i see its on at the Broadway cinema in Nottingham on the 17th October looking forward to seeing it been a long time coming

Is it on at the Broadway? Didn't see it on their site but hope it is as that's a cracking venue. It is on at Nottingham, Derby and other Showcase cinemas on the 18th.

 

Enjoyed the trailer, surprised this thread hasn't had more comments mind.

That's not a clip from the film. Think it's one of the many 'dance club' sessions put on for the cast(?) and aspiring extras/dancers.  It is clearly filmed at the 100 Club but (with the absence of the usual suspects) isn't one of the normal nighters so must have been taken over for this event.

Anybody else notice that the film is produced by Debbie Gray, seems rather apt 

I am a bit doubtful about the film after watching the trailer!

 

Never heard a DJ at the time say, "This is underground but it's going to be massive!! "

Most people could not have cared less, it was better underground!

 

Some of the other things said are terms used now, the describe the Northern Soul scene then.

People talked different at the time, because it was all happening and attitudes were different!

 

Hope that's just the trailer and the rest of the film has a bit more integrity.  The dance floor scenes are excellent and so is the music.

 I just remember that not everyone had a grimy look and was out of work, there were a lot of tidy decent people who loved the music and the scene.

Despite us ordering the DVD, I'd bet most of us want to see it at a cinema as well - we really need the list of where and when it's going to be screened ASAP!

The film has total integrity don't worry. I may have worded it differently when I was dee-jaying back then, but I can clearly recall saying similar stuff to the above, so it wasn't out of place to me at all. Ever hear Martyn Ellis at the Torch? He'd spiel stuff like that all the time.

 

And yes, I never went for the 'grimy' look ever, but the scenes outside the Casino definitely struck a chord with me. Incredibly accurate in my opinion. That's pretty much as I remembered it. I couldn't believe how accurate it was to be honest. I don't think there's much to argue about in terms of accuracy. I was looking for flaws and didn't really find any. It struck a chord with me for sure.

This is a small UK film up against big money Hollywood blockbusters, yet we just hit No.1 on the Amazon music DVD chart and will have a Top 20 album in 10 days time. If the local cinemas have any sense they'll be demanding to show it. So give 'em a prod. This is a film about Northern Soul for f*cks sake, so I'd expect local cinemas to be right on the case if they know their local audiences. I think at least 500,000 people in the UK would want to see this on the big screen, but hey, what do I know?

I've written to the producers regarding co-ordinating something down under but had no response whatsoever.

Perhaps they are taking a wait and see approach to the demand and reaction in the UK before deciding how best to market the film overseas.

I think the BluRay single disc release contains the extras you mentioned.  Not heard of a double disc release.  The CD soundtrack has a bonus DVD with Elaine being interviewed by one of the actors.

The giving them a prod route does work. A couple of Cambridge girls wrote to the arts cinema, a few of us followed up with comments and it's now being shown, so well worth writing.

Local agitation definitely works as there's a few other instances besides Cambridge. The editor of the Wigan Post threatened to do a campaign if the film wasn't booked for Wigan is just one example! So if the film's not showing in your local area, then definitely contact the cinema. It's not like we have Hollywood budgets or can spend hundreds of thousands of pounds marketing on TV ads etc, so the 'terrorist marketing' approach is pretty much the best approach. 

 

Give 'em a prod or, better still, a cattle prod!

Ive just spoken with the Boroadway Cinema in Letchworth and have emailed them the details of the film etc but who is distributing it? They are happy to screen it if interest is there etc and to keep costs as low as possible but I think it would help if Soulies in the local area emailed to confirm the interest. I think that's the case with most films and their soundtracks. Normally they'd expect to sell more DVDs so they tend to be cheaper because of the volume produced.

Nope, not just you. The DVD is exceptionally keenly priced. I was surprised too.....

Slightly easier to badger for us as Elaine was a local for a while and given Taffy was consultant on some of the casino scenes Ian. Plus I'm needing it big screen to see if I can see my wonderful dancing in the shadows of said scenes, given eyes not what they used to be   Trot on....

The trailer looks very appealing, will buy the DVD when it comes out all credit to Elaine for having the vision to do it.

Looks about as wank as I imagined...... I think I'll give it a wide berth.

Even big releases are cheap these days. Spiderman 3 was £10 in ASDA as soon as it came out. With SKY, Virgin and Netflix etc... DVD isn't the only way for films to make money these days. Lots more competition.

Bought the book from the book depositary on line - nearly a third knocked off the price and free postage (£13.60) . I see that it is slightly cheaper than that on other sites.

I know someone who ‘taught’ the actors to D.J at his home, and when he told me he had taught them to say…”Let’s ‘ave ya!”……I winced (Not sure that's in the film btw)........Ref the clip, when I see the actors ‘feeling the music’, I do cringe slightly because I know they are only acting.....But seeing this film from a negative view point is the easy option - of course we will be able to be pick many holes in it if we wanted to, as I'm sure The Romans would have if they saw Spartacus or The Ten Commandments!

Got it in one Len. We can all be critical if we want to. Just getting a film made and getting it distributed properly is a monumental task in itself. 'Northern Soul' has been in gestation for 17 years. For Elaine to even get a credible film about a cult music scene to the mainstream market is a massive feat in itself. I know about this stuff, I read all the right books and I've studied the film business very closely for the last 40 odd years. So when people knock the film before they've even seen it or make disparaging remarks I just take a deep breath and let it pass.

Having now worked with Elaine for the last 2 years, I realise how hard she's driven herself and how committed she's always been to this project. I seriously don't think anyone else would have been able to do what she's managed to pull off. So she has my everlasting respect. And this is after her ringing me @ 7.30pm tonight to give me a massive bollocking for something she thought I should have done. I really don't mind because very few people have that level of passion and commitment.

So unless Martin Scorcese or Francis Ford Coppola get a £200 million pound budget to do a Northern Soul film, it will not get any better than this believe me.

It's a remarkable achievement. If anyone belittles the film, then I'll wait with anticipation to see what the belittlers come up with.

Look... it just looks like a shit film, end of story...I know people will be interested because it's Northern Soul, but even that, what a TERRIBLE name for a film, how about Punk - The Movie or Psychedelia - The Motion Picture - how stupid do they sound as film titles?  Well 'Northern Soul The Movie sounds exactly the same.

 

I just watched the trailer and really have no idea what the film is about - ie what is the plot, what might happen to the characters, why is this interesting etc, it's not enough that there's northern soul music and folk dancing about everywhere, sorry.  The trailer has completely failed to fulfil it's purpose, no one outside of the Northern Soul scene will be remotely interested in this because the trailer makes the film look shit, it could just be an hour and a half of dancing with a car chase in the middle for all anyone can tell. 

 

To clarify, I've not seen it, I'm just saying that the trailer makes it look shit, the previous trailer was just as bad and Northen Soul the Movie is a stupid name for a film.  It might be great.
