Hi everyone

What are your TOP 5 classic club sounds?

By 'club sound' I guess I mean the kind of thing that got played at youth clubs and old school minor soul venues (at a time when the rare stuff got played at the bigger established venues). I don't mean - yeah we play the CODs on Kellmac at our local club

These records may be the same as some of the first sounds your heard that turned you onto proper Northern and rare soul in the first place.

For me this was the type of sound I heard as a youth that made me realise there was something beyond Motown - and that something was so, sooooo much better

I guess, off the top of my head, my 5 classic club sounds would be:

Jamo Thomas - I Spy (For The FBI) (Thomas)

J.J. Barnes - Please Let Me In (Ric-Tic)

Willie Tee - Walking Up A One Way Street (Nola/Atlantic)

Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart (Revilot)

At youth clubs round here in the late seventies we relied on us bringing records in for the DJ to play! So some of the older kids got us hooked on tunes such as -

Seven Days is too long - Chuck Wood

Dance Dance Dance - The Casuleers

Some DJ's would then play The Snake, Footsie and Wigans Ovations in the belief that they were up with this crazy Northern Soul thing!! (although The Snake wasn't hated back then!)

Always loved these and rate them just as much today. Everyone a winner in my book and will always get me out of my seat

Martha & Vandellas - Nowhere to Run (still love this and will dance to it whenever and wherever)

Motown was actually the initial hook for me cos that's what got played most at the type of venues in question in my experience.

Remember this from when i'd be at school,going to a church hall disco,all the soul boys there.An impromptu dance competition developed to Archie Bell.Best dancer was a guy named Santos or Pele or suchlike,maybe from Hucknall.?
