September 28, 200816 yr sam williams. love slipped thru my fingers. bari track. donni burdick, al williams, i am nothing. all mega popular up station rd.
September 28, 200816 yr This topic needs to be more clearly defined because it's just turned into a list of records played at Wigan. For instance, Sam Williams, magnificent record as it is, used to empty the floor. Sue Lynne was a big spin for a few weeks but never what you'd call a 'number one' to the extent of Tainted Love. Malc Burton's list is by far and away the one that meets the criteria of the original post best.
September 28, 200816 yr wouldn't 'how long - j j barnes' need to be included. and perhaps 'country girl'
September 28, 200816 yr Paul Anka Micheal and Raymond Johnny Caswell They stick in my mind as big, big tunes.

September 28, 200816 yr What's KC & The Sunshine Band doing on a Wigan CD? The Queen of Clubs was a chart hit & pub disco favourite, or am I missing something? M p.d. Holly St. James? Dire record in my opinion, but certainly had them flocking...

Dire record in my opinion, but certainly had them flocking... It was definitely played, on import, can't have been for long though.

September 28, 200816 yr It was definitely played, on import, can't have been for long though. s'truth. never would have thought. 'love machine' by the miracles was another of those, wasn't it? I see it on compilations now but associate it more with your 'annabelle's nitespot' than the all-nighter scene.
September 28, 200816 yr It was definitely played, on import, can't have been for long though. You're right Pete, KC was played, but only for a few weeks. There were several in the same mould, from the same period - Delfonics "I Told You So" - Tavares "My Ship" etc. - but in no way could they be described as "Wigan Anthems". Definately think of Dana Valery, Velvets, Nancy Wilson, Gloria Jones, Mel Williams, Hesitations, Paul Anka, Epitome of Sound, Vibrations, Harold Melvin, Frankie Valli etc as the real 'anthemic' Wigan tunes! Oh... and Top Cat! Sean
September 28, 200816 yr Never went till april 78 so heres a later perspective all favs of mine in cover up mode george kirby, eddie jefferson, vicki baines, joe mathnews, bobby adams, infact most of richards set circa 78-79,roy dawson, love committee.funny but when i look back the record that really takes me back is Danny wagner lost a true love [bloody brill]. September 28, 200816 yr there were many wigan "anthems" or no1's. i would be very interested to know what the first of these were, and can you name them all? i will start with the obvious- judy street "what" probabaly vary around understanding of "anthems". Do you mean played to death? Many anthemic sounds are now the more embarrassing ones IMO - would 9 times out of 10 have been big if not played again and again at wigan? There will be many personal ones, for me Richard Searling's discoveries are my wigan anthems but that's probably because they were the reason I kept going to Saturday nights - only way to hear them. That brings up another "anthem" sub-section , Friday "Oldies" nighter anthems. My memory is really crap but this may shed a tiny interest. I think it would be about 74 or 75, I'm sure I was at school. I think it was in Black Echoes (can't be sure - when did BE start?), one of these top 10 lists, Top Ten at Wigan - I remember number one being the vocal to Bok to Bach (Dance of Love?). I've just pulled out of an old record box a copy of Northern Noise #3 - Special Wigan 4th Anniversary Oldies Edition (!) Which includes "Full results of our Top Poll"!!!! Top all-time single .........Do I Love you . 2) Out on the floor 3)Time will pass you by 4) What 5)Sweetest feeling. There's a more intertesting Richrad Searlin's Top 20 Oldies of all time (#1 Frank Beverley) and his top ten Newies (#1 Ivy Jo Hunter). If you want I can list later, got to go and get my daughter now. Nobody mentioned - I'm On mY Way Yet??? We've just done a top 20 Attic Cd for an internet radio show, don't think any of the above get a look in!
September 28, 200816 yr I remember one night it seamed like they just played Easy Baby & The Larue all night. Shawn Robinson was V big. paul

September 28, 200816 yr kev roberts writes of Posse-"evil" "the casino's long lost anthem (for a time anyway)" this is kinda what i meant. the "anthem" changed all the time. EVERY northern soul punter up and down the country knew what it was (at least in the late 70's) even if they never set foot inside the casino. i know the first record played was the sherry's but if i was to hazard a guess, could the first "anthem" have been either bobby paris or yvonne baker? in old magazines of the period, people would write in with their "top 10" and a "chart" would emerge. in which eddie parker-love you baby would always appear with judy street, eddie regan-playing hide and seek was never that far away either... though this is slightly off topic.and moonlight music and you...
September 28, 200816 yr The turnover of records between 1974-1975 was massive so the "anthems" had a short life, not to mention that once it got booted it was off the playlists. Keith-Daylight Saving Time occurs to me as being in this category only for the fact that the breaks were perfect for what sounded like a million people all clapping at the same time, in the right place. World Column-So Is The Sun had that amazing "papapapapapapapapapa" chorus hook. Present-Manys the slip etc with the opening bars had people flying to get on the dance floor. Pointer Sisters-Send him back
September 28, 200816 yr Present-Manys the slip etc with the opening bars had people flying to get on the dance floor. If I remember correctly. Ian Levine returned from the states in 74 with the vocal to Bok to Bach. This was it !!!. I first heard it at the Rose Room in Burnley at an alldayer. This was a great venue that Had Russ & Richard, coupled with levine & Curtis, with Ginger & Eddie stuck in the middle. Paul
