BOB WILSON - SUZY'S SERENADE.

I've never met anyone who liked it!

It was like when John Leach was being played at Wigan - nobody liked it!

Dolly Gilmore is fantastic.Played at the right venue,right crowd.I love me uptempo,but this has everything.

Surely some venue,up North,maybe on a Sunday afternoon,would play this.

What does it have? All I can hear are out of tune instruments and someone who can't sing to save their lives?

This was the first time I've ever heard this record, is it one of those joke records that people pay to make themselves?

What's not soulful about I Walked Away? It's got everything including the kitchen sink. An absolutely perfect all nighter record. Not one of my favourites but I can see why it's popular.

And what Bobby Goldsboro record is even played let alone 'packs floors' in 2012?

To many people still gets spun quite a bit in the nw,usualy fills the floor at the oldies venues pete.

Pleasantly surprised to hear that mate, it's a good record. I've never heard it played out since 1977 personally, but it's always been hard to get (the 'proper' version I mean)

for me worst record i have ever heard played out is Derek & Ray "Interplay" there are many records I dislike now but they were played many many years ago, but Derek & Ray I DETEST. I heard it played out again a couple of weeks back and the floor was full of people dancing to it, thus proving we all have different tastes. But I will always DETEST it .

I am off to play my copy of "My Hearts Symphony"(pictured below)...!

At the time it first got played at Wigan there was quite a buzz about it, I remember some of our lot went to St Ives and heard it there, we asked Richard the next week at Wigan about it and he said he'd heard of it and had got a copy on the way, the next week he got it and played it, so there was a buzz about it, at Wigan anyway, before it was even played. So perhaps it's one of those "you had to be there at the time" sort of records, same as the Gary Lewis pictured above, I wasn't old enough to attend when that was played but I have heard tapes with it on from 74 and it sounds fine played really loud.

I too am very suprised people dance to Interplay today, but we are all different!

I did dance to Gary Lewis many a time in '74 and still like the record! I also danced to Wayne Gibson, Guy Darrell, The Vogues etc etc (and I know you weren't suggesting I wasn't there )

I too have a tape with Richard Sealing play GL and the Carstairs after each other!

Brian Bennett Chase Side Shoot Up....big at the Torch apparently......you know it as the Golf theme...Jack Wardle from the Boro was selling them covered up.People are still listing records people like....Interplay...The Snake etc people like these records.

It was also played at the Casino covered up as "Soul A Go Go" by Bob Wilson Strings. The DJ who played it was John Vincent. I know this cos I was he argued with me when I said it was the golf theme, but I owned it at the time and new what is was.

I've missed the boat on this thread cos it's too long now to check whats been said. I have my own personal list of dog turd records - I'm sure some have been posted.

It wasn't actually meant to be a topic about records that we personally hate, if you read post one it explains it - it's about records that were played a lot but nobody actually appeared to like! Hence me saying I'd never heard of anyone who likes "Suzy's Serenade".

I'm surprised people dance to Interplay nowadays.

Pete,GL was as bad as it gets.I was there as a spotty naive kid,and it still left an impression on me.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just had to express my full-on hatred of Suzy's Serenade too!  I knew it was big at the Torch and I absolutely loved All Turned On/Hungry For Love, so couldn't wait to hear it.  What a disappointment it was when I heard it down at the Wax machine in Gloucester (Richard Selwood had an emi-disc he was trying to flog).  There's something about the chord changes and the arrangement that makes me feel physically uncomfortable.  It reminded me of the theme tune to some awful BBC programme like Man Alive or the Wednesday Play.  As an aside, I feel almost the same way about Nothing But Love by the Tartans + Kaddo Strings, though I don't get quite the same nausea.

spent many a happy hour in the wax machine,friday and saturday afternoons ........and in the talbot  talking music, well listening tbh , before trying to get into richards flat, the holy grail for al jolson fanatics......

  Hoagy Lands is a fantastic record.     the backing vocals are sublime,  HL's delivery is the top of the game,    wonderful

Being that bit older than many on here, most of my niter faves are referred to by many as 'youth club sounds' … AND of course … being that bit older, many of the Casino faves mean little or nothing to me.

There are thousands that l don't get when it comes to the word SOUL!  But some are just plain GOOD !    TSWONS !! 🎶🎶

Anything that is considered to be 70s 'crossover' or 'modern' on the Northern Soul scene. Face facts, 99.99% of them are just cheesy 70s disco records. Uhhhgggg

Musical taste is a very personal thing. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. Some records sounded great forty years ago but their appeal fades with time. The records I don’t get are tuneless pop tunes without any merit ie. they lack melody, harmony and rhythm.  By way of contrast, many of the 60’s soul 45’s that were commercial failures have considerable appeal, sometimes for reasons that are hard to fathom. Your question is a valid one but essentially it boils down to why are some records more likable than others? Neither is it negative to question a record’s popularity - we all do this on an individual basis when we listen to music, liking some tunes but passing over others. Remember, there’s no such thing as a bad soul record, just that some are better than others.

Soul is a feeling not a record 😍

Personally I don't mind any of those and love Cajun Hart. I'm convinced that people "hear" different things; Some seem to go for the voice - I tend to listen to the production, rhythm and melody and I like raw and unpolished sounding. So when I hear more disco or produced stuff with sophisticated arrangements it doesn't grab me, others are totally the opposite they'll like a nice vocal or admire the production. No one is "right".

As someone said earlier, it's horses for courses isn't, if we all enjoyed the same records it would become very boring and monotonous. 

If you have only been involved in northern soul for 35 years I suggest you shouldn't comment on a record that probably hasn't been played at a niter venue before you were born

People obviously like this, but I can't think why.  Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There". More suited to a middle aged Las Vegas cabaret audience.
