April 28, 201312 yr "Reconsider" by Brenda Holloway has got to be one of the very best unrealesed Motown Northern Soul tunes. Â Its a real shame it did not get released, maybe it was too good for it's time? Â

I think Richard Searling played it for a while in the early 80's.
April 28, 201312 yr They don't come any better than these three Jimmy Dean and William Weatherspoon gems:  That's The Night That love Died     The Elgins Take him Back If It Makes you Happy    The Contours I'm Here Now That You Need Me        JJ Barnes  Well, unless you include Helen and Kay's wonderful, Breakaway.  I'd have loved to been a fly on the wall at the quality control meetings when these were turned down!
April 28, 201312 yr I think by and large Motown's Quality Control got it right. Very few of these unreleased recordings are better than the universally known hits which sold millions and are regarded as stone bonking classics of their type. They may satisfy the obscurists and completists amongst us, but few represented a stellar leap in quality over what we regard as the quintessential Motown Sound. Â I wonder if Marvin Gaye for instance regarded 'This Love Starved Heart of Mine' (which I personally love) as being better than some of his million sellers? Not at the time it was recorded in May 67 when it represented a type of sound he had finished exploring and was moving away from. Â In fact - would we as Rare Soul fans and collectors even be bothered with such a track if it had been released, sold well and was widely available as a Tamla single for a tenner? Probably not. Â All IMVHO etc etc...

Probably some truth in that Sweeney, but, Angel Doll and Forever In My Heart by the Temps to my mind are incredible bits of Soul music, nothing to do with rarity as far as myself concerned, Smokey Robinson-Whatever makes you happy rightly seems to be getting venue play, £10 record, Edwin Starr-Running back and forth Fantastic Four-Pinpoint it down/Feel like I,m falling in love again, two more examples of cheap Motown records getting venue spins, but some great points in there  Kev
April 28, 201312 yr Surprised n one has mentioned The Miracles--Gonna Make It My Business  Utterly fantastic mid tempo track
