WHEN WE GO OUT TO A NORTHER SOUL NIGHT,  ITS FOR THE TUNES OF OUR YOUTH

THE MEMORIES OF  THE CLUBS WE WENT TO , AND THAT IS THE TRUTH

BUT SOME DJ’S  DONT SEEM TO KNOW,  THAT IS WHAT NORTHERN SOUL IS ABOUT

ITS FOR  THE PUNTERS ENJOYMENT,  OF THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT

WE DONT WANT TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT A “B” SIDE, SOMEONE HAS FOUND

OR TOLD THIS IS GONNA BE, THE BIGGEST SOUND AROUND

DANCEFLOORS ARE OFTEN EMPTIED, WITH A TUNE  THE DJ NEEDS TO SHARE

THEY THEN TURN THEIR BACKS ON THE DANCEFLOOR,  WHERE DANCERS ONCE WHERE

DOESNT TAKE LONG TO GET THE FEEL,  OF WHAT IS POPULAR IN A PLACE

AND THE  DANCEFLOOR WILL FILL, LEAVING  HARDLY ANY SPACE

NEVER  IGNORE THE DANCERS WHO  LEAVE,  WHEN A TUNE YOU PLAY

IT  MEANS THEY DONT LIKE IT,  TAKE IT OFF THEY ARE TRYING TO SAY

HOW MANY “CAN’T DANCE DJ’S”,  THINK ITS  ALL  ABOUT “ME”

THE TRUTH IS THAT MORE WRONG, THEY JUST CANNOT BE

PLAY THE TUNES THAT GET THE PUNTERS,  OUT ON THE FLOOR

THEY PAY THE MONEY, THEY ARE MORE IMPORTANT I’M SURE

WITHOUT THESE DANCERS, NORTHERN SOUL WOULD NOT BE

AND DONT THINK THAT THIS POEM,  IS ONLY THE THOUGHTS OF ME

DJ’S PROVIDE A SERVICE,   ABOUT THEM IT IS NOT

BUT BECAUSE THEY PLAY THE TUNES,  A RESPONSIBILITY THEY HAVE GOT

AND FINALLY WE DONT NEED SLOWIES,  AT THE END OF THE NIGHT

WE ARE NOT OLD AND FRAIL, AND ALL LOSING OUR SIGHT

MOST LIKE A DANCE AFTER A FEW DRINKS, THAT IS TRUE TO SAY

SO THE LAST HOUR IS THE TIME,  WHEN THE BIG TUNES  YOU SHOULD PLAY

SO KEEP THE DANCERS DANCING,  ITS  WHAT YOUR PAID TO DO

TOO MUCH CHANGE AND THERE WILL BE NO ONE,   TO DANCE FOR YOU

WE DONT NEED EDUCATING,  OR TELLING WHATS GOOD

JUST PLAY THE RECORDS,   THE WAY THAT YOU SHOULD

Hearing oldies is good for you
On this big scene what shall we do?

Back then you looked for tunes to claim
Now you want the same again

While in the past those sure were fun
The search for new just ain't been done

Oldies are great, I must agree
But moving forward works for me

Fifty years, we still are strong,
But looking back is sometimes wrong

You feel the soul and so do I
And that is why it will not die.

Edited by Colnago

In the words of sir Bruce Forsythe ,   KEEP ON DANCING, if that's what you think soul music is about.🎭

New records should be tried, on a low ratio to known records.

If people will dance to them they become accepted Northern Soul, if not they should be dropped.

It always was, and still is, healthy that the dance floor decides what is good or not for Northern Soul!

Here's my poetic peeve - talcum powder......

Here I am on bloodied knees

I just can't stay upon my feet

Do I loathe it

All you have to do is wear

A pair of slippier shoes in there

Do I loathe it

From early doors til late at night

The dance floors covered in patches  of white

Do I loathe it

Wherever you lay it down I slip

I pray the Lord my balance to keep

And finish the dance on my two feet

Do I loathe it

Do I loathe it

Do I loathe it, indeed I do

Couldn't agree more. But....'twas always thus, 'twill always be. In many cases, the size of the record box behind the decks is only surpassed by the ego of the guy who owns it. I agree with other posters that new sounds have to be played, as otherwise the scene would have no future, and would have died decades ago. But, not to the point where the entire night sees an empty dance floor and your ears are bleeding from the incessant onslaught of garbage RnB B sides. I don't want to hear a record that's supposedly worth £5K played umpteen times a night if it's shit. As most of these "rarities" actually are. The DJ is most definitely NOT there to "educate" me. Never has been, and never will. I can do that myself, thank you very much. His job, his only job, is to assess the crowd, understand what they want, and provide it. If that crowd want more modern and/or "progressive" tunes, then fine. If they want to listen and dance to old Wheel and Torch sounds, then he should deliver them. I've touched on this very subject in the "most memorable DJ set" thread. It's as relevant now as it was back in the early 70's. If you want to hear more up-front and modern tunes, then attend events which are known to provide them. If you want to relive your mis-spent youth then attend events where you wont be disappointed. DJs should understand this, and provide EXACTLY what the punters pay for. It is, after all, what they're being paid for.

I've made a few changes (if it doesn't offend anyone) And given it a title.

GROUNDHOG DAY

WHEN WE GO OUT TO A NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT,  ITS NOT JUST FOR THE TUNES OF OUR YOUTH

THERE'S A LOT MORE THAN 500 RECORDS , AND THAT IS THE TRUTH

BUT SOME PUNTERS  DONT SEEM TO KNOW,  THAT IS WHAT NORTHERN SOUL IS ABOUT

ITS NOT JUST A PENSIONERS DISCO,  OF THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT

WE DO WANT TO BE RE- EDUCATED, ABOUT THE TUNES WE'D FORGOT

AND REMINDED HOW GOOD THEY WERE, AND WHY THEY WERE TOP

DANCEFLOORS ARE OFTEN EMPTIED, WITH A TUNE  THE DJ NEEDS TO SHARE

BUT EVERY RECORD WAS NEW AT SOME POINT, SO WHY NOT BE FAIR?.

DOESNT TAKE LONG TO GET THE FEEL,  OF WHAT IS POPULAR IN A PLACE

AND THE  DANCEFLOOR WILL FILL, LEAVING  HARDLY ANY SPACE

ALWAYS  IGNORE THE DANCERS WHO  LEAVE FOR THE NEW TUNE YOU PLAY

IT  MEANS THEY WONT OPEN THEIR EARS, AND HAVE HAD 'THEIR' DAY

HOW MANY “CAN’T DANCE DJ’S”,  THINK ITS  ALL  ABOUT “ME”

SOME PEOPLE JUST THINK THEY'RE JUKEBOXES, HOW WRONG CAN THEY BE

PLAY THE TUNES THAT GET THE PUNTERS,  ON THE FLOOR

SO IF YOU WANT A WEDDING DISCO DJ, THEN HEAD FOR THE DOOR

WITHOUT THESE DANCERS, NORTHERN SOUL WOULD NOT BE

AND DONT THINK THAT THIS POEM,  IS ONLY THE THOUGHTS OF ME

DJ’S PROVIDE A SERVICE,   ABOUT THEM IT IS NOT

BUT BECAUSE THEY PLAY THE TUNES,  RESPONSIBILITY TO THE SCENE  THEY ALSO HAVE GOT

AND FINALLY WE DO NEED SLOWIES,  AT THE END OF THE NIGHT

WE ARE OLD AND FRAIL, AND WILL DANCE TO ANY OLD SHITE

MOST THINK THEY CAN DANCE AFTER A FEW DRINKS, THAT IS TRUE TO SAY

SO I NEED TO GET TO THE BAR,  LAST ORDERS IS ON IT'S WAY!!

SO KEEP THE DANCERS DANCING,  ITS  WHAT YOUR PAID TO DO

BUT THROW SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN, WHILE THE PI55HEADS GO THE LOO

WE DO SOMETIMES NEED EDUCATING,  AND TELLING WHATS GOOD

JUST DONT PLAY THE SAME OLD RECORDS,  THAT'S WHAT YOU SHOULD..... DO

No, and have never been a DJ OR collector in the past either.  I just got fookin' fed up listening to same 20 records on the hour, every hour, every week, every month, every year. Some people REALLY do need to understand that Northern Soul does not Start and End with Ruby Andrews and Moses Smith.... HONEST!.

Edited by Zed1

if That’s what they play in your Northern Soul nights. I’m not surprised your ” fookin fed up “ there are 1000’s and 1000’s of tracks that don’t see any play lists. Djs need to satisfy punters, if it’s old stuff new stuff whatever.

If it’s all new it will soon close.

I may be wrong but I'm not sure that Sheddd has made his own poem up.  I think that little ditty might have been posted on here before; or something very similar has!!!

The sentiment it is meant to convey, well, that has been debated before on here many, many, many times.  :(

I was shocked to read your comment, you thought the poem I didn’t write

Of course I wrote it Drew, as sure as day follows night

You haven’t read it before, that just cannot be

so I really must confirm, it really was written by me

                                                                                                          "Handbags and Clown Rags"

Ever seen a DJ please the floor trying to play the other side?

Ever seen a young soul lookin' bored tryin' to make their loafers slide?

So what becomes of you owd love when life finally strips you of

the handbags and the clown rags who used to dance and sweat to buy you?

Once I was a young man all I thought I had to do was dance,

Well you are still a DJ and you've bought everything in style,

So why don't you figure it all out 'cos you don't mean a thing without

the handbags and the clown rags who used to dance and sweat to buy you.

Buy a song for six grand to your taste but save it for the people who want rare,

Four but twenty want it from a crate but you put them all in your pile.

They told me you missed Stoke today so what I suggest is you just play it at Rug-bay

and hide it from the handbags and the clown rags that used to dance and sweat to buy you.

No need to apologise for me Ste, although I do seem to have a habit of upsetting people of late!. :wicked:

The OP's Poem was having a go at DJ's who WONT just play the same old - same old. My 'poem' was having a go at the DJ's who do.

I’ve read the OP several times now ...and just don’t get it?

are you saying you can’t find the NS music you want to hear at a venue(within a reasonable distance to where you live)?

and... who is We? Is there a group who feel the same?

other than that, you are entitled to your own opinion.

I wonder if anyone in the small Lincolnshire village of Bicker ever considered starting a soul night?  I'm sure there's some that would gripe about the music policy.

Seriously comments like this make me glad I now only go out around 10 times a year  in the late 70, s and 80's we kept the scene alive with the hope new sounds would be accepted by the masses .but we were wrong  the narrow mindedness of attitudes like this have killed the best underground music scene

Rant over

Personally l'm glad the masses haven't accepted the new sounds you talk about , l could not stand the thought of another T shirt or Key ring  with shall we say  ,   SAG WAR FARE    for example.  emblazoned on it . 🎭

As poetry goes (and I'm no expert) this is all pretty crap.

why not do  one of those dead clever poems that don't rhyme?

ITS FOR THE TUNES OF OUR YOUTH

You mean when Searling or whoever would play something NEW to you, a time when there was no top 500, it was just great music, exciting, like remembering the first time you heard what was to become your all time favourite , where you can remember the time, the place, who you were with, that kind of thing? .

Each To their own and I have no axe to grind with your views so I'm not being argumentative but if you really want to live a semblance of your youth open your ears, sure there is plenty of what some would term crap played on the scene but there is also a plethora of magnificent music you are missing out on. If you don't want to listen to it played at an event at least look at the playlists on here and check some stuff out on YouTube.

We all love the music , no need for the divide......but then I've always been a dreamer

Here goes nothing.........

                Personal Heaven

Underground in the Catacombs they gather as one,

stood before the altar they applaud the high priest,

with open ears they listen to the scriptures,

it’s their religion, some would claim it to be a way of life,

a ritual clap at a given point signals togetherness,

they will be forever young, the faithful,

somewhere far distant

the high priests search out scriptures new,

unwittingly they and others like them

reap the bible, the Holy Grail, the Book of Kev,

time passes, adulthood takes it’s toll,

some fall by the wayside to procreate, find pastures new,

the faithful carry the torch in their hearts,

lighting the underground, gathering in smaller numbers

once more a mystery, an enigma to the masses.

Years roll by, children grow , the fallen return,

seeing a lifeline, a memory, a chance to recapture

a time passed, priests spring out of the woodwork,

altars become numerous, clothed in old vestments

weekends are spent in mass worship where scriptures from the book of Kev are

oft repeated.....

elsewhere in the dead of night the faithful respect

yet bury the past ,

in darkened rooms dancing to a different tune,

one religion, two faiths reading from different books,

one open

one closed,

time passes by  slowly,

unnoticed scriptures from the new religion

slip between the pages of the Book of Kev,

gain acceptance on the floor of God

where all who worship find their own place,

their own personal  Heaven.

can't believe that 27 years after my last niter and about 15 years since I last dj'd at a 60's night that the same old arguments rumbles on - and remembering back to the old blues and soul mags of the 70's even then there was the oldie v unknown or "newie" argument.  I came to the conclusion long ago some people just need to hear a record a to more times than others to learn to love or hate it.

In my later niter times keb and guy could have played jasper carrot funky moped and packed the floor and other dj's stuck to the tried and tested and could have got away with a box of 50 records their whole dj'ing career, but the arguments were there raging on just the same

Something beautiful happened here today.

The answer is obvious.

Silent disco.

Pre load the songs you want to hear over the soul night(er) in your personal head set, and let rip on the dance floor. Dance floor is split 50/50 talc / non talc.

If you are feeling adventurous you can always swap head sets! Or even have one foot in the talc and one foot out.

Simples.. No doubt this will now occur and it can be referred to as the please everybody formula..
