For the last 2 nights I have been subjected to the worst kind of mindless reality TV you can imagaine. The way people who start threads can CLOSE them when they decide very self-righteously that debates they have started are not turning out to their taste or position. Your thread regs BILLY STEWART VS GEORGIE FAME was a good debate with some interesting contributions from both sides. A thorough reading of the full thread however, will reveal that the comments of the pro-original posters were in the main, more relaxed and certainly more civil than certain remarks made from the pop cover corner. Somebody merely mentioned DAVE GODIN lightheartedly - and everybody knows he was an ardent champion of BETTY BANKS 'Go Now' and the importance of getting original SOUL records a fair hearing. It was in fact you who dismissed GODIN as irrelevant and clearly when somebody opposed that position, you threw the toys out and closed the thread! I am afraid that your views on the superiority of those covers are not exactly controversial or 'against the grain', they are just a personal matter of musical taste and simply that. I would have very much have liked to clarify exactly what those records 'represent in a cultural sense' - a challenge posed by TONY ROUNCE, but you denied us that opportunity and to me, closed that thread uneccessarliy and in a premature manner. Forums are for debating and if people do not disagree there are no debates. In closing the thread, you did not allow the debate to run to it's own democratic and organic conclusion. I suggest you do indeed go back and study some of DAVE GODIN'S writings, because he for one, would certainly never have taken such an action. Free speech applies to everybody - NOT MERELY THE ORIGINAL proposers of a debate.... I hope you recieve this fraternally and that next time, you act within the spirit of free speech. But, no I was referring to JAZZBO'S joke about 'waking the ghost of DAVE GODIN in defence of BESSIE BANKS', which was where DAVE'S name entered the debate. Of course PETE S then took it onto another level by stating that he did not find 'anything' relevant or inspiring in DAVE'S writings which seemed a mighty strange statement to me, as somebody who was touched deeply as a teeenager by the passion encapsulated in those old B/S articles. I think you have done well to mention DAVE'S sexuality because that along with his love of Black Music clearly had a lot to do with his political philosophy, in which freedom of speech was obviously of paramount importance. Like TONY I actually enjoy and get 'entertained' by these debates - it does not annoy me that others have a different viewpoint and I re-iterate that I believe PETE closed the debate prematurely and just as some interesting and important aspects were being discussed. As in all forum debates, so much is taken out of context by everybody but the limitations of language dictate that as unavoidable. Thats why it's important that people remain good tempered and do not resort to anger at other people's views. TONY'S last post was his best in my view but I was denied the chance to respond and I think the debate would have gone on from there with a wider examination of the whole subject. Therefore, by closing it down, PETE S denied his own seed, the chance to bear fruit. Hopefully next time he will allow us all the privilege of discussing his ideas to the full. I have to put up with more crap than most people on this site because I refuse to be a sheep and agree with everything I'm "supposed" to agree with, and if I want to close a thread because I can see it turning into a personal attack on me, then thats my pergoative. I repeat, open a debate about dave Godin and I doubt you will hear any dissenting voices because they are all frightened to give their real opinion in case they get tied to the ducking stool and submerged in water until they admit they are a witch.
