Hang on a minute......What about 'Can't Help Loving You'-Paul Anka......Brilliant in every way....

Not bad phil " when we get there" was ok 2 :lol:

The Brothers-not Northern And no way soul!

Judy Freeman & Black Rock for the full title.

If any seasoned Soul fans from Norwich are reading this then they may know a guy called Paul Moore (Moorso) and they may remember that we used to sing Paul Moore to the refrain of Hold On (go on, put it on and sing it and you'll see....).

Mick

Funny you should say that,Because i said the same back in 76-77,

It did not stop myself or other people dancing to it,Or the same people buying it BACK IN THE DAY,

It was played at ns venues so what more do you want,,

And it WAS released on R.C.A.

the old "elvis sound alike" roy hamilton does it for me with heartache hurry on by, closlely followed by sharon scott "id like to know" and the metros since i found my baby, both sharon scott and the metros were tracks i remember from years ago when you got records cheap and eventually sold them for whatever reason, the roy hamilton track i heard for the first time about 3 years ago, and wow, its just perfection,

Sam Cooke - Sugar Dumpling - everything about that song makes me want to dance and even have it as my ringtone.

other tracks close to my fav's

Beverly Ann - He's Coming Home

Laura Greene - Moonlight Music and Me

Paul Anka - When We Get There

like most of you I've known and loved all of the obvious northern things, but I only heard Sonny Til - "Tears and misery" for the first time about 3 years ago, and it still makes me shiver !

Shame I would of thought Phil you could have moved away from the orange play safe labels with white graphics, turn it up eighties my lad - The Jammers, Micheal Wycoff and Kenny Burke.

But thanks to Baz M for Everett Blood Hollins 1 x RCA offering How Have You Been RCA 10114 and the later RCA 11373 - Heaven Must Have Known.

The Metro's - "Time Changes Things" one of their cheapest and yet in mho one of their best brilliant for a "B" side!!

Have them both and love them both, but 'Shook Me Up' just edges 'Crackin Up' for RCA Victor niceness.

Greg..

Adey played this at the 100.First time i'd danced to it since i was 18.

2 Carolyn's to throw in the mix -

Cooke - I dont mind

Franklin - Reality (Torch tune? PD?).

And Bobbettes - Face the world.

So many great tunes from this label, it's a hard one to call. Two that I love at opposite ends of the spectrum which I don't think I've seen on this thread:

Bill Harris - Am I Cold, Am I Hot

Kenny Carter - I've Got To Find Her

WHAT IS YOUR ALL TIME FAVOURITE RECORD ON THE RCA LABEL ? AND ANY SPECIAL REASON THE MEMORIES Eg AN EX?? ETC ETC

Sharon Scott, 'Under lock and key' just because its brilliant

yes

Mine are the obvious ones,

Don Ray-Born A Loser

Lorraine Chandler-I Can't Go On

Metroos-Since I Found

But i do think tha Dean Courtneys-We have A Good Thing gets overlooked and is a cracking record.

Cottonmouth - Treat You Kindly (RCA 11012). Only ever seen black stock copies?

A tough call, as the label output contained so many great favourites, but would agree with an earlier post with reference to the Pied Piper productions.....due to Detroit bias on my own part I might add.......

WILLIE KENDRICKS-CHANGE YOUR WAYS / WHATS THAT ON YOUR FINGER, Great double siderthumbsup.gifhatsoff2.gif

Have to agree.

I wrote an article in Shades of Soul about collecting RCA many many moons ago.....still got em all about 160 I think !

Rob

always loved The Geminis "Can't let you go" or Susan Barrett "grain of sand"thumbsup.gif

Kenny Carter "Showdown"

Magnificent.

Sean

I knew someone was going to beat me with that.

There is very very few recordings with that much soul.

l remember the cover well......Cartoon characters.......She had was wearing clots and he had a vest on....They looked liked something out of Scooby-Do...........What a brilliant album though...:huh:

TRUST YOU!! CLOTS

I'm feeling brave so I'll admit that when I was at school I liked "Devils Drive" by Big Boris.

Not soul, not American, not very trendy, but who cares?

It had a great bass line.

Big Boris was a pseudonym for arranger Johnny Arthey.

Paul

So does that mean the rumour of Big Boris being a Jamaican musician resident in the UK is untrue then? Or was it just confusing Johnny Arthey with his work for labels like Trojan?

It has to be the Metros...............the production is so dark and menacing!!!

Would you want your 16 year old daughter going out with Percy when he's in this mood???(LOL)

I Guess Not! !

Has to be Judy Freeman and Blackrock Hold on,sounds just as great now as when i first heard it on the L.P.

happy go lucky me , by the bobbettes.

Having Fun another great tune of theirs ! !

  • 2 weeks later...

It has to be The Metros - Since I Found My Baby

No mention so far for:

Gia Mateo - If You Can't Say Anything Nice

Not a bad tume IMHO, and it got played to death at the Fleet, St Ives in the early 80s. (Hope I dont get a Q I -25!!)

Ric Franks

For me, two beauties:

Roy Hamilton - Heartache hurry on by ( 0 mph) - defy anyone to say this doesn't reduce you to tears (except Webbydublin maybe?)

Trade Martin - Moanin' (1000000000000000 mph)

For me there are loads - Great label but my fav is

Hokis Pokis - Swing

Sheer memories of the Mecca!

Didn't know it had ever been released on RCA - my copy is on Shield.

Kenny Carter "Showdown"

Found a nice black stocker of this one...and now the eternal question...what's it worth nowadays?!

Don Ray- Born a Loser

Cavaliers- Oh it hurts me

Sonny Til- Tears and Misery

chantels - i'm gonna win him back

main ingredient - instant love

escorts - you can't even be my friend

Didn't know it had ever been released on RCA - my copy is on Shield.

Glad Thats Sorted Out ! !

Percy Wiggins - it didnt take much (simple, cheesy, but quality)

Odyssey - Native new yorker (if you're a drummer you'd understand- if not , still a magnificent record and possibly my fave)

Willie Kendricks - change your ways ..... (for the sheer dynamics)

IAN

Of the 80s stuff, Glenn Jones 'Finesse' has got to be one of the best (IMO) of its time. Got some plays at Clifton Hall I believe - Sam??? Or it could have been Derby?? My memory is shite.

But of the RCA 60s stuff, I have to agree with cdfromderby - Sharon Scott's 'I'd like to know' has to be up there with them - I also like Lorraine Chandler's 'Tell me..' is a fave also.
