Gilly youre right; he was a nice guy; friendly and always approachable. Also, unlike some Wigan dj’s he didnt set himself apart; he would always mingle in the Record bar etc. I especially remember him

  • As promised before I post it to mixcloud this week, here are the records Alan spun in his last spot 7-8th July 1979 together with Russ & Richards spots to give you a flavour of the night/era. Is

Would be nice to see Alan again after all these years. Me and Phsyco(Chris Jenkinson) used to go over to the Hansom Cab in York on Sundays where he used to DJ. Can't someone from York get him out for say a one off ,I'm sure he would enjoy himself.

Saw him a few year's ago in Halfords, the last time I saw him, he crossed the road at Foss Island. May have retired now.  Sure if he had any desires to be out on the scene again he would be. Thing's have changed so much since the old day's, some prefer it as it was...

Hi Ian, hope your keeping well. Chris has been to the last two all dayers at the Central and believe it or not

hasn't changed a bit, still the same. He'll be at the June

Do and I'll mention you were asking after him.Might be a good idea for the future

Where we and a few others could all meet up in Leeds for a drink and a meal then go onto the Central.

Another few faces are becoming regulars Cam and Christine Froggat, Charlie Fineberg, Helen Swish's ex Tom o'leary and his wife,Jimmy Adams from Darlington I'm sure you remember all of these. Oh and John Caerns from York gets across.

Look forward to your reply Regards Fred

Did  a tape swap with Alan Rhodes around 16 years ago there was as some fine stuff on that

One of the great wigan djs in my opinion. Always looked forward to his sets. Never disappointed. Good crowd used to come over from York as i remember.

Hi Jeb you are right Keiths weeding, hope you and Jan are keeping well

Used to know Alan quite well back at Wigan, a very nice guy and always approachable. Remember him for playing (yes I know a poppy type song) Eskew Affair. Salt and Pepper. Also Drake and the Ensolids and New York in the dark

Gilly youre right; he was a nice guy; friendly and always approachable. Also, unlike some Wigan dj’s he didnt set himself apart; he would always mingle in the Record bar etc. I especially remember him for playing the superb Lou Roberts ‘Everything you always wanted to know’. I admired the fact that he played good ‘under the radar’ records which werent necesarily expensive, such as Lenny Welch ‘you cant run away’, on Mercury, and Grant Smith and the Power ‘Thinkin bout you’ MGM.

Theres too few djs around now like him; not afraid to play cheap records; putting quality above value.

As quite rightly said....’an unsung hero of the Casino’

I might have mentioned this before, but I have his last Dj spot at Wigan on tape which I keep meaning to put on mixcloud, will see what I can do this week, definately underated imo.

He had good taste imo, and spun some left field stuff as well i.e as mention esko affair etc and pretty sure he spun that Legends record on pumkin.

p.s did Steve ever get round to uploading that last spot to mixcloud?

Yes the Legends was one of his and no I forgot all about it, joys of getting old, will try and sort this week

Hard Record, dont come up often.

Totally agree, love hearing the forgotten underplayed, leftfield obscure Wigan floorfillers..it wasnt all freddy chavis etc.. Legends is IMB and its a keeper 👍

I jocked a few times with Alan at The Oval Ball and had him as a guest at Jaspers 1979-81. His best York club without doubt was The Ebor Suite in York when I first started going in 1975.

I always rated Alan, he wasn't afraid to mix it with 'Mecca' stuff either, I still have a couple of records that I bought from him. Barbara Pennington 24hrs a day on a demo 12" he got from Levine. Sadly not the Kenny Smith issue (£15!)

I think that he had his hands tied to a degree at Wigan, but he's held in high regard still in York.

Funnily enough (?) I've just posted 4 hours worth of tapes from Casino 5th and the 2nd tape features a set by Alan (at least I think it's Alan ... someone standing in for Keith Minshull) - if it's not Alan can anyone tell who it is?)

Well clearly I didn't get this done, but with all the free time we have currently I have found the tapes, also has Richard Searlings spot before Alans and there are some interesting comments from Alan during the handover. I'll post the playlists up tomorrow and stick them on Mixcloud once I find my audio leads!

Cheers

I now found it quite iconic having listened to early live Wigan tapes when I was a kid in Scotland early 80 ‘s - listening to his spots - purchased from Richard Domar at the time - I loved his sets - I have lived just outside York for 20 yrs - but work in it daily - attended loads of soul nights / dayers etc ...

But alas never met the guy to tell him how much of an influence he had on me as a kid and then going to soul nights / nighters mid eighties and my ongoing attendance since then

The guy is truly one of  the underclassed heroes of the scene

Can anyone tell me how he got involved with Wigan at the beginning ?
Did he already have an established reputation as a DJ at the time ?
