For me, record store day has lost its appeal.  I’m really only interested in new or previously unreleased stuff and don't see the point of putting out; compilation LP’s, previously released singles or LP’s in different coloured vinyl, just for the sake of record store day.

I agree John. I'd be more likely to buy something that's either unreleased or is only on CD or MP3 or something, something new and current, or like last year's brilliant Marvin/Mizell Bros 12" EP. It will be interesting to see what gets released in the States.

Some fantastic releases there, the best of which will sadly in a lot of cases be straight on Ebay for double the RRP, if previous years are anything to go by...

Record store day is no fun.....last year we waited for over 4 hours only to be told when we got to the counter......that's gone, that's gone, and yes that's bloody well gone already......but we have that one LP only........stuff that.....to much wasted time..

Then like the post above ,,Comes out on damn ebay ther same day.......piss take.....hope the whole thing falls flat on its face...

And they get stuck with the stuff........you only supposed to be  allowed one of each ?????.....Yet sellers have more stock ?..

The record shops who get the stock out partly to blame......I tend to buy LPs for most of the year.....cheaper on amazon...

And yes I would use my nearest shop but its a rip off......and Record store day does not help.............Shame.

Well that is a 45 worth having , already have  Loma vol 7 so i hope they are available separately (and i dont have the patience for queueing up)

To be registered as a seller on RSD, a shop has to sign a contract within which they agree not to sell any of their own RSD stock unsold on the day for the next 7 days online, which gives the eBay black market free reign. Makes little sense to me to create a special day to stimulate sales for sellers & buyers and then forbid a participating shop selling their own stock (bear in mind they have to pay for the majority of it before they receive it) when they could stick everything straight on Ebay at apreset maximum retail price and blow the Ebay chancers out of the water.  Just one of the faults with RSD in my mind....actually I'm goig now before i really get started  :D

What's the point of reissuing something like Python Lee Jackson 'In a broken dream'? I mean, i think it's a fantastic record of its kind but surely a piece of piss to pick up on a 7 for about 50p in a charity shop or somewhere..

What's the point of reissuing something like Python Lee Jackson 'In a broken dream'? I mean, i think it's a fantastic record of its kind but surely a piece of piss to pick up on a 7 for about 50p in a charity shop or somewhere..

Actually has 2 b sides the one to get has "doing fine" as b side. From memory it's a total rip off of Cloud 9 and the original writers aren't credited.

thats true... think given Soul Brother are releasing the 'Sandra Wright' Lp, I'll start there and work my way over to Oxford Street... I dont drink alcohol any more so a trendy coffee and a sticky bun is as strong as it gets I'm afraid...

Waste of time on one particular occasion. In the past I campaigned my 7" Detroit pressings over a full day here and in the US contacting potential stores/interested parties etc. Nil sales. One store was interested and promised to stock a couple and never did. They were new releases back then.  'Soul destroying'. Never again. Funky Feet and Crazy beat records shops stock my 2 45's without RSD!

Just seen the price of the Linda Jones - £27.50!!!!!  you can get a real one for that!!!    

 

I have spare mint vinyl copy with a little water damaged sleeve still in shrink - previously sealed until I opened it to play! wouldn't expect more than £20 for it!

 

£13.50 for Frank Wilson and £21 for the Sandra Wright LP  .........

Carlos Garnett - Anthology: Mystery Of Ages LP (anyone into funky/spiritual jazz not yet explored this guy's work this is a superb introduction to a real master - some devastatingly tough hard funky jazz here: you'll be pleasantly surprised!)

 

We also have the fab Cecilia Stalin in store from 3-4pm - she's got a release out on the day too.

Just got back from Static Records in Wigan and nice to see great support for a small independent , I got there at 7:30 am this morning and already about 20 people queuing, I went for the Sandra wright album, Linda jones and a small faces concept album, got all 3, phew, first time that's happened, I much prefer the smaller shops, went Piccadilly records last year, queued for 3 hours and got 3out of  8 I wanted, they was queuing up there from dinner time yesterday, anyway the Sandra wright album is just a masterpiece, listening to it right now and it's giving goosebumps, going back to wigan this afternoon to listen to some local bands support RSD then off to stateside soul club in Ashton tonight, the suns out, every bodies happy, God I just love days like this....happy soulin'.....phil

Just thinking back to last year and being more interested in previously unreleased tracks, or at least anything that hasn't previously made it to vinyl before, is anyone out there aware of anything like a challenger to the absolutely superb Marvin Gaye 12 from last years RSD? That was and remains such a treat.

Yes mate I think it is, it's got all the fold out bits ect with an extra fold out with sleeve notes, actually bought this for my son but it's a great album and new to my ears, I have seen a few originals but the sleeves were knackered, not surprised though cos they are very flimsy.. Phil

Record Store Day is a good thing, especially in the USA. Any initiative that keeps vinyl outlets open is a welcome in my books. Anyone who buys vinyl and keeps the record player industry alive is an asset to us all. It's fun being in a store on the day watching younger generations searching for vinyl, kinda reminds you of what searching for good music is all about. If you are planning a trip to the States, check out any store in the RSD scheme and you will find all the accessories you will ever need, crates of old vinyl under tables and forward thinking record dealers who genuinely love music. Sure it's all got a bit commercial but we've always trumped that digging in the hush-hush bargain basement end of the market.

 It's fun being in a store on the day watching younger generations searching for vinyl, kinda reminds you of what searching for good music is all about. 

Yes that what sways it for me - bought the Sandra Wright and they were playing the Linda Jones loud over a big high end sound system......................................on balance worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon...

The Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings download release from January will be nice on the limited 45 for RSD.."Little boys with shiny toys" :thumbsup:

Agree John. Fair play though to Truth and Soul records for putting out their 6 track forecast sample EP and dont know if anyone else picked this up but I'm personally enjoying the Lady Wray, Lee Fields and JR Thomas tracks this week. Great packaging and heavy 10" translucent green vinyl means it won't get lost too easily :D

Anyone missed out on the day our remaining titles are now online and available. Still a few Sandra Wright, Linda Jones, Carlos Garnett (can't recommend this highly enough for those into funky jazz) and the Betty Wright 7". Also a decent amount of northern soul 45s plus the Northern Soul soundtrack plus lots more going fast! Loads of these been selling on ebay already for (in some cases a lot) more. Grab them now. Very very busy in the shop and online so lots will be sold out today. Hope that's a good heads up  :thumbsup:

Steve - I picked it up - it is  good but they are selling it on their own site for £9 less than the RSD participants - what a con!!!.  I 've always given RSD the benefit of the doubt mainly because I like shopping for records but things like this don't do it any favours.

Soul Junction, Secret Stash (double Lps as well) and others releasing quality unissued material for around a tenner, why can't others do this?  They seem to be shooting themselves in the foot IMO.  I no longer bother with record store day because as Steve says commercialisation and greed seem to have overtaken what the day was supposed to be about.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Mal.  I bet most who participated went on line though.  But my point was it isn't hard to see why independent record stores are struggling and closing when you see the prices be asked.  Lp's twice the price they should be.   As Mike says cut the middle man out and go to the label directly if they have a store.  It would make far better business sense to cut the price and sell more wouldn't it?

 

I'd love to see the stores thriving, we don't have one in our town, but I'm not going to be taken for a mug paying over the odds for essentially reissue LP's, wouldn't mind if it was unreleased material.

That's obscene.  What was the original selling price?

I was in London for RSD in the afternoon in Berwick street on and off. I caught four of the acts that performed (no full sets) and generally I was less than impressed. Not really my cup of tea: there was a "ska/pop" group who were actually pretty good but not my thing, two "DJs" who got a rousing reception and stood most of the time moving their heads from side to side,  John CC  (all a bit tired now) and Gang of Four (over-rated -after a huge build up and intro it looked for a while as if they weren't coming out). Generally pretty mediocre and not something I'd go out of my way for again unless there was an act I really wanted to see (eg Edwin Collins who I missed the  previous year).

 

Personally I don't begrudge the prices charged although I didn't buy anything. I think they're pretty reasonable. When  I started buying LPs in the early 70s they cost £2.15 which in today's money. is about £20.00. Although  the price of vinyl went down in real terms during the 80s I still use my initial pocket money drainer as a benchmark. The whole "queuing" thing is the downside for me.

Berwick street is a Bun Fight, when I got to Soul Jazz records it was packed, I went up to the counter asked for the Sandra Wright LP, was told to fill in a form, which I did, then the lady says whats the number>? I had No Idea, so she says "you need to fill that out before I can serve you", so I said its ok, I'll go up to Soul Brother records in Putney to get it, its their release anyhow...

 

I agree about the queuing, there was a couple shops that literally had cues round the block, madness...
