brilliant chalky, thanks for sharing these

I spent many hours on the drawing board doing the graphic design, Pete and I had loads of fun doing these mags. Stan from Preston had agreed to do the artwork but Pete couldn't wait for him - so I got the job. I got paid a Magnificents demo, a Bill Lucas and some of the paper labels from Godin's record labels: Soul City, Soul Deep, Right On and the unreleased 444. All issue number one. Have them framed ;-) Thanks Pete, it was a pleasure!

Excellent! Remember them at the time, think I've still got Issue 1 somewhere. In which I'm proud to feature in two of the charts - "Best Downers" and "People Who Know Nothing About Records"

Quality!

Bought both issues back in the day, quality from a much missed top lad.

Ta for these Chalky, they work nicely on the Kindle ap on my iPad.

Can you imagine Pete on here :-)

RIP Mr Lawson.

Great magazine ..yes ..can you imagine !!!

Thanks for that Chalky, wow Pete was certainly outspoken, seems he changed his mind about one or two people by issue 3 but really good to see someone telling it how it is. Great stuff.

Yeah interesting read, thanks Chalky.

A lot of the issues talked about are still there today nothing much changes really!

Don't think anything has changed Steve, I bet Pete was saying the same when he wrote the mags

The only reason I did these was because I was missing pages somehow in two of my issues. So thnaks to two mates I borrowed copies and I finished upm scanning not just the missing pages but the lot. Here is the result. Glad to see many enjoying them.

Cheers, cant wait to get stuck in tonight!

As for Pete and Soul Source........he'd have more bans and suspensions but he'd tell half these today how it really is and not what they want to hear.

Sorry for being an ignoramus, but when were these written?

Pete - daft as a brush but a heart of gold. Had lots to say, some of it pertinent and some of it complete bullshyte but he wouldn't say it behind your back, he'd say it right in your face.

He'd have LOVED Soul Source 'Lookbacks'.

Regards,

Dave

Great read.

Some of the early stuff is angst ridden vitriol - perfect for todays scene!

I'm sure it was 89/90.

That was first one Tony wasn't it. Sure somewhere in the 1st 1989 is mentioned.

Yes, very good read, a man with passion and opinions...and then some, but it's all about opinions, some things i agreed with some i didn't, but it's a piece written within a timeline ( i would have been around 25/26 and too young and crazed to have a valid opinion !!) But none the less a fascinating read.

They were pretty much done at the same time,89 going into 90, and both issues came out together too.

BRILLIANT thanks for posting them.

What a character,he would be fantastic on here and the scene must miss him.

Brian

I remember Pete was going to move into a flat in my Nans house, 'that handsome peter' she used to say and then one Sunday she clocked him outside the house acting 'strange' during his wearing your jeans inside out phase. haha kinda of soured the deal for her. rip Pete.

Pete will always be missed on the soul scene, he was a 'True' soul man, a font of knowledge, genuine passion and someone to remember with laughter and respect.

Thanks for posting those Chalks.

Work very well on the iPad.

What a great snapshot of the scene at that time too.

I think a lot of his opinions are still valid today for the scene moving forward.

Great reading that.

Aid.

For anyone interested in Pete's magazines, John Kingan sent me a tape recording Pete made of him interviewing Dave Godin.  The first hour and a bit is what appeared in the first issue.  The rest I guess was to be the "to be continued" in a further issue.

If you want to listen it is on my mixcloud page:

The Gospel According To Dave Godin

part homage to Dave Godin, part Pete's view of the scene

Towards the end of the 80's one of the Rare/Northern Soul Scene's most colourful characters, Pete Lawson, published two issues of his magazine "The Gospel According To Dave Godin". Part homage to Dave Godin, part Pete's vi...

Peter could not believe it when Dave Godin travelled up to his house and knocked on his door!

The recording is a valuable piece of history.

I bought the magazine when it first came out for sale.

Thanks for putting out this recording so we can hear it.

Thought I would give this a bump with the interest in magazines from the past.  All three issues of Pete's magazine, the third was unissued at the time of his death and has all the editing notes still in place.  Pete always spoke how he felt, he didn't mince his words and that bis evident on the magazines with some hilarious reading and some quite cutting comments as well about those who he held strong opinions about :)  follow the links to my site and all there available in epub or pdf and also Jock O'Connor's magazine as well.
