What Is Wrong With You Promoters ?

Recommended Posts

Promoters will never get together on a large scale.

For instance, close down 3/4 ,200 attendance venues within 25 miles.?

Maybe 4/8 promoters involved,possibly 20 dj's.?

But nevertheless,one big venue opens.1000 folk capacity.1/2 promoters,,6/8 dj's...200 folks dont/cant make it...oh f*ck me,where's the punters who wanted this i hear the cry.!!

There's no answer...apart from choose where you go for YOU and your friends, and choose wisely.

please send details Chalky.. . I have the odd spare week and always looking for sunshine with my soul, with maybe some bingo and dwarf tossing thrown in.. Could be a winner..

OK time to fess up. You are right. We hadn't planned to go public just yet, but as you've let the cat out of the bag......

Northern Soul is indeed "A way of life" and plans are well advanced for a soul care home for ageing soulfans, where likeminded soulfans can live their remaining years in secure accomodation, and in peace with all their life needs catered for.

The 'luxury' accomodation will comprise a series of specially designed chalets (based on a design pioneered by Sir Billy Butlin) so that our residents can re-live fond memories of old weekenders past. These chalets will be asbestos lined so that they are cold and damp, and so that you can hear what's going on in the chalet next door - 24/7! Alternatively for the financially challenged a limited amount of budget accomodation will be available in a series of neatly arranged caravans full of horse brass and chintz.

Mentioning 24/7 - we plan to have a special "bar" that will be open all day and night every day* serving watered down beer and spirits and the worst wine you'll ever have tasted (this we guarantee). There will be a daily diet of piped "northern soul" music into the communal accomodation areas and people can either sit and listen (not recommended - it's NS f.f.s), dance or be wheeled around to the music by our sympathetic carers - all hand picked because of their love of soul music - well we asked them on their job apps anyway!

There will also be defined 'break out' areas for all specialist needs (oldies, newies, funky, rare, modern, R&B) - details to be finalised - and so there will be absolutely no need to go off site ever again. There will also be a quiet garden** where chinstrokers can go to talk about vinyl, or moan about immigration and the price of petrol.

An exciting array of guest DJs will be brought in everyday to entertain the residents - we have already signed an exclusive deal with a well known former Wigan Casino DeeJay who is chomping at the bit to become a resident.

We're still working on prices for this exclusive lifestyle choice, and demand is sure to be very high. However we can reveal we are thinking of an exciting payment plan as an alternative to cash by way of handing over your old unwanted vinyl records(3) to us, but that is subject to further agreement.

* Excluding Xmas Day, boxing Day, New Years, Easter, Whitsun and any other time we feel like shutting up.

** The garden is subject to planning permission and may eventually end up being a shed.

(3) We absolutely reserve the right to reject pressings or old Soul Pack filler trash.

When the legs and bowels go i think its time for us to give it a rest. but each to their own...

Good luck with your dead men walking saga soul deals....

So just like in that other topic Steve, we are on differnt planets

No, cage fighting... It could be a strange fight.. One with head in the sand and one with his head in the clouds

i often wonder how much bitching went on before forums like this ..... there does seem to be an awful lot of bithcing about 'other dj's' and assumptions that people know how other people live there lives ..... good grief

I was reading some old fanzines the other day from the mid to late 90's and there is no mention of handbaggers or slagging northern and motown nights off. The old fanzines seem to be more focused about the music and having a fun and a unity for the music rather than picking up on where people go what tunes they listen to or if its a boot or not. I think a lot of people have forgot why we are into the scene no wonder the scene is so fragmented.

Dont get me wrong I'am sure there was slagging of then but to me since the internet and forums like these started etc its seems thats all the scene has become a giant slagging match.

maybe the fanzine did not want to lose customers and embraced all with open arms... A good selling point i guess....

Hi, You obviously missed the letters page in Blackbeat then

Then it was more 60s versus 70s but newies versus oldies also featured quite often.

No doubt I did but to me it just seems to be so rife at the moment.

I do wonder sometimes when some of you were young and in your lets say third year of soulin , did you ever grumble or complain about the "scene"

I am of the mind that if so many are surviving each and everyone of these events must be hitting the spot for someone , so that could be a good thing ?

Also seems to me that some of you do have your Eutopia in the events that you promote or dj at , yet you still get very worried about everyone else ?

why why why ? no one else seems to care so why do you ?

This place resembles the grumpy men in the balcony on the muppet show at times ...just my opinion

Hello all, I am not a promoter and don't get out very often so can't really be called a punter, but an article I read in a sunday newspaper may have a bearing in future on the number of soul events taking place. The article was about the cost of the Performing Rights License which I believe has to be purchased by anyone who plays music to the public, i.e. mobile discos, pubs/clubs etc.It stated that the cost was going to increase dramatically giving an example of a wedding DJ at present paying approximately £36 this would rise to £360. Now, if these figures are correct , judging the attendance at the last couple of soul nights I went to the door takings would not have covered this amount. Maybe some of the promoters on here can throw some more light on this subject?

There's 92 do's on, and you said you're skint but you probably wouldn't go out if you weren't cos the events are 'musically sub standard and boring', how can you possibly know that? I get it nothing appeals to you, but the need to make such a sweeping generalisation, that I don't get.

I know what venues are boring and sub standard to me cos ive attended them and know many of the djs that dj at them, how is that a sweepoing generalisation that is a fact of my experience in the soul scene, i have to travel a long distance sometimes to get my soul fix as they say its horses for courses, there are a few events local that i do enjoy but they aint on every week but there are a good few local events that bore the shit out of me that do seem to be on every week, my choice my opinion, thats why i said even if i wasnt skint i wouldnt be going out, hope you do get that Winnie and ive answered your quote good enough for you :hatsoff2:

Hi Carms, in my third year on the soul scene was still shaping my thoughts, taking it all in and learning. In my 38th year although still learning, I have a pretty god idea of what I like and don't like. I am not a promotor and I do go out sometimes (not just when DJing). I do think the scene has suffered as a result of far too many competing events and weekenders in particular. It's lost a lot of it's excitement, and fragmented.....and far from being a grumpy old man, I'd like it to be more exciting than it actually is today. For that to happen I'd like to see a lot fewer venues and a flight to quality. Smaller venues too which are a bit more atmospheric, and exciting records played. Fat chance of any of that happening then.....

It could be that they actually enjoy themselves, how many of the alleged sycophants venture onto threads like this, how often do those complaining about the top 500 go onto a lookback thread to give a view? If you haven't been to the event difficult to hold a position, so can't really comment directly on the thread, better it seems, to come onto/start a seperate thread and call them 'handbag' or 'sub standard and boring', not exactly building bridges or attempting to unite the scene. Yourself and Andy have both made positive comments recently regarding having oldies lovers at your events, that's the way forward surely?

What about the oldies only promotions getting a teeny bit more diverse also, why is it that the real NS Allnighters/Soul Nights, try to accomdate the oldies crowd a little, but its never reciprocated from what I can see......there's got to be some give & take.

It must have mellowed in the 90s then because if you didn't know the size of the run-out groove on every 45 you owned you could be tarred and feathered in the early 80s, and be branded a 'goose' for several months.

It's far less intense thesedays... and that's part of the problem funnily enough.

exactly my thoughts Russ, dj's I know that dj at what I call "mainstream" events, are TOLD by the promoters that one in four records MUST include a known and worn out oldie!, why ffs!, promters dont give punters enough credit for what they are prepared to listen to, pisses me off and i wouldnt personally dj for a promoter who told me i had to play certain records!, a dj friend of my a few months ago was dj'ing and playing a nice set that was being enjoyed by myself and a dozen other soulies who i know, and going by the dance floor and general good vibe of his set, when suddenly he took off his next choice of record and quickly stuck on a so called "floor packer" as not to alienate the promoter!!,...how about promoters growing some balls and telling dj's that their sets must NOT include no more than two "bankers", "fillers" and lets see where the real dj'ing talent lies!?

There probably are far too many events on, however you cant stop anyone putting an event on if they so choose. Wether their event serves the test of time and is worth putting on is in the hands of the promoters.

A venue should in my opinion state the music policy and stick with that, if people choose to go then that is their choice wether an event is on their doorstep, 30 minutes away or further.

If a promoter states the music policy for his / her venue that someone has been invited to dj at and it is not to that dj's taste anymore, then dont accept the invitation, simple. Likewise if your specific collection would not cater for the venues policy then decline also.

I have now been informed that for the venue I hire, I need liability insurance so as this may become the norm that'll lesser the amount of venues running also maybe.

so ""most of the events" is a sweeping generalisation is it Win, i would say that the comment you have highlighted is MY OPINION and how i wrote it is how i see it, Most of the events on this weekend for me are not worth going out for even if i wasnt skint, whats wrong with that will you please explain as i see my opinion on my experience my personal view, you dont agree with that so thats your choice but dont please tell me what i am thinking or that it comes accross in a way it aint, also why the fook do you always have to pick on peoples posts on what they see their own personal views, your first post on this thrread was nothing except picking my post apart, do you never have an opinion on a thread or do you just glorify in pulling peoples opinions apart cos after all you pulling my posts are apart have done this thread no favours what so ever, do me a favour and go pick on someone else cos its your kind of nitpicking that also pisses people off from posting on soul source, no ones perfect and maybe i aint the most intellectual person on here so you go carry on cos i could never compete your with intellectual superiority,

yours sincerely Bearsy (the non perfect poster who cant have his own opinion without someone ripping it apart cos i may not be word perfect) :hatsoff2:
