If people turn up at our venue on the strength of what they've already seen and heard they may be slightly disappointed that we've not got what they expected. Please dont get me started on tall stories about records either. I was once diggin around the second hand record stalls n such in Portsmouth, when in one I met a very respected Motown collector, who had an arrangement with the local stores regarding any Motown, they would save things for him to collect next time he passed by. This particular day he asked me what I had been buying recently, I had just bought a copy of 'You Aint Sayin Nothin new' on US Motown, which at the time was a huge play all over the UK....I was gob smacked when this guy insisted in front of the store owner that he had a copy on a British Motown...I diplomatically tried to infer he might be mistaken, but was 'shouted' down by the 'expert'.....I can only assume that said collector felt the need to impress, then belittle me in front of his 'source' ?....needless to say my respect for this guy was shattered & I can never look at the guy in the same light.....a totally uneccessary lie...why ? People claiming to have been here , there and everywhere, being DJs for God knows how long, being mates with certain people because they think it gives them some credence in the eyes of others etc etc... I just think they must be very very sad people with no history to their boring lives that they have to make up stories to big themselves up. Just off topic a bit but someone I have known for many many years has acquired a completely different past to the one I know he had even gaining a degree along the way when I know he never went near a university or could have actually ever completed one!!! Russ Sadly Russ, not everyone sees through these people so it works to some degree, it must somehow make them feel better about themselves. To be fare though, this is another thing that is rife in all walks of life. I often hear people telling stories about some situation or other that I was at and I have to bite my lip for it being so far from the truth. I don't challenge, simply because the 'story' is entertaining, so why 'break' the nice atmosphere? I'm sure some of you 80's Football 'Hoodlums' have seen this happen many times. A famous person - David Nivon, was known as a b*llshitter (Story teller) but was so entertaining, everyone loved him for it. I think the subtle difference is, some exaggerate to make their story more entertaining, whereas others exaggerate to impress - that's where for me, it falls flat and I stop listening. Len.
