Guest in town Mikey
Let`s hope,it`s better than the last effort.Which i thought was poor. It should be Neil. As has been said on here before. Elaine is a devoted Northern Soul fan. She is a director telling a story (not THE story) of the Northern Soul scene, from an inside perspective if you like. As opposed to someone telling a story second or third hand. Looking at the guys Elaine has helping her, most from the scene too. I have every confidence that if anyone can do a good job, then its Elaine. Oh and Matt. You arent paranoid. We are talking about you. Everyone does. Tomangoes
£600k is not going to go very far. Maybe a stage play could raise the funds and awareness. Once upon a time in Wigan is/was great when I saw it in Hull. It was only half full though, so I'm not sure how much the demand is for a film version. Half the records played in 1973 would not get a look in at a normal soul night, so apart from nostalgia, its unlikely to do what quadraphenia did for the mod revival, and therefore bomb at the box office. Probably dvd only apart from a very small number of independant cinemas, and that wont make any money. Its an honourable investment, but hardly likely to be a profitable one. Ed That's such a lazy and ill-informed posting that it demands some sort of reply. Why make the tie-in with the stage play Once Upon A Time In Wigan? These are two completely separate entities. Suggesting putting on a stage play to raise funds and awareness is laughable (as if stage plays themselves require no funding, no research, no casting, no directing, no publicity). This is not a film version of an existing play, it's from a completely original script. Comments about records played in '73 not getting a look in today are puzzling and to be honest completely irrelevant. The figure mentioned as a funding target is not the entire budget. A production company, sales agents and so on and all that entails are already on board. As for demand for the film being only within the scene that's a crazy standpoint. The film and the scene are also two completely separate entities. The film is not being made as an instructional manual for prospective converts or a nostalgia piece for those who have been on the scene their adult lives. It's a story about growing up in the North of England in the '70s and uses being on the scene as a very important part of the background story. The way the story is told will have a universality beyond the confines of the back-story, like any quality drama. Audiences for films can go beyond those who actually have first hand experience of the subject matter. How many who saw "Saving Private Ryan" got shot at on the Normandy Beaches, for example? Pointing out that this is hardly likely to be a 'profitable investment' when I suspect (forgive me if I am wrong) you are not an expert in feature film finance is unhelpful at best and mischievous at worst. 5 Link to comment Social source share

Len
I think some people are worried that it may be done so very wrong. I know Elaine and I'm pretty confident that it will be as accurate as can be; she's not stupid and does understand the Scene - That's obviously a good start! Apart from that I know she is getting advise off the right people that were there 'living it' so come on, give the girl a break and let's be positive and hope that a) It's done correctly (Which I think it will be) and b) That it is a success for her. As Butch said in the investor's brochure, this needs to be documented properly and I think he is helping with some advice about the film. I love to be negative sometimes and maybe it's me just being facetious (Never grown up me!) but in this case I'm gonna wait and see - That isn't just because I know Elaine (Did I mention that? - God I'm shallow! Lol) All the best, Len. P.s - I do understand that making a film about Northern Soul isn't 'Northern Soul' in itself (Underground) but hey, aren't we all too old to be cool now? - Even me! Lol - Good luck Elaine Edited May 19, 2012 by LEN Link to comment Social source share

It will maybe create a buzz in china , IMHO the only to make a bit of money...or not ! Do you want to articulate why you think this and what you know about the film to make you think like this, then you might find you someone from the film will actually answer your concerns, they are on FB if it is easier there. The making money comment is hilarious, if you think that is what this project is about you obviously know nothing about it., And since this seems to be your main gripe how about supplying your full name, to ensure it is not yet another person with a hidden agenda. 3 Link to comment Social source share

Spot. You have lost me here, its a drama with Northern Soul at the heart of it, if you can be bothered to read the publicity, not a documentary about Northern Soul, as I said before no-one expects Shane Meadows films to tell the whole history of Skinhead movement do they, it is a film set in a certain period of time, like many many British films and they seem determined to make it as authentic as possible for that time, so whats the problem? It is a drama and should be judged as such surely. I was surprised at girls too, but they are being taught by someone who was there, and to be fair there have been a couple of comments on other threads talking about girls doing so, I went to one of the dance classes just as in area (to watch before any smart ass comments on my less than fluid dance style) and from what I seen about 80% of them had it right and I believe they have improved dramatically since then. Its about a time dear to many of us, made by one of us, who is putting her heart and soul into everything to do with it, would it be too much to ask for a little positivity? I bet you Scorsese is pleased he only tackles the Catholic Church and Religion in his movies, rather than this sacred sanctity that is Northern Soul 1974..... 2 Link to comment Social source share
