn week out.

As a slight aside, the 100 Club must be the only Allnighter generating its own oldies & has been for many years........

Alpaca Phase III , huge at St Ives early 76 as well.........Probably Sam again

How about George Benson - On Broadway , one of the biggest sounds of 80/81 at Station Rd .......Not particularly good IMO unless , also Hot Dog - Co Co ( c/u as Casino Strut in 1980) , Dee Edwards - Loving You Is All I Want To Do

Kev just because they are 70's releases doesn't mean they originated from the Mecca, Pennington obviously was did but Brandon & Johnson was a John Vincent spin at Wigan, Liberty was an Alan Rhodes spin at Wigan and was also played at Cleethorpes, how you going to know where it was played first when 3 venues have the same record?... I'll check the next lot with you make sure I don't make any more mistakes...

Actually Kev's right Pete. Both Bill Brandon & Lorraine Johnson and Liberty were Levine/Curtis discoveries and both broken at the Mecca first. I can clearly remember Levine telling me about it on the phone just after he'd returned from a U.S. trip and then Brad telling me about it following a trip to the Mecca a few days later. I always saw "Let Me Be Your Full Time Groover" as a Mecca/Cleethorpes record rather than a Casino classic anyway. It was a hard-sell at Wigan in my memory.

And "Girl You Better Wake Up" was a 100% Curtis spin right from the git-go and a huge record @ the Mecca long before it reached anywhere else. However, it didn't take long for a zillion copies to flood in, so the take-up and follow-through was accelerated which resulted in the record peaking and dying really quickly.

However, this period was when certain records were being commercially 'nurtured' so it wouldn't be unusual for several people to get their hands on copies quick. Unless I'm totally mistaken, Levine found Bill Brandon & Lorraine Johnson either on a U.S. trip or via John Anderson, but crucially, he championed and absolutely hammered it and it worked like a dream at the Mecca for an eclectic and discerning audience. It was a floor-clearer at most other venues initially before it eventually took hold.

And Liberty was a 100% certified Mecca monster a good few weeks before it reached wider acceptance elsewhere. I'm pretty sure that Epic or Mel Bratt (where is he by the way?) would confirm that.

But, you're right Pete. It's always a contentious issue about who did what and when. I was just lucky enough to be wired into the epicentre of the scene at the time whilst being aligned with an almost unhealthy tendency to over-focus on the acquisition of brilliant rare records. Does this sound familiar?

Its one I play now and then Dave, surprising how many people don't know this one.....nice played along with bobby Valentin/Isonics in a latin-ish 3some.

Thelma Houston - I ain't going nowhere, the 1st version to be played at Wigan... album only I think, I have it on the album Thelma Huston..not heard it since 73/early 74 until 2 weeks ago, brilliant version.
