Unusual to find  DVD extras in there too - I would have expected that to be saved for the DVD/Blu-Ray release of the film.

I actually went to Wigan in Doc Martens with my head shaved, so you can imagine the hassle. I've always been good at hiding in dark corners though.

I'm hoping for September as I'll be back in the UK for a week and I for one will be queuing up, don't care whether the head butt scene is there, it was a violent time and things did happen that wouldn't so much now. If we are to survive as a serious music scene we have to stop behaving like dinosaurs and encourage those that are eager to join the ranks of the beloved, soul is the music of the gods.

It could be very intimidating in most Northern towns walking around as a soulie in the early to mid 70s and you had to have your wits about you. Sometimes just getting a train back with records in your hand or bag could be enough to create a punch-up. Plus Wigan and Va-Va's had some very naughty characters hanging around that were constantly looking for easy targets. I was lucky, that apart from a well-publicised pint glass in my face @ the Mecca and a plot to nick my records @ Cleethorpes (which never took place) I managed to avoid most hassles. Even though I was tall and soft-looking I got through 'cos I knew my records, thank god!

Having read the book I thought it did over do the drugs bit a little but as it's a group of personal stories from people from each period pulled together to tell the story of the scene it just goes to show how important the drug side was to most of us at that time.So those who have airbrushed that side of the scene out of there memories are deluded to a certain extent.What the book reminded me was that I had forgotten those frightening bastards that were about (fortunately some of em were my mates or I knew some the other big lads) but in retrospect that was one the draws of the scene.........been a bit iffy,knowing dodgy guys,breaking all the rules.

I remember when the locals at Wigan used to come out the pubs after last orders & think it was fun to go "soulie" bashing,we used to pile off the Hull coach & throw ourselves into giving them a good kicking if we could.......it was the perfect night,a nighter,plenty of gear & a fight..........what more could you ask for,saved us scrapping with each other

I remember nights at Peterborough when it was scarce or just bad shite, 80% of the punters would be seriously glum as a result. Agree with everyone else's views on the scene being dragged down years ago, even The Goodies had a pop, ffs. I don't personally know Elaine but you can tell she's committed. Love her enthusiam and eloquence. Looking forward to seeing it!

A few nice unexpected surprises: John Harris, Rudy Love, Patrinell Staten, Royal Esquires etc.

Otherwise as expected for a soundtrack of a film set in the Wigan era.

Some one somewhere with a few John Harris's has said, 'stick that on there for me will ya' to drive up demand for a very rare record, that's my cynical view - great tune though

I cringe as much as anyone else over the perception of northern soul in the public eye, particularly over the last few weeks and months with the One Show, the world dancing championships and the flashmobs (whatever the fuck they are) but having just spent the weekend in the garden and reading the accompanying book (which I have had since it was first released and couldnt be bothered to read) this has surely got to be one of the best representations so far, I didnt go to Wigan or any of the other hallowed clubs and quite frankly and sick of hearing about a lot of it but with this book I would be happy to lend it to someone to read who doesnt have a huge understanding of the 'scene' and would hope that other than some of the drug horror stories in the middle of the book they would find it an interesting read and worth looking further into

 

I am looking forward to the film (and have been for what seems like a few years now) and hope it to be as enjoyable as the book

No, you're correct Andy. I stopped going to the Casino in '76, so I missed a lot of stuff that was played between then and when it closed. Did someone have an acetate of Marvin Gaye back then I wonder....?

What I cant & never can understand, is why people try to deny that the scene was fuelled by amphetamines, 99.9% of those that attended Allnighters were kept up all night dancing because of the use of speed.  Nobody is trying to glorify it, it just was & for very, very many people it was all part & parcel, for some it still is to this day, I find it totally ridiculous that you can just sweep it under the carpet, almost laughable really.....I also find the suggestion insulting, that just because you dropped a few caps  you had no appreciation of the music, without naming names, some of the most respected & knowlegeable people on the scene had a mis spent youth shall we say & some of the best record collections were allegedly financed through it....I have the greatest respect for everybodies opinion, but some of the holier tha thou drivel really gets my gander !!!.

 

I was serving in the Armed Forces, so even if I had wanted to partake, I couldnt have, but seriously, I cant think of one of my civillian friends who didnt, not one....If the film doesnt deal with the subject realistically, then it wont be the real deal, it happen(s)ed....get over it & stop trying to white wash us, I feel sorry for those that didnt go, but have a passing interest in what it was like, when folk pretend certain things didnt happen....

This film has been a very very delicate balance of being true to the essence of the scene without compromising any quality, whilst hoping to also appeal to a wider international audience. A tall order for a very British film. However, if ever a U.K. film captured the whole essence and experience of an incredible cultural scene, then I can think of no one better to have directed it then Elaine Constantine. She has my undying respect for managing to capture a piece of historical magic that happened in the North of England in the late 60s and early 70s which I think will be the template that future generations will look fondly upon and wished they'd been there. Like us. 

 

Can't wait to see it.

I know what you mean Jim. It's been painful. The kind of machinery you need to launch even a 'little' UK film like this against the Hollywood blockbusters is pretty formidable. We have a date of 15/09/14 for the soundtrack and 20/10/14 for the film. The plus side is that it may have been a long frustrating lead-up, but the sheer buzz from everyone involved in the film is that this is something very, very special. Looks like it's gonna be a key U.K. film for 2014. The overall vibe from everyone involved across all areas is just incredible - everybody is taking this film very seriously. Quite right too. It'll be worth the wait don't worry!
