Rambler was part of Lou Beatty's La Beat set-up, and for me this is the most gut-wrenching soulful vocal performance ever committed to vinyl - deep, deep soul. The genius of this recording lies in the combination of the emotionally raw vocal, with the powerful simplicity of the lyrics. Blows me away every time! And if you like up-tempo stomping Detroit - just flip it over for 'Mojo Man'.

Ann Sexton - Come On Home - flip of I Still Love You is superb.

The other side of James Barnett is a decent Fame slowie.

Alice Clark - Say You'll Never Leave Me - superb.

Until the youtube era I'd never heard Ray Paige's "Don't Stop Now" on RCA, the other side of his version of Ain't No Soul. I'd never have thought of buying that, but the ballad side is immense.

He later re-cut it in a more latin style on Fania under his (presumably) real name, Rafi Pagan.

On a more recent in-demander I was very impressed by the ballad side of Double O's Demingoes "Color One Tear Black". I think the uptempo version of the same track wears pretty quickly but the slow version is a real mind-blower.

The a-side of the (IMHO terrible) northern side of the Districts on Nile is killer.

I noticed in the Wants Section very recently that someone was asking for a one sided demo of The Volcanos "Storm Warning" ....that would deprive the owner of hearing "Baby" on the flip of the issue which I love.

totally agree on the volumes and uptowners, heavy sweet soul titles. But I actually think the devotions northern side is much better than "can you explain it".
