I have been trying to locate a song I used to hear around the Wigan area early 80s . It is definitely a Northern Soul classic/ derivative/ obscurity. It is an INSTRUMENTAL- very much a stomper/ handclap track and seems largely based on The Hesitations That’s What Love Is backing track or Eddie Parker I”m Gone.

Any clues?

Thanks

Wow! Yes- it is Interplay Derek and Ray! I’ve been thinking about this since about 1980! So grateful to you both. What encyclopaedic knowledge. Thanks

Yes it was a big sound and first played as a instrumental, which is the flip side of the vocal. I can't remember anyone playing the vocal till a few years later after it was booted.

A few suggestions....

The Righteous Brothers Band - Rat Race

Derek & Ray - Interplay

Hank Jacobs - Elijah Rockin With Soul

Grand Piano Company - Esperanto

The Dogs - Soul Step

Harry Betts - Theme from the fantastic flying machine

Harley Hatcher - Soul Hustler

There's loads of potentials......

(A number of the above have fallen out of favour with current tastes!!)

Talking about Casino Instrumentals, one visit during the mid seventies i bought an acetate Sweet Talking Guy and still have today.

Another one that started at St Ives covered up as Mike Post - Feelings.

.... St Ives one of the most underated nighters in N.S. history IMO

Blackpool Mecca then popular at the Casino and M's

Great record from those days! Proper allnighter record!

Did Levine cover this up as The Johnny Jackson Experience, or was that another instrumental.

Pal and the Prophets. Peace pipe. Jamie. Covered up as Luther Ingram Orch. ‘Space Odyssey’. Sounded great at the Casino, and the right tempo for those times lol.

Also, another 2 in the morning monster instrumental……proper!

One Wigan instrumental not many will have or get

Be young be foolish be happy played by Russ' winstanley

Utterly brilliant elusive for me after 39 years of chasing

It may have already been mentioned but this one I remember being a massive instrumental - Teddy Vann - Theme From Coloredman.

Rumour has it , It's the Funk Brothers , playing away from home , cheap as chips , I've got a promo copy cheap as Fish & chips , but a brilliant instrumental non the less , can't recall it being played before 76 , that's when I went further a field , like lots off others until 81

Yeah Tony it was. I still love it, but to many now its a joke, and an absolute no no to play. It worked superbly though in that huge ballroom.

Tim I'd stopped going to the Casino when this was being played so I can only imagine the effect on the dancefloor. Some of these instrumentals you had to be there to get it. I still have a soft spot for Fathers Angels "Bok to Bach".

Yeah c/u as "let's shingaling at the go go

An absolute Monster at the Torch and now largely forgotten. To me it just explodes excitement. Lots of "northern" very little "soul".
