Excellent. Arguably, the greatest singer of all time!

Doing some research on the Astors for my next book at present - the communications director at the Stax-Soulville Foundation told me in passing that the Otis Redding thing is on tonight, he had a lot of input into the documentary.

Agree, The Big O documentary was excellent! and Oh my giddy aunt, Sam & Daves performance was jaw dropping .... Pure Sex!!! (I'm allowed to say that, it's after the watershed) I'm loving it all!!

The Otis documentary  on BBC4 was fantastic loads of footage never seen before and it gave a heads up to the Mod scene which embraced Soul and RnB when the powers that be would not play Black music on the radio.

Stunning stuff and as we all know it was gonna in tragedy

Very sad but the legacy he left us will live on for as long as there are Mods and Soul fanatics spreading the Faith

Much respect to the BBC crew that made the documentary ...... obviously done with a lot of care & love.

Reminds you just how great the big label stuff was (Stax, etc) ... it ain't all about obscure rarities.

Mind you, it was Otis (+ Sam & Dave) that 1st got me into soul, so I might be a bit biased.

I like that term .... ridiculously good !!! Sums it up in a nutshell ( gonna have to nick that term at some point in the future lol)

fantastic stuff esp sam and dave,the guitar player in the middle of the backing band was goin mental to the music(or was he a bass player?)

This was taken in 1967 - look at either sam or dave halway through the dancing - the guy does a back drop forget the wheel , torch and casino these guys were years ahead of there time  - top marks -

When you watch Sam and Dave, the show they put on and the fact they hated each other, what would it have been like if they had loved each other, still. incredible, I have some other footage somewhere, where they are doing "You don,t know like i know" where the whole place is rocking (not like Norway), it drains you just watching them, INCREDIBLE

Think her backing singers were called the Sweet Inspirations.......Cissy Houston was one of the members................. and she sometimes had her sisters as backing singers.

Very enjoyable night that was. Would have been superb to have witnessed these artists in their pomp.

The Gladys Knight & the Pips clip just showed what an incredible act they were. Totally effortless performance. Just a shame that the song was one of their worst.

The Sam and Dave Norway show I've seen on a DVD before and is nothing like the shows they did in the UK . At a very tender age, my older brother and his mates took me to see Sam and Dave at the Manchester Odeon. It was a package tour with other Stax and Atlantic artists, possibly Joe Tex and Eddie Floyd but Sam and Dave blew the roof off. As soon as they came on the audience went wild , unlike the Norwegians who seemed very restrained or put off by the military looking security.

 

Sam and Dave gave a brilliant performance with two or three encores , and really seemed to be enjoying themselves, no sign of any bad feelings between them. The band added to the show with great playing and moves, truly memorable and very impressionable to a young lad of thirteen.

 

The Otis concert footage was awesome and shows what a tragedy his early death was.

 

Next Friday (June 7th) 9 pm BBC 4 have a Bobby Womack documentary  followed by a 1971 Ike and Tina Turner and Wilson Pickett concert.

I was so fortunate to see Sam & Dave live in Nottingham must have been the same time I was just well amazed effected by the performance and the dance moves, always state that I was influenced by their footwork, and still like a wee dance to soothe me, as for the Norway footage I have seen this before and have it on dvd always great to see,

Anyone else notice that those buying Stax records before Otis crossed over to the pop buying public were refered to as "anoracs".

Thoroughly enjoyed both programmes. Such a pity that it took the BBC so long to make the Otis one and show the 'live' show. Very annoying that they've been sitting on this stuff for such a long time. Wonder what else is available.
