There is no structure to record pricing any more.The other week,a copy of the Hollidays on Groove City reached the same price as Larry Wright £1500 on Johns auction site.So in other words the Hollidays has shot through the roof while Larry Wright has not gone up in years.

Noticed that, thought Larry Wright was cheap really given the silly money folks pay for some common records… 

but things like Contenders (Edge), still out there for what forty quid… 

 

Jesus wept that is a serious number for carol anderson,im not doubting the quality of the tune or the fact it doesnt turn up very often! I honestly thought this was a 500 to 700 quid tune!

It was but obviously skyrocketed the last 12-18 months for whatever reason..

I think you are spot on,it has become one of the most sought after records out there. 

when two or more get involved in a bidding war, the fear of missing out takes over and all sense and logic disappears.  The whole market from Northern Soul records is totally skewed, it basically f*cked.  Hopefully some of these false inflating prices will take a big hit one day cause many records that should be within reach of many are now completely out of reach.

There is no reason whatsoever or logic why a record that has been less than £1k for many years should all of a sudden triple in value in a short space of time.  As said it isn't even rare.

it is for 99% of collectors/buyers.  A tiny minority is totally skewing the market.  

I'm not worried? Bought for about £20 and sold for £40...never flipped it over.

Most of these new buyers aren’t “collectors” as we understand it. They are wannabe DJ’s who want the best dance tunes, that will pack a dance floor. Don’t forget that, what once packed a dance floor in our youth, can empty one now.

Larry Wright is much too fast for today. Even with the fabulous b side. The Holidays in contrast, was always a little slow to be a dance floor favourite, but is now perfect for OAP dance floors.

I took some flack a few weeks ago making exactly the same point about Carol Anderson - I've been surrounded by wannabee dj's / experts for over 50 yrs - most of whom have never discovered anything / taken a chance on anything whether it's a fiver or £500 + or have any comprehension of history or chronological order of things. Remember stuff like Earl Jackson / Sam Nesbitt were played at the Wheel - Professionals / George Blackwell / Steinways were played in '72 at the Fantasia - Quorn along with dozens of other killers. To quote the legendary dj - Bill Poole - 'This one's for Steve Frost, how much did it cost' - when only talking about £10 or less sounds - which all of the above were

I think you have hit the nail on the head,right now i am doing cartwheels as i own quite a few of these now ridiculosly over priced records The down side is that i can no longer afford to collect anymore

I'm in exactly the same position as you except my reaction is "FFS" whenever I see something in my collection going for what I consider to be a lot of money.

Just tells me similar 45s are now out of my price range.

I've given up buying apart from the odd previously unreleased item I like.

And whilst I assume bids on JM or any other auction are honoured I see a lot of IMO overpriced set sale 45s going round and round. 

 

I was personally outbid on a Capitols - Can't deny that I love you - Omen WLP on Tuesday - a sound I've never owned - last second snipe as always but at least I forced him to pay $2900 +. Wouldn't of been ecstatic to have won at the under bid but would of ticked another one off. I guess in the crazy world we operate currently sub $3000 was an OK price for an all-time sound.

nothing against you or your bid (your money, your choice)👍 But i can only dream of such things.

Nothing magical about my attitude to collecting / dj'ing - I've only ever owned a maximum of 250 records at any one time - and never all big ticket items. Always easier to lug 125 around than 1250 like some - you can only play @24 in an hrs spot

That's through over 55 yrs of collecting and 52 yrs of dj'ing, so only a certain amount of my assets are tied up in vinyl. Many people have massive collections which they will find have a lot of commercially worthless 45's, particularly when trying to sell in bulk. 

I have sold up on 3 occasions over the years and have never had an issue with realising a proper return.

Conservatively speaking a quarter of a million pound notes worth.

I'd certainly look at having a few groupies with you if your in the rare soul dj circuit!

You didn’t miss out. The record condition was poor. The buyer will need to upgrade the purchase if they wanted it that badly.

Just imagine what Ted's boxes are worth then.

That Capitols would have been my most expensive buy ever and as 1 of only a handful I've never owned was the only reason i was in for it.

My earlier point also stressed the fact that I've never carried only big ticket items, but that some people have a false impression of their collections realisable worth and will get a shock sometime down the road.

 

Often been quoted on here that an original top 500 collection is now a cool million pounds...if bought individually at a top rate etc.

Who wouldn't want to own it...

Just a scary thought for djs I guess who are genuinely walking about with a seriously valuable commodity!

I remember getting jumped outside the casino one night by fellow soulies, not punks, for the record box I had with me.

Luckily they failed....and a lot of records then got my Monica scratched into the run out grooves as a consequence!

Im surprised you didnt nail my mint copy off ebay a few years back…1500 quid! Seems cheap now😳

Ive just checked my listing,how time flys,it was actually 2013! So i suppose i got a good price then!

This has been my way of buying over the years. I could never understand wanting to own every record on a particular label. It’s totally about “what’s in the groove that counts” for me.

 I don’t understand how anyone can afford to buy thousands of records. If it doesn’t move me, why would I buy it. 
I think they call us hot boxers these days. But having 120 fantastic records, is better than having 2,000 but only ten are any good. Lol

If anyone wants a copy you can have mine for £2,750. I’ll even include Special Delivery post (Or if I fancy a day out, hand deliver it 😂)

depends how varied your taste is phil.. i have around 10,000 records and love everyone of them be it £3 or a bit more than that.. only having a couple of hundred i would get fed up pretty quickly despite the price tags.. just having a half decent play box is not enough for me

Todays £3 special...might be tomorrow's in demand big ticket tune!

Realistically though, unless you dj for a living..or are a trader, who'd own any record (for long) they don't like?

There's also the 'old' factor, where a fiver is still a lot of money, whereas for the youngsters its progressed to a fifty:)

Carol Anderson appeared on Ebay - Buy it now £3000 or best offer 

UK seller - expected though at that price and who can blame them.

I watch all the auctions and Ebay with baited breath either I don't know the true value of my records or I am sitting on a small fortune ! I have more than a few "big ticket" items but more than plenty lesser items that cost generally $20 or so and I enjoy them all equally. I have never bought a record I didn't like unless it was stupidly cheap and then stuck it up for sale ! Late last year I bought a long time want and was astounded nobody bid on it ! Ok it was not in the top 500 and probably not that well known but a fabulous record none the less it was around the $200 mark and to me that's enough for me to pay even though at my age I have more disposable income than I once did. I have watched stuff I own go through auctions that I have in equal ( sometimes much better) condition and all I think is that away from auctions and Ebay I probably wouldn't get anything like that money for it...

I feel so privileged to have been able to buy many of the big ticket items for under £30 back in the day, and was genuinely sad when the "crash" came in the early 80s when they dropped even further.

Some serious collections went for peanuts.

Who would have thought such a comeback would have gradually unfolded!

I guess its " better to have owned and sold, than never owned at all" so to speak.

The positive I take from all these incredible sales prices is that regardless of anything else, the absolute fanaticism of owning rare vinyl, lives on.

List on sales today - hundreds of 45's - offers - have a look - virtually worthless on average 

I don't see the point getting to this situation in the 1st place - did they find the sounds ??

I bid on Margaret Glover, got an email to confirm i was the highest bidder on the 14th, not heard anything. It says logon, I have but nothing there ?

Should have kept my Fortson & Scott. bought it many years ago for about £5 and sold it for little more than that, again many years ago. If only !

I bought them a month apart Dave . I had a offer made on my first copy so I went back for the second one
